OneSongInFrench Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 If Jerry Finn didnt fuck it off in the mixing process I'd say Insomniac would be the best produced album of GD but the way Jerry buried the vocals kills it for me Exactly. Billie Joe is so lost in that mix it's not even funny. But otherwise, I love the sounds. Tone is beefy, the drums snap and the bass pops through so flawlessly. Then it's put together and I feel the magic is greatly lost, it's almost a perfect "live" replica of the band in my opinion until you get into that aspect.
DannyDirnt Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 I think my favorite mix from Green Day is Insomniac, as well as Kerplunk. That being said, I think vocals were at their best in Shenanigans. They were understandable, awesome, not as high as now and Mike's voice was perfectly implemented. But any 90s album has Mike's voice perfectly implemented.
Tre's Lost Testicle Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 These albums need that classic Marshall Crunch that they've had in all the other albums, only complaint I have about them really is guitar tones.
Mr Panda Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 TBH the 21cb live from japan tracks sounded perfect for me!! These albums need that classic Marshall Crunch that they've had in all the other albums, only complaint I have about them really is guitar tones. exactly...Missing you is the perfect example of a great song with lame sound!!
JardyOfSuburbia Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 I have to be honest, I am really uninterested in this rumored EP. As a die-hard fan, I will buy it if they release it, but I just don't really get it. Why not release a single from Tre, with a couple of live tracks or a B-side? They just put out 37 new songs in a four-five month span. Why re-release different guitar mixes of those songs? If this is an attempt to give the trilogy some attention and boost sales I think it's a very weak effort. You know how you can help the sales? Make a music video or play more of the new material on tour. I just don't see the point of this EP.

I thought they had already made it clear that they're just doing what they want now. But if you want an explanation, maybe they wanted to release many songs as singles because they have 37 new songs and decided to release them on an EP. Or they simply wanted alternate versions for some songs or whatever. I never thought Green Day needed a 'point' for doing things.
JOE THE X-KID Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 I can see them releasing a remixed version of 99 revolutions for the next single
SumDay Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 I don't think we'll get some kind of EP or a "new" trilogy (would be cool though) but I think they'll just release the remixed songs as singels. But I have to say, I don't care how we get these remixed stuff, just as long as we fucking get them

SumDay Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 But stray heart has already been released as a single labels dont usually tend to re release a single uhm well, I didn't think of that..
jacknovella Posted May 1, 2013 Author Posted May 1, 2013 Yes they would've. They're a massively popular mainstream rock band. They write songs, then they work with the sound guys to get a super-produced sound they can go with. I'm just talking about how they didn't let go 21CB go for a long time because they were tweaking it making sure it was absolutely perfect, especially with the pressure of following up American Idiot. They're by no means a band that will record half-heartedly and release just to make a quick buck.
InvaderPhantom Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 These albums need that classic Marshall Crunch that they've had in all the other albums, only complaint I have about them really is guitar tones. Fucking this! I really hope this is what they're doing in their "remix" process. This crunchy, in-your-face guitar sound was Green Day's trademark sound, and I didn't enjoy the clean guitars in the trilogy at all. I always imagined just how much better songs like Let Yourself Go would sound if they had Green Day's classic guitar sound. They would sound so much more agressive and in-your-face. Just imagine Let Yourself Go with the punch of American Idiot... It would be my absolute dream if they released the whole trilogy with re-recorded guitars, I would love the trilogy so much more. But that seems kinda unlikely... If they only put out an EP with some selected trilogy songs, that's cool too. But it would be kind of a cocktease since you would imagine how all the other songs would sound with those guitars.

