I like Jason just because he´s so unobtrusive and calm. He´s Green Day´s mother... :D

I wonder if Jason just joined Green Day as Billie's sober companion. He's ideally suited to the task.

Sure he is

Stay the night wouldn't sound out of place on 21CB, obviously if it was recorded differently. I actually wish it had the 2010 intro now.

Seen here responsibly sleeping off that one small sip of beer he took from his small glass on his one night out per year.

He has no need to be different. Why should he?

In the old days, Mike was absolutely essential; unfortunately, the band's pretty Billie-centric now. These days, in terms of ability at least, any competent drummer could replace Tre.

I disagree with both points. Mike is the bassist and a bassist is essential to any rock band. Who cares if he writes the lyrics or sings or gives in-depth interviews? He could never speak to any Green Day fan ever again and never show up for an interview or never write another lyric and he'd still be essential to the band's makeup just because he is the bass player. As for Tre, I think each drummer has their own style, and while many drummers can copy that style, I don't think you can ever get it quite the same. Everyone has their own little thing, whether it's how hard you kick the bass drum or whether you use your left hand for the hi-hat or your right hand, everyone has that one little thing that makes it their sound. So yeah, as a drummer, I can play the exact beat for anything Tre plays on almost any Green Day song, but that doesn't mean I sound like Tre. He has his style, I have mine. I've been playing his beats for eight years now and I still don't sound exactly like him, and I doubt he'd sound exactly like me if he tried to play something I came up with.

I feel like Mike has become much more essential in the past year and a half, seeing as he stepped up and spoke on the band's behalf multiple times. Maybe he's not the frontman, but it's not like he isn't contributing his share.

Does anyone think it's kinda weird that the Trilogy was meant to be a huge massive fun project for the guys, and yet Mike, Tré, or even Jason contributed exactly zero lyrics to it?

I was actually discussing this with my brother earlier and he suggested that Green Day should change their name to "The Billie Joe Show" :P

Just look at the whole Iheart radio thing when Billie smashed his guitar. Mike also joined in, would anyone else have done that?

Well, yeah. Probably. I mean, I would have. Pretty sure most GDCers would.

Wait, does this qualify me to play bass in Green Day?

Yeah, that's pretty interesting. But that said, why do they have to write lyrics to find it fun? It's not their primary role in the band, and Mike at the very least sounds like he's having a lot of fun with his bass parts. I sure as hell wouldn't find it fun to try and out-lyric Billie, even given how questionable the Trilogy's lyrics are for the most part.

That really annoyed me. I didn't see it as an act of solidarity, it was just fucking annoying and stupid.

Are you seriously suggesting that even Tré couldn't out-lyric Makeout Party? It makes Like A Rat Does Cheese look practically Wildean.

Like A Rat Does Cheese is just made up of a load of old rap lyrics :P

And no, I'm not, but he didn't, so meh

I know it is, and that's my point. Mike and Tré contributed lyrics to both of GD's most serious and epic albums. I find it odd that they didn't have anything to add to a huge 37 song unfiltered jam session.

Unfortunately, I think they've both taken a backseat to Billie's ego and are content with that. I wish they'd do what The Who did--while Pete Townshend was the primary songwriter, he always gave John Entwistle one song per album in recognition of his talent. And Pete, God bless him, has one of the biggest egos in rock and roll, which says a lot about Billie.

Gotta agree. It's not like they have to worry anyway. They could retire right now and live off the BOBD money for the rest of their lives.

I see what you mean, but I guess it just comes down to what they wanted to do. It wouldn't surprise me if they saw how many sets of lyrics Billie was writing and they just thought fuck it, why bother. Or maybe they wrote one of the many scrapped songs, the potential quality of which is a bit worrying given how bad most of the songs that made it onto the albums are. Maybe they weren't taking it seriously and that's why they didn't contribute anything. And anyway, Mike sings the best line of the whole project :P I would have liked Mike to contribute generally but I'm totally indifferent when it comes to any of Tre's lyrics.

I'm not so much annoyed with the lyrics, as the lack of giving Mike or Tré more parts to sing. Not that their voices are necessarily great, but it's like, you gave fucking Lady Cobra half of a song, why not your own band members? You had 37 tracks to experiment on. AI had Homecoming, and although it's not necessarily one of my favorites, it was nice for each band member to have a part and to switch it up a bit. And that was just for one album. Not three.

That really annoyed me. I didn't see it as an act of solidarity, it was just fucking annoying and stupid.

Really? His bit in Homecoming is one of my favorite parts of American Idiot. It's not serious, but it's funny and it fit with the album and the song. Plus, Tre's "haha fuck you all I'm hilarious and don't give a shit" attitude would have fit in perfectly with the Trilogy.

This is really what I was getting at with my original post. The Trilogy was crying out for a bit of lightheartedness.

AGREED. Would have loved if their idea of being "experimental" was more collaboration amongst themselves for Homecoming-like songs and others.

Calling the Trilogy experimental is a bit of a joke anyway. 95% of it is the same stuff GD have being doing since 1989.

No. To me it just looked like "Oh, Billie's lost his shit, better join in so he doesn't look stupid by himself."

Rock n Roll Girlfriend is by far Tre's best song, but generally I don't really find him that funny. Like A Rat Does Cheese is hilarious, but the rest don't really do it for me. But yeah, I guess the Trilogy would have benefitted from being a bit less po-faced. Plus Tre can make being a creepy letch work, whereas Billie trying it is just uncomfortable.
