Spike Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 Yeah I agree they do not represent the album all that well. It is a tough album to have one song that represents the sound. Maybe the title track. And I'd prefer a song better than KYE is the one that gains fame off the album, but success is success. People that just outright hate green day usually hate them for awful reasons. It used to piss me off, now I just ignore it. Haha some bloggers/critics out there are genuinely idiotic. People that don't like them usually just go off their image. They don't listen to the lyrics, and they certainly don't listen to anything outside the singles, which we, as serious Green Day fans, know that is a great disservice. I'm tempted to throw a curveball and say they shouldn't have released any singles for it. And I mean it. It's not uncommon to not release singles when the album works so well as a unit - Led Zep, Pink Floyd and the Manics have all done it, to name but a few. That's the trouble with bloggers and critics. It's totally unregulated so people can spew whatever bile they want and readers will suck it up like the morons they are. The fact is most music reviewers wouldn't know how to review music if their life depended on it.

Rolling Stone in particular makes me batshit--the fact that they rated AI and Dos equally makes me want to vomit out of my eyesockets.
JOE THE X-KID Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 How dare they...I mean American idiot is good but it's no Dos

Z J Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 Rolling stone seem to really love Green Day, they aren't part of the problem to me
Anaïs. Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 Rolling stone seem to really love Green Day, they aren't part of the problem to me NME, on the other hand... Though I must admit it gives me pleasure that the pun is readymade. "Do you know the NME?" *rimshot*
Guest Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 NME, on the other hand... DO YOU KNOW YOUR NME, DO YOU KNOW YOUR NME, WELL GOTTA KNOW YOUR NME RAW HAM I'm so sorry.
AlissaGoesRAWR Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 I actually really like that, but at the same time the OCD part of me enjoys the symmetry of "Song of the Century" leading into those opening chords of 21CBD at the top of the album, and the echo of Song of the Century at the beginning of "American Eulogy," followed by those same opening chords in "See the Light" as the closing song on the album Also, I think that "See the Light" ends the album on a much more hopeful note than RHS would, and I just like my albums to end neatly and nicely What are your thoughts on Whatsername then? That's not exactly hopeful, but it's fucking brilliant.
Eva Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 What are your thoughts on Whatsername then? That's not exactly hopeful, but it's fucking brilliant. Personally, I've always felt that Whatsername feels a bit out of place. I mean, it's the last track on a great album, right after an amazing nine minute long song. Whatsername is one of my favorite Green Day songs, but yeah, I've always felt that the switch from Homecoming into Whatsername was a bit...weird, I guess. Then again, I think that also adds to the overall feeling of the album, and it definitely gives a good ending to the story line. So I don't know. I have conflicting feelings about that song. Yeah I agree they do not represent the album all that well. It is a tough album to have one song that represents the sound. Maybe the title track. And I'd prefer a song better than KYE is the one that gains fame off the album, but success is success. I've always thought 21 Guns is the most successful song off 21st Century Breakdown...It's the one song all my non-Green Day fan friends know, other than WMUWSE, of course. I think 21 Guns is a worse representation of 21CB than KYE, though. At least KYE shows that they can still play power chords and hit the snare drum, even if it is the exact same drum groove as Bikini Kill's Rebel Girl. Though I think I read somewhere that that was intentional, idk.

I agree in that the with the last minute of Homecoming, especially the last line, it seems illogical that there could be another "ending" to JoS's story. I think Static Age would have led off well from Holiday, and RHS or Before the Lobotomy still run circles around 21 Guns for me. Although I can't complain with its success. Although KYE did prove those things, it also never left the set list. Yes, its a good live song, but I'd rather have had Murder City be the one they call back to in future tours DO YOU KNOW YOUR NME, DO YOU KNOW YOUR NME, WELL GOTTA KNOW YOUR NME RAW HAM I'm so sorry. And ever since that day, Kerrang set out on a vendetta against NME of "Green Day cover prostitution syndrome" to spite them and get written into GD's next single
Anaïs. Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 I agree in that the with the last minute of Homecoming, especially the last line, it seems illogical that there could be another "ending" to JoS's story. I don't see "Whatsername" as an ending. "Homecoming" is the ending proper; "Whatsername" is a coda or epilogue. It's not needed for the narrative, but it does provide a sense of resolution that the album otherwise doesn't have. And let's face it, it's probably the most heartbreaking song Billie's ever written.
The Grouch is Tracy Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 Aww, c'mon... these two lines make me so happy: "I'm gonna drink, fight and fuck, and I'm pushing my luck all the time now" & "I'm a hater, a traitor in a pair of Chuck Taylors right now" I'm not kidding either. It's an irrational love. Me too!

Tre has Billie beat there, All By Myself is so heartbreaking. HES SO LONELY Good explanation.

It charted higher in the mainstream and got more mainstream radio play. But KYE charted much better on the rock and alt charts if I'm not mistaking
Spike Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 Whatsername is a perfect ending. The last section of Homecoming is fantastic, but were that the closer it'd leave me hanging, and Whatsername is just perfection in terms of stopping that from happening. Not only is it necessary, but I think it's one of the most hard hitting tracks they've ever written. It's like, you can get really caught up in all the shit that's going on in your life and it feels like your world is crashing down, then after you've weathered the storm you reflect on everything in a calm manner and mull over your regrets. And it's like "How the fuck did I get here? What happened? How in god's name am I still alive?" That just hits home so fucking hard, and it's the best ending imaginable. There's also the fact that Green Day are a live band at heart, so an album like that (and the same applies to 21st Century Breakdown) needs an encore, right?

Now you have me depressed that I'll never see this magical song live. Thanks a lot, Mr. Anyone.
HolyHandGrenade Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 Gosh, now I really want them to tour for A.I.'s tenth and finally play Homecoming live. I would pay sooo much for a full set plus non-album tracks.

AlissaGoesRAWR Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 I never got to see it either My former co-worker was at the Dayton, Ohio, show where they played AI front to back. Dick.
