Unpopular Green Day Opinions

Dos is a good album, but definitely not the best of the trilogy. I want to bring into your attention something called 'Signature Green Day songs', songs that only Green Day could make. The sound of such songs is easily distinguishable. These were the kind of songs that got Green Day the success that they enjoy now. They don't exactly have to be punk, pop-punk or whatever, but they are unique and different in comparison to a lot of things we hear. Like American Idiot, Holiday, Basket Case,BoBD,Longview etc.

The problem is that Dos lacks such signature songs. Uno had Nuclear Family, Carpe Diem and Loss of Control. Tre had 99 Revolutions and X-Kid, songs that ONLY Green Day could make. The only signature song that I found in Dos was SWTRLF, not Stray Heart, Lazy Bones or any other song. In fact, I'm pretty sure I've heard the riffs of Fuck Time, Ashley or Wild One at some point in my life in other songs. SWTRLF does not stand out in comparison to the likes of XKid, 99 rev or Nuclear Family. It sucks when you compare it to those songs. And if you removed Sweet 16 and Troublemaker from Uno, you had a spectacular album. Tre wasn't that bad either, exception being Drama Queen and SD&V.

I think that's a good point. It's the kind of thing that has to be unashamedly balls-out to work. The coyness makes it seem like he knows he's being a bit naughty in a way that he should be ashamed of, which makes him come across as a creepy old man. Compared to Fuck Time, which is just blatant fun for how in your face it is, it just seems a bit slimy.

I think it's meant to be a bit slimy, it's the mid life crisis thing where he's tempted by sex drugs and rock and roll or whatever, in Makeout Party we see both the fun side of giving into it and the darker, creepier, slightly cringeworthy side. It's an authentic mid life crisis!

And I thought that was exactly his intention - being creepy. Because it´s exactly the picture and feeling I get when I listen to this song. It/he is creepy. Dirty old man.

I like makeout party and lady cobra for the sound. Not necessarily the lyrics, thats a whole different story. but just to listen to and chill theyre fun to hear.

and about FBHT having a dark side, I never listened to the words as closely as I couldve but now that go back and listen there are some dark and even sad sounding lyrics. ex: "voices in my head telling me im lost, pills and alcohol are making me a lost cause". kind of a creepy foreshadow in a way... im surprised he played it live at Elis.

He said something in the lines of having an alcohol problem in his first Rolling Stone interview back in January '95.

Billie's problems with drugs/alcohol have been going on for far longer than most fans like to admit.... I've no doubt that FBHT lyrics and pretty much all of his lyrics about drugs, etc., were coming from a place of drug useage.

Exactly. Everyone seems to overlook Hitchin' A Ride, at the very least. I still don't understand when people claim they'd like Dos more if it was a FBHT album rather than a Green Day one. What difference would it make?

agreed. you can find songs all the way back to nimrod that said something. and i don't think people really gave it a second thought until these past couple years, i surely didn't until 2012!

He can be all of those at once. A lot of people turn out to be drug abusers (he was sincere about that, compared to many) and one would never ever have an idea...

I think fans like to sugarcoat Billie and make him out to be a family-friendly rock star, or unsullied hero, or angel or something. Drug abuse and alcoholism don't exactly fit into that version of Billie.

Yeah, that's true. Especially after American Idiot came out and the new influx of young fans (me included) happened, that weren't necessarily aware of his past. It's weird, it took me a while to accept that he was a druggy because he seemed so straight edge around 2004/5. It's no big deal to me at all but I can see why some people might be uncomfortable with that. Although my argument there would be don't be into a rock band if you're totally against drugs...

...or get into AFI or Fugazi, I guess?

I'm straight-edge myself minus one orange beer with 2% alcohol every year or two and rum in my cookies; but I never minded people using light drugs or drinking socially (as in: not getting drunk). However, whenever somebody is en route to ruining their own life, of course it's natural to be concerned, regardless of their relationship with you, if any.

I guess because if it was a FBHT album, it'd not be Billie who wrote it and sings it, but an alter-ego. Which is actually a wonderful double way of looking at things, because on the one hand it'd be the Rev who wrote/sung it so you can chalk it up to him instead of Billie, but on the other hand you know that it's Billie and even if it's an alter-ego, it's still coming from a place.

oh and I think Lady Cobra and Makeout Party sound fucking awful. I never even listened to the lyrics because I dislike the sound of it so much :P

Dos is a pretty up-and-down album for me, because it has a few of my favourite songs (Stray Heart, Lazy Bones, some more) but also some godawful songs (the previously mentioned ones, Nightlife which is even worse, the intro and choruses of Ashley).

At first listen, Stop Drop and Roll is a goofy album with equally goofy lyrics. With each subsequent listen, one begins to realize that this album is a dark journey into the mind of the narrator. Drug and alcohol usage is referenced constantly, along with strong religious themes in songs like "Mother Mary" and "She's A Saint Not a Celebrity." Great album all the way through.

Same here really. I was 15/16 when I really discovered them and I was quite naive in many ways, I couldn't really believe (and, in truth was a little disappointed when I found out) that they did drugs. Seems sill to look back on it now though!

I've never been a fan of Lazy Bones. Is it the best song on Dos? Probably. Is it one of Green Day's best songs? Hell no.

That video just makes it even more abundantly clear how fucking awful the vocal filters on the Trilogy are compared to AI.

I'm actually beginning to slowly like Dos more and more. Ok it's not Green Days best work but there's some really strong tracks on there

mte. had to turn it off after about a minute, ew.

i love lazy bones though it's one of my top five green day songs tbh

You lot just can't appreciate quality when it's there! :P

I think I said something nice about it a couple of pages back . Check any of the threads about Dos/songs off the trilogy though, not liking Lazy Bones is definitely unpopular! Pretty sure most people were raving about it and it was by far the favourite song on the album when there was a poll pole for it. It has wonderfully honest, personal and hugely relateable lyrics and kind of a classic simple and catchy Green Day sound, what's not to like?

Dos is the worst lyrically but the best instrumentally in my opinion. That said, I feel like everything comes together more nicely on Uno, and Tre just has better melodies that benefit from more a washed out guitar tone more than the others would.

The tones are all 95% the same anyway...

Not sure if it's unpopular or not, but I wish he still dressed like that and wore eyeliner. Like, eternally.

Don't let that guy who was obsessed with him wearing a yellow tie instead of a read one hear you say that.

What? I mean, I like black and yellow together, but black and red/purple/pink are superior. Yellow is like fourth place.