I don't want anyone to misinterpret eagerness for heavier guitars for disliking of the trilogy...I love the trilogy, it's an amazing collection of songs. It's just that PUNCH I wish it had a little more of. This is exactly what we're going to get I think. Is it too early to speculate on when we might hear this stuff? If at all? They're on a break between legs of the tour now right? Maybe we'll see an EP with remixed guitars, with maybe one or two more official music videos, interviews, etc to give that final push for the trilogy and the tour.
jacknovella Posted May 1, 2013 Author Posted May 1, 2013 I'm actually really hoping that these re-mixes gain them a lot of commercial success. This is serious speculation, but my perfect scenario would be that the re-mixed tracks result in new music videos for X-Kid and Stay the Night, because they deserve to be huge singles and have SUCH potential to be hits. Totally agree with you. Stay the Night is one of the songs that would benefit the most from the remixes I think, it would be more similar to the version we heard back in...2010 was it? At the soundcheck? As others have said the songs Billie Joe hash-tagged did seem like potential single choices so it's entirely possible we might see a music video or two in the near future
Todd Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 I think my favorite mix from Green Day is Insomniac, as well as Kerplunk. That being said, I think vocals were at their best in Shenanigans. They were understandable, awesome, not as high as now and Mike's voice was perfectly implemented. But any 90s album has Mike's voice perfectly implemented. The vocals were best in shenanigans? And you do realize the shenanigans songs were recorded throughout 1994-2002. So you're pretty much saying you like old Green Day. Because each of those songs are mixed just like the albums that they were b-sides to.
Westside Highway Posted May 2, 2013 Posted May 2, 2013 I still dont get how the trilogy is over produced... when compared to 21st or even AI its nowhere near over produced yeah its really just good quality not over produced. I mean they're not going for the fuzzed out punk sound anymore so its just a bit cleaner. I think it gives a nice punch in the face but the trilogy would be really cool if it sounded like lo-fi like this this first time i heard that i thought it could be the beginning of one of the songs and i got so happy. I hope they release the demos they made over the summer in that one studio i forgot what it's called
TimmyChunks Posted May 2, 2013 Posted May 2, 2013 I wonder how Rob feels about this or if he's involved at all, if what they're doing is actually remixing/ reproducing the Trilogy. Not like it matters at the end of the day- the boys have produced without Rob before, and I'm sure they will again, and it's not like Rob's in the band. However, they've had a close relationship for a long time, and I wonder if there's a level of dissatisfaction with Rob's production of the Trilogy or whether there has been any fallout as a result. Just curious more than anything, but it wouldn't be the first time that they've decided to move on from Rob's direction. Also, I never caught the full story behind why they moved on from Butch Vig after 21CB. I read some interviews where it sounded like both parties had just decided to move on, but I never really got any more info than that. It sounds like 21CB had a taxing/ challenging recording process. Maybe Green Day is a tough band to produce given their level of perfectionism and their high profile. Any thoughts?
AlissaGoesRAWR Posted May 2, 2013 Posted May 2, 2013 i like them to have success as well, never said anything different. it just shouldnt be an indicator if a record is good or not. the person i quoted spoke of a "failure"... Oh, that's the part you didn't like? I meant "failure" in the sense of being a chart-topper (if the intent of this re-mix is to be a chart-topper, as some have suggested). Not failure in the sense of it being a bad set of albums. The albums are on repeat constantly for me and I like them a lot. Hope that clears that up. Missing you is the perfect example of a great song with lame sound!! That's actually the song I was listening to when I was thinking "damn, this just sounds way too twangy" this week. I love the song, I love the bass breakdown, I love the lyrics, but I can't help but wonder if it was recorded a little differently if it would be epic. It's very catchy. I have to be honest, I am really uninterested in this rumored EP. We don't know if it's an EP yet. We just assume, as per usual. I'm a little skeptic myself. I have mixed feelings. I don't want whatever this is to feel like a "re-do" because then that just makes me sad because of what that implies concerning their feelings toward the trilogy. But we'll see what happens! There has to be a point? They want to release an EP, so they do. I think they like to make us think they "don't have a point" and "don't care" and are just "doing what they want." But you can't tell me everyone doesn't have a tiny part of them that wants their product to be successful. It's only natural. I'm actually really hoping that these re-mixes gain them a lot of commercial success. This is serious speculation, but my perfect scenario would be that the re-mixed tracks result in new music videos for X-Kid and Stay the Night, because they deserve to be huge singles and have SUCH potential to be hits. My two favorites from the trilogy! X-Kid is perfect to me as it's recorded and I actually prefer that to the live version most times. Probably because it's what I heard first. But Stay the Night dominates when it's played live. It's so much better. I'm sure both could benefit from different recording. I always thought Stay the Night would be a big hit when I first heard it in 2010. Unfortunately, it seems like no one pays much attention to it anymore.
Mr Panda Posted May 2, 2013 Posted May 2, 2013 That's actually the song I was listening to when I was thinking "damn, this just sounds way too twangy" this week. I love the song, I love the bass breakdown, I love the lyrics, but I can't help but wonder if it was recorded a little differently if it would be epic. It's very catchy. yea exactly...it is among my personal favorites...just wondering how it would sound through a Marshall amp!!
Misterglasshalfempty Posted May 2, 2013 Posted May 2, 2013 I'm gonna jump on the assumption that they're re-releasing some of their songs with dirtier guitars, and I have very mixed feelings as well. Personally I would love the heavier sound, it's what makes Green Day sound like Green Day to me, but it's way too late for that now. Now that the records are out, it seems too strange to go back, record them again and have two versions of the songs out there. This is why I personally son't believe that this is what they are doing. As someone have said, it's more likely that they're just messing around, or working out a sound that works live.
scottrowan200 Posted May 2, 2013 Posted May 2, 2013 I like the guitar sound on the albums. It's dirty but clean. As they say ea end of the dvd you can heer every flick of the wrist and you actually can heer the guitar sound. Not just destroyed with distortion
IcyMoffatt Posted May 2, 2013 Posted May 2, 2013 Maybe they want to remix some songs of the trilogy to create an album like a «remixed trilogy best of». But the «just having fun in the studio while being bored at home» hypothesis appears more plausible to me.
HaushinkaSins Posted May 2, 2013 Posted May 2, 2013 im totally down with all this happening... mainly cause I want them to go back out and do some promo and get these albums to have the recognition they deserve... and I want them to go on The Ellen Show. SO FUCKING BAD.
Blond-O-Sonic Shimmer Trap Posted May 2, 2013 Posted May 2, 2013 I think 99 Revolutions is the song that would most benefit from beefed up guitars. The studio version lacks energy, if they got it closer to the live version it would be hugely improved. Likewise with Kill The DJ, but since 99 Revs hasn't been officially released as a single that might be the one they tour during the summer.
germanfuzaloo Posted May 2, 2013 Posted May 2, 2013 Seriously stop posting dookiefied shit (it's insulting tbh and not good). Running zero tone on a Jb pup with a muddy amp was dookie, leave it alone. I don't mean to be all rant-like, but when billie's fucking around in the studio, he's not taking blue and running it through his PETE amp. He uses P90 equipped guitars, juniors, specials, customs, es, Gretsch, etc. The most out of this we will see will be him reinventing and tweaking his Marshall tone, Vox cleans, and his live sound (which saying that this album was produced too much is dumb in it of itself, because very little was...compare to AI and 21cb). And maybe we will get him to use his voice in a different way like he did for earlier albums, or something new. Dookie was a $1, 500 amp modded to have evrn more distortion. Stop talking.
