tammy_cool Posted February 8, 2014 Posted February 8, 2014 In all honesty, the only songs on the trilogy that I dislike are Troublemaker and Nightlife. I hate them. The rest of the trilogy, however, is awesome. I even like Loss of Control, Baby Eyes and Sex, Drugs & Violence. Thank God, I've finally found a kindred spirit amongst all this mess.
munns6691 Posted February 8, 2014 Posted February 8, 2014 lyrically speaking, I think I'd have to rank GD's albums: AI, 21CB, then Insomniac. Outside of that it is a toss up for me besides the trilogy and 39/smooth being at the bottom of the list. I dunno Nimrod and Warning have good ones too. Dookie has a few gems too. Honestly lyrics are by far their strength so it's almost impossible to rank really.

Meanwhile all the way through Insomniac is just sneaky genius. It is a very tough thing to rank honestly and I could not do so beyond the top 3 That was mean. Not like you've been super pleasant through the whole discourse. Doesn't really change the facts of the matter.
Hermione Posted February 8, 2014 Posted February 8, 2014 lol they are two different albums with some striking similarities. Hope this makes it clearer. How are they the same? Well 1.Both Rock Operas. 2.Both preach political and media injustice. 3.Sound the same. Disagree with you there. 21st CB isn't a rock opera (and the band have literally said it's "not a rock opera" when interviewers have described it as that), a rock opera by definition has a storyline. 21st CB doesn't have a storyline, it just happens to feature characters and has an epic type of sound. And as for the sound, they built it on American Idiot for sure, but I think they built it much further to the point it sounds very different. American Idiot for the most part has more of a big rock sound whereas 21st CB is much more experimental on top of it, more complex and full of all kinds of different instruments and strange sounding songs like Peacemaker or ?Viva La Gloria?. And the falsetto! I'm more used to it now obviously but when it first came out it really sounded strikingly different from anything they'd done before with that singing and the more classical elements in the music. At that time nobody was saying it was just like AI, they were saying it sounded different and took things much further/was even more ambitious. It took the band a hard slog of several years to make it as well, it wasn't like they just rushed out a quick follow up to ride on AI's success. Granted there are similarities in the some of the subject matter and in the "epicness" of it but I don't think it's just a copy at all, it was a natural progression, and they'd made plenty of progress.
Spike Posted February 8, 2014 Posted February 8, 2014 The songs on the whole may not be as good on 21CB as they are on American Idiot, but the performances and actual sound are a huge progression. The arrangements are more complex, the overall sound is bigger, there's a wider range of instruments used, a wider range of subjects covered in the lyrics, Billie's vocals are significantly better and there's a wider range of styles. Sure it's not as strong an album, but the particularly good songs on it (the title track, Peacemaker, Restless Heart Syndrome) are absolutely incredible and are up there amongst the very best of American Idiot. It's not a 'copy', it's a natural progression and there are clear differences.
billiesboy Posted February 9, 2014 Posted February 9, 2014 I just feel AI and 21CB aint the real deal when it comes to Green Day. I think they are easily Green Days most commercial albums, if not the only commercial albums they've ever released. 21CB being even worse obviously written and released to ride on the wave of AI. Even though the trilogy isnt a big hit in my book at least they are back on the right track. Glad they left the st jimmy and all that bullshit behind. Just wish the musical never happened.

