WhiteTim Posted January 3, 2014 Posted January 3, 2014 I hope I didn't give that impression! I love Nimrod, it has some of their all time best songs on it. But the mix of styles and its length don't make for a coherent album, and as such I prefer to take it a couple of songs at a time rather than listen to it all the way through. This Nimrod. is a great collection of songs but it's not cohesive as an album Its my gripe with ¡Dos! has good songs but to me just random songs thrown together
HolyHandGrenade Posted January 3, 2014 Posted January 3, 2014 This Nimrod. is a great collection of songs but it's not cohesive as an album Its my gripe with ¡Dos! has good songs but to me just random songs thrown together Going off this point - I think Dos has some great tunes, but the fact that it has poor lyrics based on poor, cliched themes sours the album for me.I get the feeling Green Day is having a bit of an identity crisis, and have been since American Idiot. 21st Century Breakdown was essentially an attempt to recapture everything about American Idiot and Uno/Dos/Tre was essentially the band going "what the fuck do we do now? a little bit of everything?". For the next album I would like to see a stripped down 14 song record with songs in the vein of Letterbomb and Murder City. Really rockin, inspired material that grabs your attention. Despite the hate Warning gets at times, I find it their most liberating album, and a pleasure to listen to because of this. In my selfish fan opinion, I would love something like your description. Based on that, an American Idiot that sounds like Insomniac would blow my mind. That'd be a true punk opera for me, rather than AI and 21CB based on Green Day's heritage.what? horseshoes and handgrenades is badass! F.O.D/Platypus + Minority + St. Jimmy = Horseshoes and Handgrenades = awesome

PleasedToMeetMe Posted January 3, 2014 Posted January 3, 2014 Warning is badass. I loved the whole Warning/International Superhits! era.
UNICORN VOMIT Posted January 3, 2014 Posted January 3, 2014 This Nimrod. is a great collection of songs but it's not cohesive as an album Its my gripe with ¡Dos! has good songs but to me just random songs thrown together I believe dos is suppose to sound like that - it's an album about being out of control.
Mar Posted January 3, 2014 Posted January 3, 2014 I believe dos is suppose to sound like that - it's an album about being out of control. And yet it has the most cohesive narrative of the Trilogy.
Jax Teller Posted January 3, 2014 Posted January 3, 2014 Horseshoes & Hand Grenades = This. All this. I love Warning, I've never understood why it's generally disliked. Top 5, easily. Do you think that the riff of the "Main Offender" is original? Listen to The Sonics and tell me.
HolyHandGrenade Posted January 3, 2014 Posted January 3, 2014 Do you think that the riff of the "Main Offender" is original? Listen to The Sonics and tell me. Either way, neither band cares; The Hives have opened for Green Day (post H+H)
Z J Posted January 3, 2014 Posted January 3, 2014 Warning is possibly top 3 for me depending on my mood, there are hardly any stinkers. I would probably consider Jackass and Waiting toward the bottom of best songs on that album and I still think they have some very good things about them. I think Macy's Day Parade, Castaway, and Church On Sunday are potentially the strongest top 3 of any album outside of American Idiot for me (and not necessarily in that order). Minority is a great live staple and I think the verses are very underrated. I love his vocal on most of that album, although I've heard people complain. To me, Waiting is the only one where the vocal is lame. Blood Sex and Booze is an example of how they could have done dos, but instead we get Makeout Party. I think the album is easy to listen to front to back. It is wonderfully melodic, while maintaining good lyrics and expanding on their sound a bit.
ddany Posted January 3, 2014 Posted January 3, 2014 Minority is a great live staple and I think the verses are very underrated. my favorit part of that song is: "blinded by the silence of a thousand broken hearts." Anyway, I agree that Warning is just badass, i love it.(easy to digest, oh) And you did not mention "Hold on", meaningful, good one. It's a shame that they don't really play songs from this album except Minority, and sometimes Waiting. And about Misery, i think it's just fine. tells a great story
munns6691 Posted January 3, 2014 Posted January 3, 2014 You can take any one band and search the history of music and find a song that got "ripped off" by them. People don't understand there is only so many sounds to make with billions of bands over the past like 5000 years.

Musically the verses are fantastic, and the lyrics are among the best Billie has ever written. I actually think the choruses are the worst bits of the song, and that's saying something. People don't understand there is only so many sounds to make with billions of bands over the past like 5000 years. I see where you're coming from, but rock music as we know it has only existed since the late 50s. Bands being unoriginal at this stage is purely down to a lack of imagination. Not that it even matters - to me, if a song is good that's all that matters, whether it's a ripoff or not.

It works so well on its own, but throw it on top of the music, especially Mike's bassline, and it's mindblowing. It's a shame it's overplayed really, it's easy to get bored of it sometimes despite how good it is. Not helped by the fact that 60,000 people singing "I wanna be the minority" is kind of ridiculous, of course
WhiteTim Posted January 3, 2014 Posted January 3, 2014 Speaking of Minority... Just saw a youtube clip of a girl showing off money that she robbed from a bank and bragging about it had Minority playing in the background lol

It's great in the way that it's easy to listen to without too many things that are in your face musically, but it also has really great themes that you can find if you do decide to listen to it closer. It's a great collection of songs on all ends of the spectrum, because you have songs like Jackass and Deadbeat Holiday that are more on the loathing side of things, Waiting that seems hopeful of sorts, Minorty, which... well, no explanation needed there, and so on. The only thing I disagree with is your stance on Jackass, cause personally that's one of my favourites ("To know you is to hate you, so loving you must be like suicide" - brilliant line imo). And dat sax solo. Ironically, the weakest song on the entire album is probably "Warning."
Spoopy Doo Posted January 3, 2014 Posted January 3, 2014 I frequently forget about Warning. I'm a terrible fan.
The Disappearing Boy Posted January 4, 2014 Posted January 4, 2014 I frequently forget about Warning. I'm a terrible fan. So do I. Both the song and the album, which is a shame.
HolyHandGrenade Posted January 4, 2014 Posted January 4, 2014 Fashion Victim's rhythm is sooooo catchy
JOE THE X-KID Posted January 4, 2014 Posted January 4, 2014 YES. sorry dear Gotta agree with this. They need to refocus and produce something organic. I don't even particularly care what it sounds like, as long as it's well thought out, focused and has decent quality control. they should just purely make an album on what they want. I'm not saying the last two weren't, but I dunno they feel a little forced.

Still isn't it hard to come up with a brand new sound and still be under the rock genre? And possibly it's because the sound most often used is effective and popular, rather than bands being lazy. I also don't care if some other band has a similar sounding song.
