Sirens-of-Decay Posted March 4, 2013 Posted March 4, 2013 I agree about AI vs 21CB. There was something about 21st Century Breakdown that make it seem "sculpted to perfection" to the point where it was an effort to listen at certain points. Yeah, I enjoyed it, but there was something that American Idiot had that 21st Century Breakdown was missing. I guess AI had a bit more of the in-your-face punk sound, while still being mainstream quality. Also, I think if Rob Cavallo had produced 21CB it would have been completely different. Whatever happens, I really think their next album is going to be amazing.
Sarcasm Posted March 4, 2013 Posted March 4, 2013 To be honest I hope it's dark, gritty and bitter. I always like Billie's angrier lyrics, the way he has with words is just amazing. It's not like it's a lack of material, iHeart, rehab, regrets and shame. All ingredients for exactly what I want, and that's kind of mean to say, I realize that as I'm writing it down, but damn, some of the Insomniac lyrics I consider to be the best he ever wrote.

Especially when an album like American Idiot was pretty much born out of discontent, especially the more politically themed songs like Holiday or American Idiot.
nothing_wrong_with_me Posted March 4, 2013 Posted March 4, 2013 I think whatever Billie's gonna write, the lyrics will be pretty dark... He once said in an interview that he just can't write happy songs, for him is more interesting to sing about sad or angry feelings.
Sarcasm Posted March 4, 2013 Posted March 4, 2013 I think Nimrod shows off that gritty, foul-mouthed sound even better with The Grouch, Platypus, and Take BackThose aren't bad songs at all, but Nimrod still feels like it has too many happy tunes. When I say gritty and dark, I mean musically as well. Most of the songs on Nimrod have major chord progressions, not minor. (I could be bullshitting, it's just how I remember it )

(I could be bullshitting, it's just how I remember it ) Yeah, instrumentally Nimrod is way more catchy and I find it easier to pick up on the melodies. Apart from Good Riddance and Redundant though, I see it on the same level lyrically as far as topic and diction goes.

With Nimrod, he walked into the studio and wrote the lyrics as they made the music, something he later said is one of his regrets and that he'll never do it again

By the way, was Platypus written earlier and saved for Nimrod? If that's true, then my argument really is defused
mylilPWNy Posted March 5, 2013 Posted March 5, 2013 Oh god, if Green Day did a shitty 8-track sounding album... I'd jizz EVERYWHERE. Dookie was kind of polished for it's time, but it aged though, I guess that's why it might sound that way to us, but Foxboro Hot Tubs... I'd love a Green Day album that sounded like that, the drums weren't so poppy, the guitar sounded crunchy, and the bass was amazing. Sounds a little too good to be true. I wish Stray Heart wasn't so polished, I liked it live WAYYY better.
GreenCard Yellow Day Posted March 5, 2013 Posted March 5, 2013 They're gonna do a full rap album with the lead single being called "Money Booteh Booteh" feat. Nicki Minaj. The song will make it #1 .... The sad part is that it probably would.
Punkfreak1414 Posted March 5, 2013 Author Posted March 5, 2013 Good point on stray heart! It's a great song but I was expected a more raw version that wasnt so "happy"? If that makes any sense. Same thing with carpe diem, I was hoping for it to be angrier but the reverb on billies voice kinda ruined it for me, I also missed the "1234!" That he tells before the chorus/: oh well I'm not green day. There still such a awesome band!