But surely the album was 'commercial' because it was good, rather than being intentionally commercial? No one knew it was going to explode like it did. Just out of curiosity, would you feel the same way if American Idiot had only performed as well as Warning? It's not like anyone else was doing anything similar to American Idiot at the time.
billiesboy Posted February 9, 2014 Posted February 9, 2014 I must admit that you have a point. I think I have a problem with AI attracting a new kind of audience. I still believe 21CB was written to milk the success of AI though. GD have always been good at doing something different with every new album but 21CB was in many ways a compromise to make the new AI fans happy.
Iva Posted February 9, 2014 Posted February 9, 2014 I think Wow that's loud is solid but the riff is awesome. Would be an interesting song to hear live. Yes, please! Wow... just wow... ...that's loud.
AlissaGoesRAWR Posted February 9, 2014 Posted February 9, 2014 I feel that American Idiot's (the album) replayablity is kinda low. I really like it, but I can't listen to it as a whole too often anymore. Take it back! I used apathy to describe how you're repeating your arguments over and over again. Exactly our point. Apathy = lack of interest, enthusiasm, or concern. How is that word even applicable in this situation? Redundant, perhaps? Or repetitive? I must admit that you have a point. It is a very tough thing to rank honestly and I could not do so beyond the top 3 I think Insomniac is overrated lyrically. It has Amatage Shanks, Stuart and the Ave. Stuck With Me, No Pride and Walking Contradiction which are gems but the rest don't match up with all of Warning and most of Nimrod.
Spoopy Doo Posted February 9, 2014 Posted February 9, 2014 I feel that American Idiot's (the album) replayablity is kinda low. I really like it, but I can't listen to it as a whole too often anymore. It's mostly the other way around for me; most of the time when I'm listening to an American Idiot song, I'm playing the whole album (minus one or two songs). The songs on American Idiot I listen to on their own are usually Letterbomb, Jesus of Suburbia, and American Idiot. I feel like a bad fan for not listening to American Idiot very often. I listen to the Trilogy more than American Idiot (including Letterbomb, JoS, and AI).
HolyHandGrenade Posted February 9, 2014 Posted February 9, 2014 I dunno Nimrod and Warning have good ones too. Dookie has a few gems too. Honestly lyrics are by far their strength so it's almost impossible to rank really. Yes, i totally agree. Nice Guys Finish Last and The Grouch have a great sense of humor, while still making interesting points. Hitchin' a Ride has a very unique style of diction - "cold turkey's getting stale, tonight I'm eating crow. Fermented salmonella poison oak...". Redundant continues the spirit of Walking Contradiction - "I cannot speak, I've lost my voice, I'm speechless, and redundant..." Worry Rock has a very powerful message and storyline from a broken relationship, Uptight does the same with suicide as a topic, Platypus hurls out some gnarly insults, King for a Day is... King for a Day , and of course, Good Riddance and Prosthetic Head. Deadbeat Holiday, Macy's Day Parade, and Fashion Victim are really solid too

Deadbeat Holiday, Macy's Day Parade, and Fashion Victim are really solid too Pretty much all his lyrics are great but I'd say The Grouch is one of his most poetic and meaningful songs, it sort of imagines where he'd be had Green Day failed and he lost his dreams and it really rings true and its also a really clever and bitter song but its also really fun and has a great melody. Its a perfect Green Day song IMO

You forgot Panic Song (blasphemy) Tight wadd Hill, Westbound Sign, and Jaded (also excellent). And that is 9 songs that personally rank among their best, Outside of AI/21CB

I don't think Panic Song, Babs' Uvula Who, Jaded or Geek Stink Breath should be overlooked. It's a brilliant album lyrically, maybe not every song is perfect but most of the songs are fantastic lyrically for one reason or another, whether it's wit, humour, clever word plays or just pure vitriol.

They're fine live, but when I'm listening to the album I find myself skipping tracks and listening to only about half of the album altogether.

Even if I like a song, just knowing that it was released as a single demotes it in my mind. I just like deep cuts more inherently - it all feels more personal - like I really identify with them Hipster? I don't know...
billiesboy Posted February 9, 2014 Posted February 9, 2014 Whats with fuzz about Holiday anyways? The chord progression is so old it makes it boring and the same with the melody. That song has been written one million times already.

anna-maria (GD4ever) :) Posted February 9, 2014 Posted February 9, 2014 1. I don't like 1039 sosh or kerplunk that much 2. Insomniac is fucking strong and amazing 3. I fucking love AI and 21st CBD 4. The trilogy is wonderful but some songs are repetitive and that makes them less beautiful 5. I fucking hated nightlife. I hate rap 6. Brutal love, 21 guns and last night on earth are awesome ballads and belong to my top 10 list. 7. Shenanigans is great 8. BILLIE JOE IS AMAZINGLY HOT..HANDS DOWN!!! 9. I really don't think that Green Day fans (us) are irritating or whatever..we are one of the greatest fanbase 10. Mike's voice is not as good as Billie's at all..
Michele Sgambelluri Posted February 9, 2014 Posted February 9, 2014 I customized my phone with the background of Uno, Dos, and Tré. I have on my phone some backgrounds based on the trilogy. The backgrounds are colored, beautiful and cute. So I can customize my phone with backgrounds that I want. I also have animated gifs of Uno, Dos and Tré, that can be used as a screensaver. Always in my phone I set it as a ringing tone the song Oh Love, message alert tone while as I set Kill The DJ. I created with my phone a style based on Uno, Dos, and Tré, and I am very happy to have something original. Here's the background that I have in my phone. What do you think? As a model of cell phone, I have a Nokia 3110 Classic in black for almost 5 years (since 2009). With Micro SD of 2 GB where I keep all the things that I downloaded of Uno, Dos, and Tré: backgrounds, wallpapers, music, etc.
