insomniax Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 I'd rather save that stuff for the live action AAA movie (please let it be!) On second thought, I'd be too OCD about it Well, I'm just obsessed with this whole thing.. oh, Jimmy, Jimmy, Jimmy.. What's AAA?
Lauren Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 Yes! It should be called "American Idiot 2: The Jesus of Suburbia turns 40". It's about his midlife crisis. They already have an album about that. Three, actually.
HolyHandGrenade Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 Well, I'm just obsessed with this whole thing.. oh, Jimmy, Jimmy, Jimmy.. What's AAA? Triple A, basically top studio, top actors, etc...
Cob Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 I've always interpreted Rock and Roll Girlfriend as a message coming from Tunny, used as a tool to show how pathetic Jesus has become in comparison. That's very true. My brother and I always thought, based on the opening song, that it was likely that Jesus had a band with a few friends. I always thought the lyrics to Nobody Likes You implied that. Maybe Tunny was his band mate who made it big? Anyways, I've always loved how Homecoming has, essentially, an open ending. The big sweeping feeling makes me think that J goes back home but turns his life around and puts the pieces back together as his life goes on. Whatshername and it's reflective nature tells me that he at least got his shit together to the point where he can worry about the past.
Todd Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 Now please, I'm a Green Day whore. I like everything they do, so if they come out with a part 2, I'll love everthing on it and ignore all you pessimistic assholes

Guest Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 Normally I'd ask Tman to find me a quote, but he seems unmotivated by the idea I'm about to present, so it falls to you, Cobbie. I'm pretty damn sure that Billie Joe once made a comment about AI and 21CB being at least related, even if AI is not the direct predecessor of 21CB. Cobbie, it's on your to find that for me, because I'm lazy. I consider 21CB to be AI 2, in the sense that had AI not developed the musical style and thematic elements needed for 21CB (and had AI not sold 800 zillion copies), 21CB would not have happened.
Cob Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 So if they made a campaign video against gay marriage you'd hop on that band wagon? I'm pretty sure he's referring to music dude.
Guest Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 So if they made a campaign video against gay marriage you'd hop on that band wagon? Why you gotta open that door, bro?

Guest Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 Didn't open a door, questioned the point he made. Dude, Tman would jump off a bridge if Billie Joe's eighth cousin, twice removed, told him to.

Well Billie has said a couple times that 21stCB is the spiritual successor to American Idiot because he was in a similar state of mind when he wrote it and the themes and reflections are essentially the same, or at least similar. Jesus is "the son of Rage and Love," Christian is "Rage" and Gloria is "Love". They each have there own imagery and design, but ultimately the themes represented aren't different (though 21stCB is definitely more political overall). Musically, it's pretty clear that they're related, so there's no questioning that. Billie stated numerous time that the band's goal with 21st Century Breakdown was to make something bigger and better than American Idiot and just expand on the ideas of that album overall. Obviously it expanded on it, but whether or not it was "better" is subject to who you ask (Tre, for example, sites 21stCB as his favorite album of theirs as well as their best album).
LazyPhil Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 Sequels almost always suck, Indiana Jones 2 was terrible for example, so was Spider Man 2 (and 3), I could go on and on and on...
inthehallwaynow Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 id argue that Jurassic park 2 was just as good as 1 but the 3rd was alright
Cob Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 Sequels almost always suck, Indiana Jones 2 was terrible for example, so was Spider Man 2 (and 3), I could go on and on and on... Spider-Man 2 sucked? You mean the film that was largely considered to be the best super hero film ever until The Dark Knight came out?
BringMoreKnives Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 Hell no, there shouldn't be a part 2. The story is done and over with.
Cob Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 Wow, just reading that has made me realise how specific (and completely different!) my own perception of the story is. In my head, I pictured Jesus and Tunny being childhood friends in Jingletown. When Jesus finally plucks up the courage to leave the neighbourhood in JOS, so does Tunny, but they both go in completely different directions. While Jesus is wallowing in self-pity and is contemplating pulling the trigger on destructive alter-ego in the big city, he receives a postcard from his old friend that just tips him over the edge. (The message being RnRG.) Yeah, my interpretation of the story is completely different from most everyone else's. I've always thought of Jimmy as a completely different character, not an alter-ego of Jesus.
DoodleBob Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 Meh, I like how AI was left open-ended. No need to limit imagination with a sequel.
justcause Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 I always interpreted Rock'n'Roll Girlfriend just as 'Tre has a song' - it sits out from everything else on Homecoming as this little complete thing, whereas 'Nobody Likes You' blends in more, because it's a mood-piece that feeds into the sense of loneliness and abandonment. Tunny doesn't really exist on American Idiot - he's just a name on a postcard in the lyrics book, and of course he was expanded into a character in the musical.
Cob Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 Meh, I like how AI was left open-ended. No need to limit imagination with a sequel. When my friend Jon saw the musical he was upset because he said it interfered and conflicted with his interpretation of the story. I personally agree, it's one of several reasons as to why I don't want an American Idiot movie to be made; I'd prefer it that the story stay personal to the listener and not be fixed into some definitive version.
HolyHandGrenade Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 Sequels almost always suck, Indiana Jones 2 was terrible for example, so was Spider Man 2 (and 3), I could go on and on and on... The Temple of Doom was only bad because they felt like they had to do something that contradicted the heavily Christianity based first movie. like "Hey, look! See all this non-Christian stuff! We aren't making any statements about religion!" Ironically, The Last Crusade, which had perhaps even more Christian references, was miles better.
Dori_Epiphone Posted May 25, 2013 Author Posted May 25, 2013 interesting thread. thx to the mods to keep it open