That's why so many opinions on this thread are that a low-fi, gritty, 90's Green Day album would be awesome.
Twisted By Design Posted March 6, 2013 Posted March 6, 2013 I want something more similar to their live performances. Drop the real clean production. This trilogy definitely sounded better to me than 21st did. It would be cool to see them write some more wild rock n' roll with some really cool dirty distorted tones.
LIZISPARANORMAL Posted March 6, 2013 Posted March 6, 2013 In my opinion Green Day should try to create another album about there life ,past, future and present But as much as i wish i was green day I'm not this is just my opinion but whatever GD Album will be about it will be unique and it will be them and nothing can stop them from being them except obviously there selves. Green day we love you
Guest Posted March 6, 2013 Posted March 6, 2013 A full on Jug and Banjo album featuring vocals by Tre Cool called, "One Night In Jingletown". Haha, but in all seriousness I hope the next album gives me that dark feeling like American Idiot's videos did but somehow drags some "hope" into it.
Ryan Posted March 6, 2013 Posted March 6, 2013 I would absolutely despise another album that sounded like 1,039 or Kerplunk. 21st CB was an absolute masterpiece. I also adore the sound of the Trilogy. I agree with a previous poster that I would love for Billie to write the music for a Broadway show. He is so incredibly talented and it would be an awesome use of his skills.
Thatsername Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 I would love another rock opera, maybe a mixture of the AI style and the epic Tre spirit. Less political, more personal, deep, reflecting, honest. That'd be awesome. Sometimes I also think they should just kick their label and do the release on their own. Other bands have done that. I mean, the label really sucked at promoting the trilogy. The albums and each single would have done way better if the label had done anyting to promote them. They could have, even with Billie in rehab. So maybe this would be the right time to become independant, because it's a turning point for Billie and for the whole band. And I'm not sure if I want them to realease a new album so soon. I mean, of course I would love to get new music, but somehow I feel they have to slow down a little, especially for Billies sake. It's like Mike said in the Rolling Stone interview - is it really neccessary to climb a new mountain while already climbing a mountain? When they return on stage soon, they should promote the hell out of the trilogy and then rest a little. For the Dookie and AI anniversary, a new live DVD of the 99 revolutions tour would be awesome. Then maybe around 2016, they come back out of nothing and wipe us off the floor with an overwhelming new album, like back in 2004.

Labels have a hard time promoting albums and singles without a band to be able to tour labels spend MILLIONS of dollars and that is millions GD would have to pay back before they can get royalties from the trilogy now that the band is back I'm sure the promotion will get back on track As far as running a label I won't say it's not undoable it is BUT it'd take ALOT of their tine away from creating music plus all the EXTRA work it'd cause em even with a team it's still a 24/7 job to make sure everyone is doing their job correctly they have Adrienne but it's very small scale plus even that is owned by Warner them doing a label could be done but doesn't seem to interest them
raul.stanciu Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 A 40 minute mature record, in the vein of Tre! (like Walk Away, X-Kid, Amanda or Little Boy Named Train), but with some fun tracks too if possible, because it would suit them (and their age) and possibly put them back on track. The trilogy is not a failure by any means, it's just not promoted enough and that's a real bummer.
Comrade Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 Already? Really? Well something new. They've done the rock opera and grand scale to death. They've gone back to 90's basics with parts of the trilogy and it's divided fans. They're past the party rock thing and Billie is sober, so that won't work. Something grown up, not punk. It'll reflect what Billie is going through, so it'll be coping with a rebirth in middle age. It'll be a coming to terms album, more mature. I'd like to hear a bit of Dylan, Springsteen and Bryan Adams in there. Maybe some Clash sensibilities, but nothing that sounds 'young' because frankly, they aren't now. Bowie's new album, The Strokes going forward - those are things to look to. Creative maturation. It won't be for at at least three years yet though so it's all conjecture.

You make a really good point actually about the party rock thing, especially as Billie Joe's songwriting is generally highly autobiographical, it would almost seem phoney to come out with songs about getting wasted and partying (like Dos). Personally I'd really like something similar to American Idiot sound wise, with maybe even more mature themes and more of a coming to terms album like you said.
Guest Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 Something that sounds like The Clash would be lovely, but unfortunately I don't think they have the talent for it. I don't care what the next record sounds like, to be honest. No matter what it is, I'll buy it and I'll listen to it. But it's gotta be better than the trilogy. Even just fart out a half hour album of angry 2 minute songs. Something with some passion and rawness.

I'm not so sure, I was surprised by some of the trilogy songs, music wise - what with the return of the guitar solos and some of the more unique sounding songs like Wild One...although I'll admit that my music taste isn't vastly diverse so it might seem less impressive to someone who is more musically aware. I like your idea of them just throwing something together and putting it out there, almost like Insomniac? Billie's comment in RS about maybe going for a more live and 'shitty' sound got me really excited about future albums.
