Guest Posted April 8, 2013 Posted April 8, 2013 I think they made a huge mistake in having Butch Vig to do 21st Century Breakdown, and I think they know it, too. Rob makes great albums! Before you guys wail on Butch Vig too hard, remember that he produced Wasting Light for the Foo Fighters. That was one of the best-produced, best-sounding albums I've ever heard. Mixing it on tape was definitely a brilliant move. Autotune wasnt used on 21st Pitch correction, voice modification, call it whatever you want. Billie Joe's voice on 21CB was not natural, and the album suffered greatly for it.

I'm not sure if the pitch was modified at all, but there was definitely some dumb effect on his voice. Just listen to how bad Murder City came out. ugh Such a great song, too.
localinsomniac Posted April 8, 2013 Posted April 8, 2013 Billie's vocals sound canned and unnatural on Breakdown. I hate them irrationally.
MaraGreenDay Posted April 8, 2013 Posted April 8, 2013 It´s so hard to say so i´m going with American Idiot, the Trilogy and 21stCB.
iScottie Posted April 8, 2013 Posted April 8, 2013 billie's vocals on 21cb sound like they came out of a tin can. terrible. the trilogy is a huge improvement, probably the second best after american idiot. So many great sounds on the trilogy. So many different and unique ones, too. I agree 100000000% with this post.
Sarahnade Posted April 8, 2013 Posted April 8, 2013 American Idiot easily gets my vote for this one. Everything on that album sounds the way it should. I think it's more balanced than all of their other albums production-wise.

And you're 100% dead on Wasting Light is excellent I love Butch's production but I can understand why people don't like 21st production

Nemo. Posted April 8, 2013 Posted April 8, 2013 I think I like the sound of AI the most... It's so idk how to describe it "clear"? and it sounds angry and awesome I really love it.
PanicAttack! Posted April 8, 2013 Posted April 8, 2013 The trilogy sound is the best because it sounds like the Warning sound taken to its full potential. Maybe I'm biased because this is what's new, and therefore exciting, but I haven't enjoyed listening to Billie Joe's vocals as much as I've done on these records. There is a few songs which doesn't have this signature sound though, some for the good -> "Makeout Party", "Kill The DJ", but also some misteps like "Lady Cobra" and "Nightlife", the latter of which I would've liked very much if it wasn't for those crappy lead vocals. I like American Idiot's sound as well. 21st Century Breakdown was a mistep on many of its songs (not all), and Dookie, Insomniac and Nimrod seem similar and very average in their sound, it's not bad, but it isn't exciting either. I prefer a very clean sound with a good bottom and a crisp and warm lead vocal with a good amount of high end, but if a record would have to go through alot of filters to get a certain sound then a very professionally compressed one like on American Idiot is acceptable. The thing is, the moment you begin to go beyond the pure and clean sound, then you have to go all the way and really mix it properly, and that takes an expert and alot of time. American Idiot seems to be a success of that, and 21st Century Breakdown seems to be an equal failure, and their older records hit a safe middle ground. I don't think there was much idea behind the sound of their first two records to be honest, it's whatever equipment they had to record with and whatever time and resources they had to mix it. So to say you like that sound over the rest is to say that sound doesn't really matter that much. But iUno!, iDos, iTre! and also Warning had the best sound.
Drop Dead Hideous Posted April 8, 2013 Posted April 8, 2013 Loved the production of 21st Century Breakdown. The grandeur..
Jude O'Reilly Posted April 8, 2013 Posted April 8, 2013 I simply cannot choose between AI and Dookie.
JIGD13 Posted April 8, 2013 Posted April 8, 2013 The trilogy has 3 different sound and are 3 different albums
Anaïs. Posted April 8, 2013 Posted April 8, 2013 I love American Idiot's Who-inspired arena-rock feel, but Warning has always been my favorite of theirs in terms of sound. It feels like a breath of fresh air, a lighter Green Day thanks to the prominent acoustic guitar ("Warning"), but still maintaining some insanely catchy riffs ("Castaway", "Minority", "Waiting") and a fair amount of diversity ("Misery"), though the latter is nowhere near Nimrod or 21st Century Breakdown levels. Maybe it's because the lyrics are also more optimistic than other Green Day fare, but Warning has a sunny sound to me. It's my ultimate summer album.
LittleBoyNamedTrain Posted April 8, 2013 Posted April 8, 2013 I couldn't choose between American Idiot and 21CB, but I went for 21CB because that Les Paul has a fucking fabulous sound.
Kerplunk!!! Posted April 8, 2013 Posted April 8, 2013 Voted the first just cos i love the youthful sound of Billie and Mike's vocals plus the tone of it but i'm a little confused on the topic starters opinion of Billie's vocals on the trilogy, i know it's not everyone favourite but imo some of Billie's finest vocal performances are on this and i'm not sure that down to him taking drugs recently when he has probably taken certain substances on/off his whole career.. I think the vocals on the trilogy are more of a result of a lifetime of singing and Billie's stint in musicals..
