Guest Posted June 14, 2013 Posted June 14, 2013 Dookie version. It sounds more fleshed-out. Also, please be sure to give a reason for your choice. List threads are frowned upon in this establishment.
rage_love97 Posted June 14, 2013 Posted June 14, 2013 I like kerplunk, i like the harmonies and the instruments better xD lol i dunno
Carrot Posted June 14, 2013 Posted June 14, 2013 i dunno, the rawness of Kerplunk is so cool. i'ma sucker for original versions too. but then again, i think his voice is too high on that version. so i'd say both. the guitar is so full on the Dookie version too

It's the tone of his voice you don't like on Kerplunk.
JIGD13 Posted June 14, 2013 Posted June 14, 2013 Dookie, it's better produced and it has a different vibe
burnout409 Posted June 14, 2013 Posted June 14, 2013 Personally i prefer the Dookie version it just packs a bit more of a punch which i think is great especially when the Guitar kicks in at the beginning! But to be honest i really only listen to live versions now because well it kicks fucking ass live!
Rileynyegaypride26 Posted June 14, 2013 Posted June 14, 2013 ive never even heard Kerplunk in fact ive only heard welcome to pardise like 3 times
frunsi Posted June 14, 2013 Posted June 14, 2013 i like the punchier guitars from the dookie version better than the kerplunk guitars, but in my opinion the bridge part with the bass solo sounds way more awesome on kerplunk. plus, the bored tone of billie's voice on kerplunk fits the song better than the dookie-style vocals.
DeJennsitized Posted June 14, 2013 Posted June 14, 2013 Gotta be Dookie for me too - the guitar sounds stronger and I love listening to the breakdown with my earphones That said though, I prefer how the bass sounds in Kerplunk, it's louder and I can pick it out better.
! Posted June 14, 2013 Posted June 14, 2013 Kerplunk easily. I like the raw sound, Billie's voice is a bit different in it, the solo is better, and I can't hear the bass in Dookie's version. Dookie's version is too polished for my liking.

I agree with both of you. I feel like the bass line in the middle is really what makes the song unique and awesome, and the Dookie version doesn't really give me that vibe. Same with the tone of voice, too. The version on Dookie definitely has better harmonies in the vocal parts than Kerplunk, but I think as a whole the Kerplunk version is better for the subject matter of the song itself.
PanicAttack! Posted June 15, 2013 Posted June 15, 2013 Before reading any comments, I'd predict that it's probably the odd one out that prefers the original recording. If you're more into the goofy atmosphere of Kerplunk! compared to Dookie's raw appeal, then I understand, but besides that the re-recording has all the trumps. It's easy to see why it was recorded again, it needed that sound. It went from mediocre Kerplunk! song - not even top 5 - to easily being one of the best off of Dookie. It didn't fit on Kerplunk!, at least when I look at the two in hindsight, which is all I'm able to do. Also, if you voted "Kerplunk!" try to consider if the reason it sounds better to you isn't just that it hasn't been overplayed yet, like the Dookie version likely has.

There's nothing raw about Dookie. It's polished, million dollar budget material. And it does fit on Kerplunk, as he wrote it at a time where it was close to when he was experiencing what he was going through compared to when Dookie came out, he was going through other things. As far as that last statement goes, some people prefer the less polished sound of the song, no one is really arguing which one "sounds" better.

No way in hell was Dookie a million dollar budget album ..
OneSongInFrench Posted June 15, 2013 Posted June 15, 2013 No way in hell was Dookie a million dollar budget album .. Yeah, Dookie was probably more like 50-100K maybe back then? I might be way over too on that estimate I think.
Nuclear Family Posted June 15, 2013 Posted June 15, 2013 I like the Dookie version better for everything except the bridge. The Kerplunk version feels more creepy to me on that part. Which is how I think it should sound.
belinda jane Posted June 15, 2013 Posted June 15, 2013 Dookie version, as that's the version I first heard and one of the first Green Day songs I actually heard as well
! Posted June 15, 2013 Posted June 15, 2013 No way in hell was Dookie a million dollar budget album .. I didn't intend on throwing out an accurate number. My point was that Welcome To Paradise on Cookie was more polished compared to Kerplunk's.
TheSonOfStJimmy Posted June 15, 2013 Posted June 15, 2013 Gonna be awkward here and say my favourite version was when they played it live in Tokyo for Awesome As Fuck!
inthehallwaynow Posted June 15, 2013 Posted June 15, 2013 The kerplunk version doesnt come off half as powerful as the dookie version.. it sounds weak to me..like a kid who just got a guitar for his birthday and plugged it into one of those little amps.. i mean im all for the sound of kerplunk but i think the sound of welcome to paradise on dookie is way more tough.. that guitar cut rights through you..and the vocals are perfect..i can hear the bass plenty and the recording gives the proper respect to tres drumming ability..
Chelsee Angevine Posted June 15, 2013 Posted June 15, 2013 Kerplunk! forever. I used to prefer Dookie because it felt like it was all cleaned up and nice-sounding. Now I've come to love and appreciate the raw, dirty sound on Kerplunk!. It makes the song more real. Since I recently moved out into the projects of one of the shittiest cities in my state, I really feel what they were feeling in this song. At first it was terrifying and awful and now it just feels like home. It hits me, man.
Clockwise Posted June 15, 2013 Posted June 15, 2013 I feel like Dookie contains the definitive version of the song.
DirtyRottenForgotten Posted June 15, 2013 Posted June 15, 2013 Its hard to decide. The bass is more standout on Kerplunk but I prefer the guitar and vocals on Dookie... So I guess I'd say Dookie.
