Mike Dirnt's negative comments on Cuatro

I think that he just would like to play new songs on stage and since the band has said more than once to be proud of the trilogy, I think he would be happier if fans were asked songs from uno dos tre

If he really meant it, then those poor saps who requested Christie Road at every show this past leg of the tour are in for a surprise!

He said that because they wanted to only play new stuff that show, not old stuff. I can see his frustration because when you have a plan, and people don't agree, stuff gets annoying.

Also, even though I think Mike's comment was exaggerated/not entirely serious anyway, I'm glad they're happy to show a negative comment like that instead of just showing the band kisses fans' arses. Not all bands would do that

i dont think the fact Mike said this was because they are tired of playing old songs because they play old songs in ever single shows of the tour included Christie Road. to me its like someone said above and what they explained in Quatro, they played a secret show in a small venue at Tiki Bar to play only new songs and then Mike got frustrated when someone asked for Christie Road because they clearly announced before starting that they were gonna play only trilogy songs.

Said this in the iCuatro!-Thread while this topic was closed:

it was during that part right after the Tiki Bar show where they played new songs only and BIllie always said We're playing only all new shit tonight. And that guy was constantly requestion Christy Road - I think that's the simple reason for Mike saying it like that after the show. I'm sure they love playing the old stuff just as much.

I watched Cuatro, and there is one part where Mike talks about how it bothers him that so many fans yell out to him to play Christie Road, and he says he feels like hitting those people with his bass. He goes on to say those people should go back to 1992.

I was actually very sad to hear him say this. Many fans love Christie Road, and I do not understand why this upsets him. If anything, I would think he would be sick of playing Longview, Basket Case and When I Come Around, since those have been on their setlist ever since Dookie came out. It is a rare treat to hear Christie Road live and I am sure none us mean any disrespect to Mike when any of us yell this out. Maybe he was just having a bad day when this was filmed?

Did anyone else feel this way, or is it just me?

The reason he was saying this is because they were playing a show full of ONLY NEW SONGS. Fans kept yelling Christie Road when they were playing and only trilogy setlist because they were "beta testing" the new material for that crowd.

I think it was because for that show they were playing all the new songs that would be coming for UNO DOS TRE, and after saying they were doing only new songs, they kept requesting them. thats y he got upset a bit.

Here's the thing, regardless of how much I may want to hear a song, unless the band is asking for requests, I'm not going to shout anything out. It's pointless. The band has a setlist established, odds are they're not going to play anything you're yelling out. I'm going to agree with everyone that's saying it was probably just because the entire purpose of the show was to play new songs, and the frustration stemmed from the fact that people were just requesting old songs, rather than appreciating the new. I think this thread is just asking for over-analyzation.

during my show when billie asked for requests i yelled wow thats loud! and every looked at me like i was insane. heh excuse me then

idiot. bands play for audience and audience will request songs they like. if he did not want to play for fans, they could stay in their shitty studio with the new shitty songs. I don't particularly like Christie Road but as someone said, it is better than all the songs on the trilogy.

And the bullshit about taping shows, they have enough money not to care about that.

Seriously, dude, calm down.

Did you really get the impression that they were worried about the shows being taped because of money? I doubt people hearing some crappy phone recordings of songs could cause them to lose much. Seemed pretty clear to me that it was because they were nervous enough to perform songs that no one had heard yet in front of a small audience, so the idea of loads more people hearing crappy versions of them was really quite daunting! Can you imagine putting so much emotion and work into creating songs and then being faced with the prospect of thousands of people hearing them for the first time in really poor quality? I don't blame them for being cautious and I think it was great of them to take that risk.

As far as what the audience wants......they were playing shows to showcase their new songs in preparation for their new albums coming out. If anyone in the audience didn't want to hear new songs they shouldn't have bought a ticket to such an event.

Harsh... To be honest, I don't see why everyone is analyzing what he said so much. I watched the clip: he was emotional, but not hostile. He was just annoyed that his excitement regarding the trilogy songs was not met. On the other hand, what can you expect if no one has heard the songs before?

But whatever, this is a lot of fuss over an silly comment.

most people on youtube would realize that crappy quality doesnt mean a crappy song. and for some of the trilogy songs it is better not to understand the lyrics to be honest.

I've never been to a Green Day concert so I would want to here some of the older stuff at least once. Of course, I want to here new stuff too, but don't see why it would be bad to put in old stuff. I do understand why it might be annoying though.

Some bands do not like shows being recorded by fans which is their right to be against it

I don't think he was bashing the song. And that was at a point where they were discussing playing a bunch of new songs, instead of a bunch of hits, correct? They were trying to figure out what to do with all the new music. And those shows were the greatest. Not a bunch of the same old hits but 20-40 brand new songs. I would want to punch the guy in the face if they actually played Christie Road instead of Nuclear Family or Fell for You. So Yeah, it was just part of the discussion.

At most concerts they play looooaaaads of old stuff and they enjoy it so don't worry about that! It was just that they were playing those particular concerts specifically to try out playing the new songs. It makes sense that being pestered to play old stuff at those concerts could be annoying, but most of the time they like doing it.

Not to mention, even though they didn't like the idea of the new songs being filmed they still said fuck it and played the shows despite the fact that they'd inevitably get filmed! So I'm not sure what there is to complain about.

Yep seems every day there's somebody who finds something so minuscule to nitpick about

Probably because it's a fucking old song and people need to stop going back to the past. They went to that gig strictly wanting to play brand new songs and some idiot is screaming "PLAY CHRISTIE ROAD" It's rude. I don't think he was being mean at all.

Same. I do think the comment was a bit rude, but I think we've got to know a lot more about Mike these last months. We saw many many good things about Mike. He's always nice and tries to be helpful in every situation. He's a hard worker. I think sometimes he has the right to complain or something. Billie has rants and no one (exceptuating the iHeart one) is dissappointed, sad or anything.

U know what pisses me off is not Mike's negative comment but i once saw Billie wear a pair of shoes with white laces how dare he wear white laces it's supposed to be black laces ill never ever forgive him...

Dude, I'm not gonna write a long and meaningful explanation for a bunch of butthurt people. There's no point of repeating what people have allready said, I find this thread pointless.

Neither of you need to moderate this thread or debate whether it should exist thanks. Never mind telling other people what to post, and if you think this thread is pointless feel free to not click on it.

I don't see anything wrong with what he said. I think it is quite obvious that they are still proud of their past work and are happy to play it most of the time. I think it is just frustrating when you're playing a small show with the intention of debuting new songs and people are yelling to hear a 20 year old song.
