Z J Posted February 3, 2014 Posted February 3, 2014 Castaway is the catchiest song they have EVER done. top 3 favorite GD song, that bassline is incredible. That hook is unfair, and his vocal runs are fantastic
Iva Posted February 3, 2014 Posted February 3, 2014 Actually, re-reading the new member's post, it's good. If one read behind the part where they insulted about every single person on here, the way they connected the albums to ideas and stages of life is precisely how the music evolves. Nice one!
cocoepops Posted February 3, 2014 Posted February 3, 2014 top 3 favorite song, that bassline is incredible. That hook is unfair, and his vocal runs are fantastic YES YES YES thank you SOMEONE FINALLY AGREES WITH ME THIS NEVER HAPPENS
Iva Posted February 3, 2014 Posted February 3, 2014 I had a friend in high school who would've agreed as well, but I have not seen her since October 2002. Castaway was her number one jam.

Spike Posted February 3, 2014 Posted February 3, 2014 Ability does not equal understanding understanding does not require ability. I think this needs to be the opening post in this thread. I absolutely hate it when people argue that you shouldn't criticise something unless you can do better. It's just the height of stupidity. For what it's worth, I've been playing for 10 years, have been in numerous bands, written and produced my own album and have a degree in Popular Music, and I think, on balance, the Trilogy is shit. Does that make my opinion more valid than anyone else's? Does it fuck.
Anaïs. Posted February 3, 2014 Posted February 3, 2014 While I generally prefer the studio version of East Jesus Nowhere--much more oomph--there are two things I greatly prefer in the live version. 1) I really like it when, in place of the backmasked "Don't test me," Billie counts off in German. The Nazi imagery isn't exactly subtle, but nothing about the rest of the song is either, so it totally fits. 2) I think EJN is one of their songs where the faster live tempo is actually a significant improvement. It's still a pounding march, but it's more intense and frenzied, like a bunch of emotionally charged fanatics are stepping in time to it--exactly the image the song is supposed to conjure.

Perfect use of crowd-interaction that is integrated seamlessly in to the song. It's a pure genius lyric, and the imagery live that you noted is great.
N3W_H4V3N Posted February 3, 2014 Posted February 3, 2014 1) "Is everyone on this thread so submerged in their own incompetence here?" Way to make friends and influence people. 2) "It's not lousy on their part, it's lousy on ours." I'm sorry, that's bullshit. The Trilogy is objectively far weaker lyrically than other GD albums. It's not that I'm not trying to like and connect to "The Forgotten", it's that it's made of shitty, vague cliches that don't mean a damn thing. An artist is capable of failure, and in this case Green Day failed, not us the listeners. 3) "Don't criticize what you can't understand." Ooh, forgive me, wise one. I understand just fine. I understand that I hate the Trilogy because the lyrics are often, quite frankly, abysmal compared to GD's previous standard. I don't care how much they connect to what was going on in the band's lives when they wrote the songs, they're juvenile and cliched and uninspired. It's not that I'm lyrically illiterate or am unaware of what was going on in the band's lives when they wrote it. In short, don't be so condescending, and welcome to the forum. I'm not trying to be condesending, Darth. Im sorry if i came off as being like that. I was just scrolling through and spotted several groups of people debating over the irrelevance of Green Day's work, and just thought i should give my 'Unpopular opinion'. speaking of which, why are we still talking about this instead of contributing to an argument that's utterly useless?! We could be making the world a better place, promoting equal opportunity for all and donating our time to help stand up for the defenseless, yet we all are arguing, "Oh yeah, my opinion about our favorite band isz bettr than urs lolz" Not saying anyone on this current thread is. Not trying to make anyone feel bad. Just trying to open people up to new realms of thought that most think was previously impossible to conceive. I like the part where he tells us we can't understand after stating at length that he can. Of course he can understand better than us, he's in a band. Unlike any of the rest of us, right? My point was that try to connect with the lyrics and see what you could connect with; they're not just words on a piece of paper. & I'm not trying to say that, because im in a band, i understand better than you do. no, im just saying that the fans my band has are really passionate about our music because we try to really hit on the parts of life that no one wants to talk about, but needs to know that someone out there feels a sense of empathy. We also have fun with our music, but our fanbase is comprised of people who already 'know us' in a sense.
Guest Posted February 3, 2014 Posted February 3, 2014 Your band's next album should be called Master of Condescension. Fucking hell. speaking of which, why are we still talking about this instead of contributing to an argument that's utterly useless?! We've hit the jackpot you guys.
N3W_H4V3N Posted February 3, 2014 Posted February 3, 2014 Damn....where to begin? Darth Praxus pretty much summed it up, but I'll say this: your logic flawed because it just assumes the artist is infallible (Green Day and Billie are far from it). Also, your appeal to authority is meaningless because it assumes that all of us here are a) not musicians ourselves b) and it assumes that we should just take your word for it. That age old argument is a joke and is used by professional athletes in the states all the time. Ability does not equal understanding understanding does not require ability. im sorry i was tired and was just about to get back to work on my lyrics. btw is there any possible way i can remove the condescension in my post? Your band's next album should be called Master of Condescension. A condescending hypocrite? Like I said, I'm sorry. Btw That is a good album name for some of the songs i have written. Thanks!

