This topic got more tangential than abused geometry and bezier curves.

In a way, I'm glad that the band is going through a period of media silence (relative to the past 10 years). With constant, unceasing attention most people begin to hate bands, politicians, or anything else really. This gives Green Day a much better opportunity to reclaim an audience and make a comeback without much opposition. Granted, they have to make that album first

I think they've lost some of their popularity but they're still one of the biggest rock bands in the world. The only bands that I can think of that are probably bigger than them are Foo Fighters, Muse , Coldplay and Linkin Park

I don't know if people forget that they just played a show of over 60 thousand people or not. Not many bands that aren't the biggest rock band in the world can say that they've played to over 60 thousand people once, (in a headlining show) but Green Day have done it 4 times. Maybe more. Just 4 times that I can recall. I mean, that's since American Idiot, but when they just played that big a show sitting here wondering if they've lost popularity is pretty redundant because they are still one of the biggest, if not the biggest rock band in the world.

And like I said before, they're bigger than the media now. They're a band that I think regardless of how bad they get they could still sell out stadiums just because of their name. They aren't quite AC/DC or Led Zeppelin but still, a band that's bigger than mainstream. Sure, Nicki Minaj has more fans right now than Green Day does, but she doesn't have fans that have been fans of her for 20 years and always will be, because when she's gone in 5 years, so will her fans. A band like Linkin Park or Colplay are bigger than Green Day in the media because they have a bigger mainstream fanbase, but mainstream fanbases flux when an artist goes downhill. So if they were to at any point start sucking to their fans, I think their shows would get smaller. The Foo Fighters, on the other hand, because of Dave Grohl, will always have a huge fanbase. I could say at this point the same goes for Green Day. When you've had as many hits as Green Day have it would be nearly impossible for their fanbase to forget about them. Sure, if Green Day continues to put out albums with the quality of the Trilogy, they will surely lose their fans. But will they disappear? Probably not. Because they've released so many great albums people will always be excited to go to their shows to hear hits like Good Riddance and Boulevard. Just like how people go to ACDC concerts to hear songs like Highway to Hell and Back in Black. Not because they're just as good as they were in the 80's, now, but because it's ACDC, and they're just plain out cool. Always have been, always will be.

Yes Green Day is one of the biggest bands in history (something that wasn't really even being disputed)

Let's just end it now instead of sounding like this

There was a time when Green Day was popular than any of the bands you mentioned. But now, they are hardly in the news.Mainstream success is not forever.Foo Fighters are a popular band but they have never been near Green Day in their popularity, even though Dave Grohl is more famous than Billie.Linkin Park and Coldplay will surely loose their mainstream success by the release of their next albums.Linkin Park's last album wasn't that great and they have crossed their peak a long time back.Only road ahead is a descend. On the other hand, Coldplay's last two albums have been terrible and I'm sure excessive promotion and production won't work the next time.Everyone has a time.Today is the time for The Black Keys,Imagine Dragons,Fun,Mumford and Sons and The Lumineers.THERE WAS A TIME when Green Day was big.But they are no longer THAT big, even though they are very popular. They have reached a stage where they can only gain popularity and not loose it.I remember there were so many people who hated Green Day back in the day just because they were better and more popular than their favourite band.Anyways, with Green Day, you never know. All they need is one commercially successfull single to bring their mainstream success back on track.

Gonna be honest, I dont want them to be mainstream. For the same reason I didn't want Skrillex to go mainstream. Because they're different. As soon as they're trendy, I'm not going to let myself listen to whatever is trending. I just can't enjoy something that all the preppy douches around the school listen to. I've been a Green Day fan since I heard Burnout but man I just hate listening to their trendy stuff. So hopefully they just stay where they are but somehow put out something that matches 21st Century Breakdown, or exceeds it and is as good as Dookie or AI. Like that would ever happen though, lol.

I found 21st cb to be their most mainstream album ever :P

lol you guys I'm really entertained right now. Especially at the guy who said that michael jackson wouldn't be called a legend if he didn't die

but people aren't checking for rock music cause it's lame as fuck nowadays. Atleast you can dance on mediocre popsongs.

