You don't need all that outboard gear to get his amp/guitar tone. Those switches and such are necessary when you're playing arenas and running your system through different PA's and acoustic spaces. Otherwise its all amps, guitars, and--most importantly--hands.

Yeah, I guess. I just never understood how the Marshalls were wired in and out of the CAE and all that stuff.

What I wanna learn about is the amp he used for that one appearance on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon when they played the Stones' "Rip This Joint." It'd be much easier, much less time-consuming, and much less expensive to emulate THAT rig instead of his standard live rig shown in this video. All I'd need is just a little more info about it, 'cause the only thing I really know about the amp so far is it has one of the Golub mods on it, I just don't know which one. And there are other things like, what are the settings on the amp? Are those Vintage 30's or some other speakers in the cab? Did he use the Blues Driver for that performance when he went into his solo at the end? For that matter, what are the settings on that Blues Driver? SO MANY QUESTIONS!!!!

To be fair almost any higher end marshall all tube amp with el34 tubes in the power section will do the job in achieving Billie's tune with his lp juniors. The mod on the Pete plexi head is the Dookie Mod and the other head has what is called an SE Lead Mod. Those are his two go to live amplifiers (at one time it also included a JCM 800 i think).

I know what the Dookie and SE Lead mods are, I just don't know which one that amp he used on Jimmy Fallon has, because since it's not painted pink or silver, I know it's not Pete OR Meat.

The Dookie mod is described as 'vintage sounding' and the SE Lead is described as an '80's metal' type of tone. So I think that if Billie was to only use one head, it would be the Dookie mod. The tone on the Jimmy Fallon show sounds a lot more 'vintagey' than it does '80's metal' too me, so i would assume that Billie and Jason are both using Dookie-modded Plexis.

If your looking to get Green Day live tone for cheaper than getting all their live gear, i'd buy a used Marshall Super Lead Plexi or JMP, send it to LA sound design to get a master volume and the 'Crunch mod' installed (the actual name for the dookie mod), a beat up marshall 412 cab with vintage 30's in it, a stock blues driver and a P90 loaded Gibson Les Paul Junior. Still expensive, but sure beats getting two heads.

I need a strap like the ones Mike has with the X's.

Another go-to is this repaired TV yellow Gibson Les Paul Jr doublecut that Armstrong busted during the Las Vegas I Heart Radio festival, which Armstrong uses on all the "Uno," "Dos," and "Tre'" material like "99 Revolutions," "KNOW YOUR ENEMY," and "Stay the Night."

Wait, what?!

Wait, what?!

It was repaired by one of the guitar techs, all the pieces gathered up after their performance. Billie posted a picture of it on Instagram during their break while he was in rehab.

He is referring to the fact they say that Know Your Enemy is a trilogy song.

I had no idea Mike designed the Super Bassman! Now I want it even more... If only it wasn't that ridiculously expensive.

Oh and it's unbelievable that the Blue Billie plays on stage is still the ACTUAL Blue he got for his birthday! I thought it was obvious that he only played a replica because the original must be so old and beat up now. That's really cool!

I don't know if you can get it, because it's custom made!

The one where it says

"Back from the grave, thanks Hans xx"?

I love the fact there's a 'COME TO POLAND' sign behind Billie's guitars.:wub::wub:

Sorry for digging up an old thread, but as I was looking at what Billie's setting are for his marshall (Got a new one for my band) I noticed this.

10xc48p.png

Look at the names for his guitars, Blue, Tele, Smash, Exene, Ric., 59DC, Blackie, and Cloud. The words Sunny and Tele are in black for some reason. I know from what Billie said on the Jeff Matika show, he mentioned most of his guitars have names I.E., Smash, the one from iHeart, and his new Rickenbacker named Rick James, but I was really interested in the 2 others, Exene and Cloud. I know that Billie uses one of his Gibson Junior models just repainted (the sparkly one) and I think that guitars name is Exene. Cloud is the one that I didn't get just for the fact that it has Jeff's name above it. All of Jeff's guitars (except the acoustic used on minority) are wired in to the amp. I didn't think that Hans worked on Jeff's guitars let alone working with Billie's on a live show. I wondered what guitars Cloud could be and the one that popped out the most was Billie's new white Gibson ES-137.

But, after recently looking on Billie's instagram, it look like he has gotten another model of the ES-137 but in a red and black burst that he named Canelo. I know a lot of people are saying that this one and his white one are the same just repainted but they are not. 2 ways to tell are the the inlays on Canelo are all rectangles as his white one has a "C" shape on the 12th fret. Both guitars have the simple volume, volume for both. Also from watching some live videos it looks like Hans put on a third knob on Canelo after this pic was taken from Gibson's factory.

The only other thing that is puzzling me is that Billie uses his J-180 at most of the shows. Why would that one not have it's own channel?

Hey man. I've been wondering about these things myself also. Blue is Blue obviously, Tele is his black single pickup telecasters, Smash is his TV signature junior, Exene is his sparkly Junior, Ric is the Rickenbacker 360, 59 DC is his 59 junior, blackie is the old faithful black 55' junior and cloud must be the 137.

Im not sure how Jeff's rig works. There are parts of Green Day's set where Billie, Jason and Jeff are all playing electric guitar at the same time. You cannot run two guitars at the same time through these rigs. So because of that, Jeff must have his own amp somewhere.

At the iheart radio festival they played St. Jimmy which involved Jeff playing guitar and billie just singing. Jeff played Billie's sparkly junior during this song and was obviously therefore using billies rig.

I wouldn't be suprised if we saw a Billie Joe Armstrong Signature ES137 sometime soon, as that photo was taken at the gibson factory and the BJA junior is no longer being made. Perhaps billie has been visiting.

Billie's J180 does not have it own channel because it doesn't run through the marshalls. It probably goes direct input into the FOH mixing desk.

I watched a few moments before he showed the wireless things and Hans does say that Billie has two cabs, Jason has two cabs and Jeff has one. Also I heard that the reason that Jeff isn't by Jason Freeze anymore is because he has more guitars hence a bigger set up. Last tour I think he only had 2 main guitars, a Gibson acoustic and a Gibson Standard Les Paul. This tour I think he has 5, Both Gibsons I mentioned, a Black BJA Junior, A TV yellow double cut junior, and A Les Paul gold top.

Oh yeah thats true. I wonder which head is powering Jeff's cabinet, he must have a marshall somewhere as well. He was using the black BJA Junior last tour as well for Jaded. But yes Jeff is playing a lot more on this tour and has a bigger setup.

During the 21st Century Breakdown tour he was using a Fender Bassman, maybe his using the same amp and instead of using the speaker of the combo his using the Marshall speaker from the speaker output of the amp.

Here is where it's mentioned: http://mixonline.com/live/tourprofiles/green_day_tour/index1.html
