BullwinkleCheech Posted May 21, 2013 Posted May 21, 2013 Best lyricist of all time is Shane MacGowan, no doubt.
HumanPate86 Posted May 21, 2013 Posted May 21, 2013 Best lyricist of all time is Shane MacGowan, no doubt. Bob Dylan? Bunch of other great lyricists? I mean, Shane is good, but far as fuck from the best of all time.
MaraGreenDay Posted May 21, 2013 Posted May 21, 2013 Awesome!! I really think that Billie is an amazig song writer, and i don't care what you say, the lirycs from the trilogy are awesome, Billie it's a poet to me just like John Lennon or Jim Morrison (and no, i'm not saying that Billie is like them).
scatteredminority Posted May 21, 2013 Posted May 21, 2013 Billie has always been amazing at writing lyrics. Their earlier stuff has a clever and sarcastic vibe to it and from Warning to 21cb they evolve to be reflective and deep. Lyricly, the trilogy is not that good in my opinion. And please, don't kill me, but I have to mention Pete Wentz from Fall Out Boy because I think he is also an awesome writer.
Dirty Rotten Bastard Posted May 21, 2013 Posted May 21, 2013 Billie is a great lyricist. I'm pretty sure the stuff they feature in Kerrang will be all the 'hits' and focus mainly on 'Boulevard of Broken Dreams', 'Basket Case' and such, but he has some amazing lyrics out there that go unnoticed. I honestly believe Billie is one of the greatest song writers-his lyrics are so good and full of emotion. My two favourite lyricists of all time are Paul Westerberg and Billie. Unfortunately, Kerrang probably will focus less on the 'amazing oh my god that was incredible' type Green Day lyrics and focus more on the lyrics of popular songs. Oh well.
Andrew Posted May 21, 2013 Posted May 21, 2013 I don't even want to read this, it's just going to be "Oh my god Kurt Cobain is so good, he changed my life, even though I wasn't around when Nevermind came out". So sick of it -_- Billie deserves a spot though, as does Alex Turner from Arctic Monkeys, Marilyn Manson and John Lennon, but since it's Kerrang we're not likely to see them. You don't have to have been alive when a song came out to take meaning from it! I agree on the shiteness of Kerrang's range. I doubt even really great lyricists like Tim Mcilrath or Davey Havok will be mentioned in there cause Kerrang rarely cover them.
BullwinkleCheech Posted May 21, 2013 Posted May 21, 2013 Bob Dylan? Bunch of other great lyricists? I mean, Shane is good, but far as fuck from the best of all time. A Pair Of Brown Eyes, If I Should Fall From Grace With God, Rainy Night In Soho? Come on, the guy is brilliant! Dylan is great too, as well as Springsteen and such but Shane is for me top of the list
KKid Posted May 21, 2013 Posted May 21, 2013 I see an All Time Low tour thing over there. So will they talk about their upcoming opening stage performances for Green Day? Am i the only green day fan that shed a tear when I was saw that all time low were supporting? They are possibly the worst guitar band I've ever heard!
Todd Posted May 21, 2013 Posted May 21, 2013 There's nothing on Warning which compares to McLean, McIlrath or Townshend. I'm not talking about pop-punk Dookie-wannabes. I'm talking about musicians who write exceptional music. American Pie is one of the most lyrically complex pieces ever written. I couldn't bring myself to even compare it to punk. No, Townshend's lyrics are good, but not better than Green Day. And this is coming from a 3-year Who fan. I know my shit dude.
HolyHandGrenade Posted May 21, 2013 Posted May 21, 2013 Jack White is one of the best lyricists I've ever come across. He might not have the most... poetic and introspective lyrics, but he finds ways to bend and shape songs to his idea, especially in accordance with his unique voice. Carolina Drama is pure genius. That said, BJA is still #1 for me. Walking Contradiction, Worry Rock, Misery, etc...
Dirty Rotten Bastard Posted May 21, 2013 Posted May 21, 2013 To be honest, Kerrang will leave some of the best lyric writers out though; they only care about what's popular right now. I do believe Billie's lyrics are amazing, as are the trilogies. Paul Westerberg is easily one of the best lyricists yet he won't be mentioned. Nor will Billie's best work. Woo.