It's soo boring which makes me sad but thank god other genres are really exciting these days especially rap/hiphop

I didn't say that. But I guess you're entitled to think what you want. He was charged as a rapist and was bashed on as such until he died. While maybe he would be called a legend he would also be known as that. CNN would be talking about his molestation charges all up until he died, then, "POP LEGEND DEAD IN HIS HOUSE! TRAGEDY". Information age of hysteria INDEED. But when someone brings up that issue people get entirely too butthurt because he's dead. But thank you for ignoring the obvious.

Sure, rock is boring, but hip-hop is no longer an art form, its a career, not something you like to do but something you do to make millions of dollars. It's filled with people that are only famous because they are good-looking.

Yeah, it was, but it was still great.

Like people care about that in the long run. People still called him the king of pop during that time. Roman polanski and Sean penn both abusers but do you ever hear about? No. Instead they get praised for their work.

Yeah sure there are always people who make music just for money. Not just hip-hop it's every genre. But have you listened to Kendrick Lamar's album. It's really great.

The last exciting rock album to be released was probably 21st century breakdown. 4 years ago. That's boring to me.

They've been gradually declining from the mainstream ever since the years following American Idiot. 21st Century Breakdown caught a break in that it basically rode on the coat tails of American Idiot (not to discredit it at all, it has some great songs on there). I think alot of people "grew out" of them between AI and the trilogy.

2005 and 2012 are two different times with two different heights of popularity in music. 2005 was all about the "guy liner" bands and Green Day led the charge. 2012, god I don't even know what music was like last year or this year or what, but Green Day certainly don't fit into it. I don't blame the trilogy for their "lack" of popularity because I honestly believe that even if it was promoted properly or whatever it still would've gone relatively unheard by the masses.

But, like others have said, they will never fade into obscurity or anything like that because of how dedicated a fanbase they have and how much respect they've garnered from people and musicians alike.

Unfortunately, it does seem like a low point for them right now. But they always bounce back. And after a hugely successful album, everything always gets the "didn't do as well as..." crap. The albums following Dookie and American Idiot obviously didn't do as well as they did but were by no means failures. It's just part of the natural ebb and flow of a musicians career. I do look forward to their next album being fully promoted with music videos, tours, talk and tv shows, interviews, radio play. Before the rehab thing they were doing an insane amount of promotion for Uno! and I honestly believe the trilogy could have been the biggest success of their career had things turned out differently. 12 singles each with a proper video, appearances on every TV and radio show ever, non-stop touring, soundtrack appearances, movie cameos, promotional singles, secret shows, not-so-secret shows, club shows, the WORKS. The next album should get promoted that way. The guys in Green Day are known for throwing us for a loop, release every single song on the album as a single. Make 16 music videos. Blow us away.

There are a variety of things I could say in response to this thread, but one sticks out: Are we automatically calling the trilogy a "disappointment"? In whose opinion?...

Let's be real, Green Day pulling off that comeback with American Idiot was huge, well deserved, and a true spectacle in music.

There's literally no chance of them pulling another one, I'm just being honest. The mainstream has changed, and Green Day doesn't really have that "cool" factor that they did when American Idiot took over the world.

They will always be very successful with tours, but for radio/record sales/singles, they're done.

In terms of sales it is a dissapointment there is NO denying that...

To be fair it's not the actual music fault... just due to bad situations that derailed the albums chances

If they were so disappointed with the sales, they could just give it all to me instead :ermm:

And by literally, you mean figuratively?

and Billie himself said it was not as succesful as expected in the RS interview. maybe not a disappointement in his opinion thought.

he said that all the fans thought it was over when Insomniac was released just after Dookie. he said the same kind of thing was happening right now but that he was still thinking for doing new albums again and again.

in my opinion i don't care about the trilogy popularity. i like most of the songs and it's different from the others albums so i'm happy with it. and no wonder the next album will be a success.
