mallorymaloney Posted June 17, 2013 Posted June 17, 2013 They've certainly lost a fuckload of their popularity in my world ... A couple years ago, they were a huge central part of it, but after the trilogy came out in full and did nothing for me ((I only truly like about three or four of the songs)), I've just been less and less interested in them and their music, sadly. Part of this is due to my disappointment in Billie allowing his addictions to get so out of hand. ((Blah blah blah, he's only human, yadda yadda, I know, but knowing this doesn't change how I feel.)) I don't know if I'll ever quite 'get over' that. It felt like a very personal and horribly timed kick to the face to me, due to a bunch of reasons I'm not going to bother listing here. I hope they'll pick up their popularity in my world again when/if they release a new album, though. I'm really hoping! I miss loving them and their music as much as I used to.

They losted it, because they changed their style, but IDIOTS love that style, no matter is it pop punk, punk rock, electronic punk. Idiots JUST DON'T CARE. Idiots love their music no matter what style is their. Now they changed style, now there's no more fans. And, luckily, idiots like me discovered, that there is like a whole fucking bunch of fake idiots. And yea, it's not sadly if you aren't interested in their music. We don't need you as fan. You can just stay fake idiot.
Melissa-Whatsername Posted June 17, 2013 Posted June 17, 2013 That being said, there's another important factor: Green Day has both aged and evolved. I think that exactly this is the 'problem' some 'fans' have. some blame Green Day for making and trying different things. but these people would be the first who would blame Green Day for releasing the same record again and again (which fortunally never happened and I don't think they will do repetitive things )
IlariaIDIOT Posted June 17, 2013 Posted June 17, 2013 They played in front of 62.000 people two weeks ago breaking the attendance record of Emirates and headline festivals all over Europe. Is that what they call "loss of popularity"? This I'm only ""sad"" for 1 thing. Television&radio always put the same songs (Stray Heart. It's the only Green Day song I heard from tv. I did a stage in a travel agency in March and Stray Heart was always on) There are other cool song from the triology!!
InvaderPhantom Posted June 17, 2013 Posted June 17, 2013 Green Day definitely isn't the biggest band in the world anymore like the 99 Revolutions tour trailer said. But they don't need to be that. After 25 years as a band, selling millions of records and releasing two albums that helped define two seperate generations, they have found their place in rock history and they don't need a "hit song" anymore to stay relevant. I think at this point they will keep selling out stadiums till the end of their times. I mean think about it, when was the last time Metallica had a "hit song"? Or Bruce Springsteen? At some point in the career of an artist you don't need a hit anymore to sell out stadiums because you're just KNOWN. I guess Green Day aren't as popular anymore as they were a couple of years ago, yet they still headline giant festivals all over the world like Reading and play in giant stadiums like Emirates, and they have such an established and huge fanbase, they won't ever "fade away" one day. Of course it would be pretty awesome if they had a big "comeback" one day (in quotes because they were never really gone) like they had in 2004 and I'm secretly hoping that their next album will do that. But they don't have to.
Nemo. Posted June 17, 2013 Posted June 17, 2013 I think it's better when they loose their popularity. There will be less people at their shows but this is not bad in my opinion because then the setlist isn't this standard set anymore and they can play rareities more often... because all the people who only go to a GD show because they are famous (and they only know 10 songs) are all gone, which is a positive thing imo. And the most people here are complaining about the setlists and the lack of triology songs in there and the lack of popularity - but you can't have both..
heart on a noose Posted June 17, 2013 Posted June 17, 2013 I'm also not disappointed by the trilogy at all and I'm actually very glad that they did that. I don't think Green Day are losing their fans due to the fact of how many people has seen them on last few show, wow those are huge numbers which makes me being proud as a fan. I would say that they kinda lost popularity and lack of promotion definitely has to do something with it, but as long as the band themselves don't have a problem with it, I don't have either. Sure, I would like to see more interviews, more new videos on TV or song on the radio, but I'm rather happy when I met someone who maybe isn't familiar with Green Day's new stuff but knows songs from a Dookie or even Kerplunk.
JardyOfSuburbia Posted June 17, 2013 Posted June 17, 2013 Didn't even read the article after A) The source is Breathecast-Christian Music fans get it all here! and B) They misspelled "Billy" in the headline. Also, if Green Day went to smaller venues with less commercial success I would be OK with that. I just watched the "Life Without Warning" DVD where they had footage from the Warning and Nimrod tours. I would love to have seen Green Day on those tours. Smaller, intimate settings with deep tracks that are overlooked today.
Gwen Stacy Posted June 17, 2013 Posted June 17, 2013 They misspelled "Billy" in the headline. I cannot express to you all how much it rustles my jimmies when people do this.

