localinsomniac Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 No Sequels spoil everything Which is why 21st Century Breakdown was so disappointing to me.
WhiteTim Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 Which is why 21st Century Breakdown was so disappointing to me. But it's not a sequel...
Sarcasm Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 Jesus Christ you guys are bored.Says the guy with 8500 posts in like 7 - 8 months. Also AI and 21stCBD was never related, they just vaguely touch the same topic on a few songs.
Asa. Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 Doing a sequel to an album just screams "sellout" to me. It's not an awful idea, seeing as its fucking Green Day, but it'd have to stand up to the original.
Flyingdonutz Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 They could make another rock opera. Because lets face it. The world has gotten 10 times worse every year since 2004. We need another American Idiot.

He's just efficient They aren't related plot wise, but the themes, music style (relative to 90's GD), character story lines, and dramatics all follow the same basic blueprint. They are by no means the same, but they are sibling of the same parents.

green day is Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 give me novacaine is about weed Oh, you innocent soul.
WhiteTim Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 A sequel is something with the same charectors same plot line which 21st doesnt share so while it's a rock opera it is not AI 2
green day is Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 Give Me Novacaine is about novocaine. How is this even debatable? Because metaphor. Novocaine isn't exactly a common drug of abuse.
HolyHandGrenade Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 Because metaphor. Novocaine isn't exactly a common drug of abuse. It was a joke
Sarcasm Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 Because metaphor. Novocaine isn't exactly a common drug of abuse. It's a morphine. I always thought it was heroin.
J&TheNight Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 Spider-Man 2 sucked? You mean the film that was largely considered to be the best super hero film ever until The Dark Knight came out? Spider Man 2 DID suck. I can't tell if it's worse than Spider-Man 3 or not. And The Dark Knight isn't as good as Batman Begins XD All opinions.
green day is Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 It's a morphine. I always thought it was heroin. No it's not, morphine is an opiate and so is heroin. You can't just call anything that relieves pain morphine. Novacaine is an amino ester like cocaine, both of which are local anesthetics. Opiates = numbness, Caines = numbness in one spot.

Heroin is a morphine, and GMN i not about smoking weed. Period.EDIT, heroin is a morphine, an opiate is a drug that has morphine like effect. I don't see why we talk about this.
J&TheNight Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 Novocaine is form of anaesthetic commonly used by dentists. Check the lyrics: "Take away the sensation inside… It's like a throbbing toothache of the mind…" (In the first verse. Pretty obvious reference there.) Actually I'm not even going to quote the rest of the lyrics because that would mean quoting the entire song, as they all evidence this point. I know that American Idiot is basically one giant metaphor but the metaphor here isn't the drug they're using, but how it symbolises complete surrender. Why would it mean any other drug? They've listed at least 5 in the songs before this one, so why would they shy away from mentioning it here? It's pretty obvious that he's talking about literal Novocaine which is as you said, a very common anesthetic for the dentist. I never once thought it wasn't Novocaine because it was so obvious.

EDIT, heroin is a morphine, an opiate is a drug that has morphine like effect. I don't see why we talk about this. No no no, check it out, nothing is "a morphine", morphine is "an opiate". Heroin is also an opiate. Opiates are a class of drug, including opium and everything derived from opium, like morphine, heroin, and oxycodone. Novocaine is form of anaesthetic commonly used by dentists. Check the lyrics: "Take away the sensation inside… It's like a throbbing toothache of the mind…" (In the first verse. Pretty obvious reference there.) Actually I'm not even going to quote the rest of the lyrics because that would mean quoting the entire song, as they all evidence this point. They've listed at least 5 in the songs before this one, so why would they shy away from mentioning it here? I never said he was shying away from mentioning the drug, you can have a metaphor without necessarily being scared to talk about the real thing. The toothache thing is just part of the metaphor. I always just thought of this song as a metaphor for heroin or some other hard drug, especially cause of the needle x picture in the booklet.
green day is Posted May 26, 2013 Posted May 26, 2013 Exactly! It means that the narrator is longing for an escape. It's not "give me novocaine I am addicted" it's "give me the sensation of nothingness because I can't deal with all of this pain". But if you craved heroin, why out of all of the metaphors you could use, would you pick a different drug? It's like saying hey I really want a boyfriend right now so I'll sing about a girlfriend. It's all wrong. (An injection is how novocaine is given to patients at the dentist.) Yeah, it's about ways to relieve pain. Drugs. And nobody abuses Novocaine, so my next logical step is heroin. Could be coke or something though, definitely not weed.
green day is Posted May 26, 2013 Posted May 26, 2013 But… It's not about actual novocaine abuse, just the sensation of relief it provides. It's really specific about the effects, too (sleeping, loss of feeling, dreaming, being mindless, etc.) You're not going to feel the way the song describes on a stimulant like coke. Basically, it'd be a bit of a shit song if all they wanted to achieve from the metaphor was to replace the name of the actual drug the narrator is addicted to. You're right, it is a metaphor, but not for that. No one said anything about addiction. I agree with you that the song isn't necessarily all about the drug, it's about relief, but it's also definitely not about getting that relief from Novocaine.
justcause Posted May 26, 2013 Posted May 26, 2013 I think the key is that he pointedly brings Jimmy into it, with all that Jimmy symbolizes. He goes to Jimmy when the pain gets too much, just like someone would go to the dentist with toothache, and I think the whole low and sorrowful feel of this song shows he's become aware of how normalized this has become in his life.
carriedaway Posted May 26, 2013 Posted May 26, 2013 I think it'd be interesting if they continued on with whatshername. Where she went and such. Then again, her character seems to pop up in all their albums. But I think AI is over and done with, I don't think the guys would pick it up again. They seem to like to keep looking forward.
GreenDayxWeezer Posted May 26, 2013 Posted May 26, 2013 That would be cool but I would have to say no. If they did, what would they add to it?
Dori_Epiphone Posted May 26, 2013 Author Posted May 26, 2013 They could make another rock opera. Because lets face it. The world has gotten 10 times worse every year since 2004. We need another American Idiot. GOOD POINT. Why not a whole new story? I think Green Day should try to make some SORT of American idiot part 2 without having to repeat themselves
