Anaïs. Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 It's like my life's mission to introduce this version to all 21 Guns misunderstanders Is there a lossless version of this? Because I'm tempted to replace the studio cut.
Guest Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 Is there a lossless version of this? Because I'm tempted to replace the studio cut. It was on the 21 Guns CD single, so there must be FLAC. http://www.discogs.com/Green-Day-21-Guns/release/3379670 My best advice is to talk to Tman, he has all this shit
Mar Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 To be honest, I actually prefer the American Idiot musical version of 21 Guns I don't hate the original 21 Guns (just got kind of sick of it in 2009) but it's AMAZING how much the musical version brings out in the song. To go back to the original, I think the shitty live TV performances (AMAs) and it being overplayed really kind of made it seem like the song was shit, but it's one of those songs that when it hits you, it hits you. It's easy to gloss over and get annoyed by it, but it does have merits.
AlissaGoesRAWR Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 21 Guns really isn't that bad of a song. I think, like Mar, I just got sick of it. Kind of like BOBD, except that was the first Green Day song I ever knowingly heard, so I have a sort of attachment to it nonetheless. To be honest, I actually prefer the American Idiot musical version of 21 Guns Mind you, their version of know your enemy is still better than the original. I thought I was the only ones who thought these things.
Anaïs. Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 I wish the studio version of JoS had had the lyric "Am I retarded or am I just unemployed?" as it sometimes does live, rather than "overjoyed". The rest of the song is lyrical perfection, but I can't figure out what Billie is trying to say with those particular lines as is.
Z J Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 Billie not going in to falsetto live fits the live version so much more than a falsetto would. The piano/guitars are louder live and it is far more of a rock song. Whereas in the studio it is more laid-back instrumentally. His voice is stellar on that track, his breathing technique never better. I wish the studio version of JoS had had the lyric "Am I retarded or am I just unemployed?" as it sometimes does live, rather than "overjoyed". The rest of the song is lyrical perfection, but I can't figure out what Billie is trying to say with those particular lines as is. Yeah I agree, and the "unemployed" version is actually genius, I think. Overjoyed makes sense though if the line is isolated to me. He's being sarcastic, or at least that's how I've always read it.

That line with 'unemployed' is just genius. Shame he only seemed to have thought of it after the album was recorded. 'Overjoyed' does work too, but it's not as good.

I will say "overjoyed" sounds more pleasing to the ear than "unemployed" coming at the end of that couplet, just not to my brain.

Spike Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 One guy sung that, when Green Day had a concert in Pennsylvania. Billie did it live for most of the American Idiot tour
Bastard of 1969 Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 Billie did it live for most of the American Idiot tour Wow, I didn't notice that. But in 21CB tour, he sung overjoyed i guess.
Spike Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 Wow, I didn't notice that. But in 21CB tour, he sung overjoyed i guess. Yeah, he changed it back after the AI tour. He sings 'unemployed' on Bullet In A Bible.
Cath Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 Yeah, he changed it back after the AI tour. He sings 'unemployed' on Bullet In A Bible. no actually he sings overjoyed in biab!
AlissaGoesRAWR Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 I don't remember what he sang this tour, because I was too busy drooling and acting like I had a stroke or something during that song.
munns6691 Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 I agree, those three songs are better than most on the trilogy, especially Dreamcatcher (but Olivia's my favorite) however I feel like if they were produced as the trilogy was it would have ruined the songs same as Stay The Night and Drama Queen which were played around the same time. Oh and I was listening to Dreamcatcher the other day and the solo sounds a lot like Redundant's I think Olivia has superb lyrics too Well keep in mind neither song was complete and Dreamcatcher was done in basic jam style so I'm not sure there was even a set solo to play beforehand
Spike Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 no actually he sings overjoyed in biab! Oh wow. It's been a while since is watched it, haha. Well it SHOULD be unemployed in any case
Bastard of 1969 Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 Oh wow. It's been a while since is watched it, haha. Well it SHOULD be unemployed in any case It should.
DookieLukie Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 Oh wow. It's been a while since is watched it, haha. Well it SHOULD be unemployed in any case Why? That isn't the real lyric and overjoyed makes much more sense in the context of the verse.
walking_c0ntradicti0n Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 he says unemployed in the Fox Theater show from 4/14/2009, just listened to it
Spike Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 Why? That isn't the real lyric and overjoyed makes much more sense in the context of the verse. The 'real' lyric is whatever Billie wants it to be since it's his song. Personally I think unemployed makes far more sense in the context of the lyric, and as social commentary, but each to their own.
Jollyroger118 Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 Well keep in mind neither song was complete and Dreamcatcher was done in basic jam style so I'm not sure there was even a set solo to play beforehand You don't know if Olivia wasn't complete, just cause it doesn't have a chorus or the full band doesn't mean that wasn't the song. But Dreamcathcer most certainly wasn't complete as when they hit the end it sort of falls apart lol but I do think Olivia was.
Z J Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 unemployed makes it a genius line. Overjoyed sounds better, but isn't as good of a lyric. Simple.
Mar Posted January 20, 2014 Posted January 20, 2014 I'm indifferent to both lines. I think they each convey a different meaning: Overjoyed kind of implies that he's simplistic, easily amused and that his happiness comes without much effort, kind of like a complacency; why do anything else when I'm content right here? Unemployed kind of implies that he's unmotivated and without purpose, and is questioning if it's because he's just without a job/lazy or if there's something like a developmental disability keeping him from moving on with his life. (Of course, I don't know if using "retarded" was a great choice, but I'll save that for a discussion with SJWs )
Sanket Posted January 20, 2014 Posted January 20, 2014 Billie's vocals on live versions of Stop When The Red Lights Flash are REALLY bad compared to the album
Guest Posted January 20, 2014 Posted January 20, 2014 Billie's vocals on live versions of Stop When The Red Lights Flash are REALLY bad compared to the album Billie's vocals on pretty much every song are really bad these days
