Spike Posted December 27, 2013 Posted December 27, 2013 What the fuck are you even talking about.About why Green Day failed in the jazz genre. Holiday could be interpreted as 6/8 as an alternative to tripleted 4/4 in the verses and bridge.
Spike Posted December 27, 2013 Posted December 27, 2013 My lack of musical knowledge is showing again That explains why you're a Green Day fan
Spike Posted December 27, 2013 Posted December 27, 2013 Oh SNAP! but seriously what's this 3/4 6/8 thing whatever it is you guys are talking about, educate me. The easiest way to explain it is that it's how the beat falls. Most Green Day songs are in 4/4, which means there are 4 beats a bar, and each beat is a crotchet. It's kind of difficult to explain. The crotchet is represented by a 4 because it's a quarter of a bar in 4/4, hence in America it's known as a quarter note. Basically if you count along it feels natural to count to 4. 6/8 and 3/4 are basically the same thing - three quarter notes in a bar, or six eighth notes in a bar (eighth notes are known as quavers by real people), and 6/8 tends to be faster. They just give different feels. If you want to try it, count along to the drum beat in BOBD, I've always found that best demonstrates the 4/4 time signature. And if that made any sense you're already a musician, and a better one than me at that. Ceadog, help!
The Disappearing Boy Posted December 27, 2013 Posted December 27, 2013 As for grammar: 'there of which I stand alone' as for time signatures: some bars in before the lobotomy are in 7/8. Isn't that exciting?
Spike Posted December 27, 2013 Posted December 27, 2013 As for grammar: 'there of which I stand alone' as for time signatures: some bars in before the lobotomy are in 7/8. Isn't that exciting? It's 'thereof', which makes sense I forgot about Before The Lobotomy. Isn't that very prog rock of them? Watch out Rush.
The Disappearing Boy Posted December 27, 2013 Posted December 27, 2013 It's 'thereof', which makes sense I forgot about Before The Lobotomy. Isn't that very prog rock of them? Watch out Rush. How does it make sense? Grammatically speaking, I mean. Surely you stand alone from something?
Spike Posted December 27, 2013 Posted December 27, 2013 How does it make sense? Grammatically speaking, I mean. Surely you stand alone from something? In the full context of "one nation under dog thereof which I stand alone" you can get away with using thereof in place of from. It is kind of hammy and clunky, but in context it's allowable. Which is kind of annoying when it's clearly only there to make the line scan properly.
Guest Posted December 27, 2013 Posted December 27, 2013 Ceadog, help! Don't look at me, you're the music graduate! You go help the musically retarded
Spike Posted December 27, 2013 Posted December 27, 2013 Don't look at me, you're the music graduate! You go help the musically retarded But I got through it on sex appeal alone.
Guest Posted December 27, 2013 Posted December 27, 2013 Sounds like you and I have a lot in common. So wait, someone tell me what the deal is with Give Me Novacaine and the wibbly wobbly time wimey stuff on it. There is literally no timey wimey stuff on GMN. It's standard boring Green Day time.
Spike Posted December 27, 2013 Posted December 27, 2013 Sounds like you and I have a lot in common. So wait, someone tell me what the deal is with Give Me Novacaine and the wibbly wobbly time wimey stuff on it.I don't think there is wibbly wobbly time wimey stuff in Give Me Novacaine. It's a relatively complicated beat for 4/4 though. One of Tre's best performances I reckon, and that's probably an unpopular opinion. There is literally no timey wimey stuff on GMN. It's standard boring Green Day time. Baby baby it's common time. Or something.
Spike Posted December 27, 2013 Posted December 27, 2013 Well this has all been very enlightening. Short answer: annoyingly geeky musician shit that sucks the fun out of everything.
Guest Posted December 27, 2013 Posted December 27, 2013 This is exactly why I fucking hated doing music exams.
Spike Posted December 27, 2013 Posted December 27, 2013 This is exactly why I took my AS level written music exam 3 times, getting a D, then an E then another D. My degree involved no theory whatsoever and I was taught by the drummer from Goldfrapp and the winner of 2008's Finnish Pop Idol. Fuck yeah.
HolyHandGrenade Posted December 27, 2013 Posted December 27, 2013 Don't look at me, you're the music graduate! You go help the musically retarded But you're the resident Biffy lord of GDC - and boy do they mess with time signatures (relative to GD at least)
munns6691 Posted December 28, 2013 Posted December 28, 2013 1. Green Day doesn't sound boring to me at all, their sound comes together perfectly which is why I like them so much. 2. Couldn't care less about the 1/4 2/5 4/4 banana/potato thing. It sounds good thats what matters. 3. Unpoplar opinion: I like Green Day

Guest Posted December 28, 2013 Posted December 28, 2013 But you're the resident Biffy lord of GDC - and boy do they mess with time signatures (relative to GD at least) Yeah but their time changes are so good you don't even notice. I think they have a grand total of 5 songs that actually stay in 4/4 for the entire song, and all of those are folky songs
Spike Posted December 28, 2013 Posted December 28, 2013 Yeah but their time changes are so good you don't even notice. I think that's a good point. Subtlety is key - hardly something Green Day are known for. It wouldn't work

JOE THE X-KID Posted December 28, 2013 Posted December 28, 2013 I love the simplicity of Green Days stuff and yes I'm a big Biffy fan
Spike Posted December 28, 2013 Posted December 28, 2013 I always find it amusing how people complain about Green Day's simplicity then claim to love Panic Song WHICH IS ONE GODDAMN NOTE FOR TWO WHOLE MINUTES OF A THREE AND A HALF MINUTE SONG!