There's a very simple solution for not getting called condescending, and that's not being condescending. He'll survive. Besides, I am being nice. I haven't even called him a cunt yet.

Unpopular opinion: I LOVE Restless Heart Syndrome. The lyrics are heart wrenching and the way it ties into Know Your Enemy gives me chills every time I hear it. Because Know Your Enemy begins with rallying against other people, knowing that "they" are the enemy. So for Restless Heart Syndrome to turn that around and say "I am my own worst enemy - know your enemy" UGH I just got chills even typing it out. It's just a brilliant piece of writing.

stories and songs Posted February 3, 2014 Posted February 3, 2014 ^ I thought it was unpopular? I could be wrong. I mostly just like raving about Restless Heart Syndrome. I've gotten the feeling in past discussions of 21CB that a lot of folks don't care for it.

Jollyroger118 Posted February 3, 2014 Posted February 3, 2014 @Sarcasm, thanks. @Céadóg like i said im sorry. You are forgiven. Least as far as I care considering its an online chat room. I agree with some of your stuff like I find I "feel" Green Days stuff a little different cause I know so much about the band and where they were at as they made that record and that song and whatnot. "American Idiot combines all of this and thus is the end of this period of Green Day's teenage rebellion: (1039=Whatsername, She's a Rebel, Extraordinary Girl Kerplunk/Dookie= AmId, JoS, St. Jimmy Insomniac= Blvd. of Broken Dreams, Are We The Waiting Nimrod= Wake Me Up When September Ends Warning= Holiday, Homecoming)" This I didn't really get. It seems like you'd lose the worth of a song when comparing and tying it to their older stuff like that. I guess you can say it was the end of their "rebellion" but I don't know. American Idiot was written to be American Idiot not end all these themes they had brewing for fifteen years. I don't know if you're saying the band consciously did that but if you are I'd certainly disagree. "Uno...Dos...Tre! attempt to try and uphold Green Day's former selves, yet they reach a point of understanding hardly any artist ever did....'We are old, tired, and worn out, and we must remember those who sacrificed themselves to make our journey possible. We must pay tribute.' This is the endpoint of another Green Day era." I really wish I felt there was such a strong theme and meaning to the trilogy as you did and I do think a lot of artists don't reach that point of knowing they are old and tired and I don't think Green Day did until after the trilogy. If anything it felt like "I'm old and wired and I wanna really live at all costs". And in the end it cost the quality of the music as well as probably a lot of personal stuff we'll never really know about. This has been a really tough time for them and even though I'm not exactly thrilled by the trilogy I still love and support them. They could never make any new music again and they'd still be my favorite band just cause of how much I love all they already did. "My point was that try to connect with the lyrics and see what you could connect with; they're not just words on a piece of paper." I cant argue this as I too write lyrics and sing and play guitar and reading the lyrics is my favorite thing about music. Which is coincidently why I was let down by the trilogy. "& I'm not trying to say that, because im in a band, i understand better than you do. no, im just saying that the fans my band has are really passionate about our music because we try to really hit on the parts of life that no one wants to talk about, but needs to know that someone out there feels a sense of empathy. We also have fun with our music, but our fanbase is comprised of people who already 'know us' in a sense." Yeah. I was gonna say something kinda condescending myself but I'll just say every real lyricist feels that way. Cause in reality its us that feels like nobody understands and wants to talk about OUR problems but WE want to know someone has empathy for us. And by "real lyricist" I mean not the pop on the radio or 99% of rap but the people who make an art out of it. "why are we still talking about this instead of contributing to an argument that's utterly useless?! We could be making the world a better place, promoting equal opportunity for all and donating our time to help stand up for the defenseless, yet we all are arguing, "Oh yeah, my opinion about our favorite band isz bettr than urs lolz" This looks like a job for Superman! And as for everybody attacking you, lol