Asa. Posted May 21, 2013 Posted May 21, 2013 Billie has always been amazing at writing lyrics. Pete is an amazing lyricist! Billie is probably my second favourite though, after Lennon/McCartney. Billie can write so diversely, from the angst-y lyrics on Dookie and Insomniac to the newer ballads, you can't deny the talent there.
Gregorovich Posted May 22, 2013 Posted May 22, 2013 Yeah no. I'm the first to criticize Green Day a lot of the time by lyrically Billie Joe is a stunning writer. His ability to portray really quit complex and confusing emotions and ideas not only simply, but beautifully is incredible. He's a true poet. I never said he was bad. I just said that he doesn't compare to many other lyricists out there.
MuricanIDIOT Posted May 22, 2013 Posted May 22, 2013 Going to be honest, Billie isn't a great lyricist. Sure, there are a few stand-out moments (JoS, Letterbomb, 21CB), but the standard of lyrics pre-and-post-AI/21CB is pretty average. I'd say Don McLean was the greatest lyricist I've ever listened to, possibly followed by Tim McIlrath. I think Greg Graffin is one of the best lyricists ever
J&TheNight Posted May 22, 2013 Posted May 22, 2013 Did someone say Davey Havok? XD I can't take him or that group very seriously right after "WARN YOUR WARMTH TO TURN AWAY AWAY AWay away..." The delivery of that hurts so much.
stuart_and_the_ave Posted May 22, 2013 Posted May 22, 2013 Just bought this. Billie gets a page. I've only skimmed it but they mention lyrics from Dookie, Nimrod, AI and the triology. I'll scan it when I get home
The Grohl Posted May 22, 2013 Posted May 22, 2013 Just bought this. Billie gets a page. I've only skimmed it but they mention lyrics from Dookie, Nimrod, AI and the triology. I'll scan it when I get home What about the Nirvana stuff? I just want to know if it's worth buying it for like 6-8 bucks here.
Hermione Posted May 22, 2013 Posted May 22, 2013 Ooh Billie's lyrics are my number one favourite thing about Green Day. Glad to see his skills being recognized and looking forward to giving this a read. Just bought this. Billie gets a page. I've only skimmed it but they mention lyrics from Dookie, Nimrod, AI and the triology. I'll scan it when I get home Fantastic, thanks!
K!ngForADay Posted May 22, 2013 Posted May 22, 2013 Warning and American Idiot in general had great lyrics and there's flashes of brilliance elsewhere (Insomiac, Nimrod, 21CB) but Billie isn't one of the best lyricists ever and I hated most of the trilogy's lyrics.
Vic_Rattlehead Posted May 22, 2013 Posted May 22, 2013 You don't have to have been alive when a song came out to take meaning from it! I agree on the shiteness of Kerrang's range. I doubt even really great lyricists like Tim Mcilrath or Davey Havok will be mentioned in there cause Kerrang rarely cover them. I know that, but that album especially is a product of its' time, whereas something like The Beatles' Revolver is timeless; the time it was made, in this case, is more important than simply the fact it exists, if you get me. Also I'm just annoyed at the incredible overrated-ness of Nirvana.
stuart_and_the_ave Posted May 22, 2013 Posted May 22, 2013 I'll scan it soon, just waiting for Mum to finish on the computer. I'll scan the Nirvana page too. Other bands they included were Cannibal Corpse, Black Veil Brides, Metallica, Dead Kennedys and Slipknot. Let me know if you want me to scan any of the others
Cath Posted May 22, 2013 Posted May 22, 2013 I'll scan it soon, just waiting for Mum to finish on the computer. I'll scan the Nirvana page too. Other bands they included were Cannibal Corpse, Black Veil Brides, Metallica, Dead Kennedys and Slipknot. Let me know if you want me to scan any of the others Green Day and Nirvana in the same mag i'm going crazy. i need it. thanks for the scans. that's sweet
Fuzz Posted May 22, 2013 Posted May 22, 2013 Here's a new topic with the scans http://www.greendaycommunity.org/topic/93722-kerrang-scans-billie-joe-armstrong-included-in-rocks-greatest-lyrics/