WhiteTim Posted June 17, 2013 Posted June 17, 2013 It said Biggest ROCK Band, which they probably are. Currently? No of all time? Not even close
klytaemnestra Posted June 17, 2013 Posted June 17, 2013 they're headlining reading and leeds, one of the biggest festivals in the world. draw yr own conclusions imo. Currently? No of all time? Not even close who's the biggest rock band right now, then? cause i can't think of any. and i'm of the opinion that green day are the biggest band in recent history, say the last decade or two, because who else has had success like them? the only artists i can think of are of the solo persuasion. and even then, it's nowhere near as close. (i'm not talking album sales btw so pls don't throw numbers at me lol, i'm talking overall popularity)

Mumford and sons the lumineers the killers all had bigger 2012 years in terms of well everything

Mumford and sons the lumineers the killers all had bigger 2012 years in terms of well everything i would argue that tour attendance is more important than album sales, especially in a digital age where illegal downloading and album leaks are so prevalent. i was talking overarching the last couple of decades, i will certainly agree with you that green day had a shitty 2012, but that wasn't what i was getting at. i would also argue that mumford & sons and the lumineers aren't rock, but that's a moot point. i haven't heard anything by the killers on the radio in the last year, though, except mr brightside and human.

Considering Green Day hasnt even made the top 10 or even top 100 of highest grossing tours while in the last 10 years have seen U2 Rolling Stones Metallica Coldplay AC/DC... I dunno but I live in L.A. and in Houston I've heard Killers alot and Mumford and Lumineers are rock folk rock to be precise But really not a big deal Green Day are a great band regardless they have yet to disappoint (to me at least)

HolyHandGrenade Posted June 17, 2013 Posted June 17, 2013 Considering Green Day hasnt even made the top 10 or even top 100 of highest grossing tours while in the last 10 years have seen U2 Rolling Stones Metallica Coldplay AC/DC... As long as you can keep that status quo of a public presence (understandable references to songs, Billie Joe, etc...), and a holding on the charts (no need for #1) you're doing it right.
silvi@ Posted June 17, 2013 Posted June 17, 2013 The trilogy sold actually quite well. Yes, I agree with you but I've done a comparison with 21CB and AI ))
HolyHandGrenade Posted June 17, 2013 Posted June 17, 2013 Yes, I agree with you but I've done a comparison with 21CB and AI )) It's hard to look at :'( All bands ebb and flow album to album. Compare Warning to American Idiot, or 1039/SOSH to Dookie!
The Platypus! Posted June 17, 2013 Posted June 17, 2013 I don't think it's necessarily the trilogy's fault that Green Day 'seem' to have lost some of their popularity. I'm not blaming Billie but him going in to rehab made them cancel some of their tour. and I think that in the time he was in there was when they were going to do most of their promotion for the albums.
Bastard of 1969 Posted June 17, 2013 Posted June 17, 2013 Trilogy isn't reason of their loss of popularity. After American Idiot, they made 21cb. 21cb didn't have that much support as ai did. Awesome As Fuck, they are losing popularity since 2009. Not since the trilogy came. BUT IDIOTS STILL LOVE THEM!
alienlifeform Posted June 17, 2013 Posted June 17, 2013 I'm the only one who thinks that is really stupid call yourself and "idiot", to say you're a green day fan it's an stupid label.. no matter if the official fan club is called this way..
