munns6691 Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 I'm not sure whether this is an unpopular opinion or not...but I hope Green Day don't share a lot from the studio the next time they go in to record an album. I hope we don't get the video updates, and I hope they don't play the songs live before they've recorded them like they did with the trilogy. Personally I prefer it when there's more mystery behind an album...and while those video updates were really exciting and I enjoyed watching them multiple times to pick out small details, I'd prefer it without that sense of voyeurism. A lot of us (the majority?) listened to the live recordings of the trilogy songs loooooong before we heard the studio versions. I'm all for Instagram updates, the odd snap from the studio here and there maybe, I just crave the moment when you finally get your hands on the new album...and you've heard very little about it, and you discover it for the first time. Anyone else have the same thing? I totally agree, I'd almost like to listen to no songs before listening the album all the way through. A huge letdown was the fact that "Olivia", "Oh Girl" and "Dreamcatcher" were not on the trilogy.

Anyone else have the same thing? I see what you mean, but that's how these things are these days. It's a marketing tool primarily, and I get the impression the band enjoy doing it. While I see what you're getting at, I'd argue that they can do what they want, and if you don't want album 'spoilers' or whatever, you don't have to watch the videos, or look through Instagram, or look for live videos, and those who do want to can do so. I don't think it's remotely voyeuristic. Bands have been doing this kind of thing for a long time now, and personally I love the documentaries, seeing the writing process, generally knowing how things are coming along, etc. I can understand why anyone might not like that, but it's fairly easy to avoid if you're that bothered.

Anyone else have the same thing? I agree with this, though I also agree with Tom in that it is quite easy to ignore. With Breakdown, I listened to almost all the album (bar about 5 songs) before I got it. That way, the album's release wasn't that special. The Trilogy was different, though. I purposefully ignored all the live shows they did in 2011, and I only listened to things that were officially released - like the videos they did for Nuclear Family and Troublemaker, and obviously the singles. Actually thinking about it, I did listen to some of the live performances before I got the albums, but not many. The result was that listening to the albums for the first time was much more fun.

Oh of course, I'm not disputing that they can do what they want (duh they're Green Day ) or that people have the choice to indulge in anything they choose to reveal. I definitely think they enjoyed it last time, although Billie Joe's comment in one of the Foreverly interviews about never telling anyone about making a record again could suggest they might do it differently next time around. I'm just old fashioned I guess, I like sitting down with an album for the first time and not knowing almost everything about it (like I did with UNO). While it's entirely possible to avoid all the spoilers, when this is your favourite band, and you follow everything they do, and you're aching for new music...it's harder than you might think to abstain. Although I will next time around Don't get me wrong, I really enjoy seeing the writing/recording process coming along and seeing the documentaries etc...I'd just rather enjoy that after getting acquainted with the album and the songs, not the other way around. Whatever they choose to do though, I'll support That's just what I personally hope for.
DoodleBob Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 21 Guns live is absolutely incredible I really wish they had made the studio version more like the live version. Like, when the bridge happens and it's only Billie Joe and the piano. Wow, imagine how amazing that would be.
The Disappearing Boy Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 21 Guns live is absolutely incredible Apart from billie's voice.
Jollyroger118 Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 I totally agree, I'd almost like to listen to no songs before listening the album all the way through. A huge letdown was the fact that "Olivia", "Oh Girl" and "Dreamcatcher" were not on the trilogy. I agree, those three songs are better than most on the trilogy, especially Dreamcatcher (but Olivia's my favorite) however I feel like if they were produced as the trilogy was it would have ruined the songs same as Stay The Night and Drama Queen which were played around the same time. Oh and I was listening to Dreamcatcher the other day and the solo sounds a lot like Redundant's I think
Spike Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 Apart from billie's voice. I have to disagree there. I take it you mean how he doesn't go falsetto in the chorus?
The Disappearing Boy Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 I have to disagree there. I take it you mean how he doesn't go falsetto in the chorus? Yes. I can understand how it might be difficult doing falsetto every time for every performance, but I just don't like the way he shouts out "twenty one GUUUUUNS!", it just doesn't work for me.
JOE THE X-KID Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 I prefer the shouting to the falsetto I agree, those three songs are better than most on the trilogy, especially Dreamcatcher (but Olivia's my favorite) however I feel like if they were produced as the trilogy was it would have ruined the songs same as Stay The Night and Drama Queen which were played around the same time. Spike Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 Yes. I can understand how it might be difficult doing falsetto every time for every performance, but I just don't like the way he shouts out "twenty one GUUUUUNS!", it just doesn't work for me. I love how he does that! Each to their own I guess, it didn't sit right with me at first but it grew on me to the point where I actually prefer it to how he does it on the album. I think that's down to the fact he can hit the notes more accurately in full voice, so the album version wouldn't have needed the tweaking on the falsetto.

I think that's down to the fact he can hit the notes more accurately in full voice, so the album version wouldn't have needed the tweaking on the falsetto. It's just far more powerful, too. And it makes the falsetto in the live version that much more special when it happens.
Spike Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 It's just far more powerful, too. And it makes the falsetto in the live version that much more special when it happens. Good point! It's spine-tingling when he hits the falsetto in the last chorus when he's done the rest in full voice, whereas by that point on the album version it's lost all impact.
DookieLukie Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 I really wish they had made the studio version more like the live version. Like, when the bridge happens and it's only Billie Joe and the piano. Wow, imagine how amazing that would be. Orgasm. That amazing.
Anaïs. Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 I have come to the conclusion that Stray Heart would be about forty-two times better if Mike got to do some harmonies in the chorus.
The Disappearing Boy Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 I have come to the conclusion that Stray Heart would be about forty-two times better if Mike got to do some harmonies in the chorus. That's very precise. Why 42?!
Anaïs. Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 That's very precise. Why 42?! It's the answer to life, the universe and everything, dear chap.
The Disappearing Boy Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 It's the answer to life, the universe and everything, dear chap. Bugger - I should've seen that!
tammy_cool Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 To be honest, I actually prefer the American Idiot musical version of 21 Guns
Anaïs. Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 To be honest, I actually prefer the American Idiot musical version of 21 Guns Seconded!
The Disappearing Boy Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 21 guns is the only musical song I like, and that's coz it's got the band in it Mind you, their version of know your enemy is still better than the original.
Guest Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 wow it's crazy how much it's better! It's like my life's mission to introduce this version to all 21 Guns misunderstanders
