Guest letterbombb Posted March 16, 2013 Posted March 16, 2013 Speaking about ‘Broadway Idiot,’ director Doug Hamilton told Billboard, “The thing that surprised everyone is that bit by bit, Billie Joe got really interested in the show and was finding a personal connection with it. He talks about how he idealizes the early period of Green Day where there was a real community of musicians and, as Green Day got bigger, they lost a lot of those friends. He wanted a community, and what he says in the film is that it blindsided him that he found it in theater. He fell in love with the cast as they did with him.” Catch the ‘Broadway Idiot’ trailer below. http://loudwire.com/green-day-broadway-idiot-documentary-concert-performance-sxsw/
LisaBJA Posted March 16, 2013 Posted March 16, 2013 "How do you compare his involvement with that of other musicians? Pittelman: I've worked with a lot of stars, but I have never quite seen this. He became the dad and Adrienne, his wife, became the mom. He played softball with them, he remembered everybody's birthday, he'd be there 45 minutes before warm-up and every night he'd put on some kind of costume. One night he went out on the street as the Naked Cowboy. The cast is all kids who are major Green Day fans. This sounds corny, but it was inspiring." This is so warm-hearted, Billie Joe is such a wonderful person. He made so much for this musical

Guest letterbombb Posted March 19, 2013 Posted March 19, 2013 Green Day and the Creative Process: Story of Two Films, 'Broadway Idiot' and '¡Cuatro!' http://www.billboard.com/articles/news/1552424/green-day-and-the-creative-process-story-of-two-films-broadway-idiot-and Watching the band members succumb emotionally to a new arrangement of a song exposes their vulnerability, a quality nowhere to be seen in "¡Cuatro!" Seeing Green Day open up in a way that would have been out of character around the time of "Dookie," warms the heart for the rest of the film's journey. As "Broadway Idiot" progresses, the "Armstrong as fish out of water" dissipates as he becomes more and more actively involved in the musical, taking a fatherly role with a cast that ultimately he will join. Catharsis is in abundance, none more so than in Armstrong realizing he had found a camaraderie in the theater that he only had a taste of early in Green Day's career. Director Doug Hamilton brings together Armstrong and musical's director and music supervisor, Michael Mayer and Tom Kitt respectively, for an intimate discussion that explores Armstrong's connection to musical theater and how, subliminally, it may have affected the way he writes. Kitt hears a bit of "Chorus Line" in an Armstrong tune, a comparison that humbles Armstrong. That particular segment was shot right before Armstrong went into rehab and derailed Green Day's promotional activities and tour. Neither film gives any indication that Armstrong was in any way out-of sorts. He appears clear-headed and ambitious, a hard worker looking for anything that can challenge him, whether it's the club gigs prior to the release of "¡Uno!" or the risk of attempting to play the role of St. Jimmy on Broadway. Green Day stopped by the world premiere of the two films to introduce the double bill. "Welcome to our nightmare," Dirnt told the full house at the Paramount Theater, half of which was ardent Green Day fans. It's not clear what part of being filmed was nightmarish for the band -- camera shy is not a quality any of them seem to possess. They wind up with two exceptional films, one that will impress and educate their fans, "¡Cuatro!," and the other, "Broadway Idiot," deserving of mainstream distribution that touches on more universal themes such as risk, creativity and bonding.

Overjoyyed Posted April 22, 2013 Posted April 22, 2013 how do film festivals work with regards to choosing movies? does the director just send the movie in hopes it gets a spot? how long can we expect Broadway Idiot be shown in various film festivals? don't film festival films have to be relatively new? like i always thought film festivals are there to premiere movies..

JardyOfSuburbia Posted April 22, 2013 Posted April 22, 2013 This is the most obvious comment ever, but I really hope this gets a DVD release. This sounds like one of the best things a Green Day fan could own and I really, really want to see it!
lazyboness Posted April 22, 2013 Posted April 22, 2013 I'm debating whether or not I should buy tickets for the showing at the Berkeley Rep. I already have tickets to see Paramore the same night in San Francisco, so I'm really conflicted.

lazyboness Posted April 22, 2013 Posted April 22, 2013 Broadway Idiot. Paramore will play a lot from self titled and it sucks. Their self titled album is actually my favorite of theirs to date. This is also the last time I can see them playing small-ish venues for a while. GD aren't touring at this time, so the only reason that I'm debating going to Broadway Idiot instead is in hopes of seeing the band there.

desertrose Posted April 25, 2013 Posted April 25, 2013 Inside look at Green Day Doug Hamilton devoted years to his documentary 'Broadway Idiot,' about the punk band, and he will join the rockers at Newport Beach Film Festival's on opening night. "You have one of the biggest rock stars in the world who is willing to try something totally new — an artist willing to try something out of his comfort zone," said Hamilton of the story he discovered while on assignment. "I thought that was really interesting and had a universal story." As a result, Hamilton created "Broadway Idiot" as a look into Armstrong's newfound love of Broadway and its behind-the-scenes camaraderie. One memory that has stayed with him: Green Day inviting the theater company to its Oakland-based recording studio, Jingletown, where, together, they fashioned a new take of "21 Guns." "When the final version of the song was played back, with everyone in the mixing room at Jingletown, the energy was electric," Hamilton said. "People were laughing and crying — I think from the intensity of the emotion and the pride everyone took in what they had done. They had all worked so hard, and so it had created a very, very special moment for them, and fortunately for our cameras." Thinking ahead to the Newport Beach Film Festival, where he and members of Green Day will be present, Hamilton said he is thrilled that "Broadway Idiot" will be featured as the opening-night spotlight. Adding to the wow factor is the fact that Newport Beach "is kind of a home away from home," since it's where the group comes to surf and write music, according to Hamilton.
