HolyHandGrenade Posted December 23, 2013 Posted December 23, 2013 And the Trilogy tour! The cut back dramatically on special effects and general production costs this tour. For example - no more pyro
Hermione Posted December 23, 2013 Posted December 23, 2013 Welcome To Paradise is about living on their own for the first time as teenagers, in a warehouse full of punks. The place where they were at in their lives at that point, being young and inexperienced with just enough money to live by the most basic of standards in squats and warehouses and being part of the punk scene and travelling around in a van on tour for the first time, was probably pretty different to a few years later when they were older, used to living away from home, and had a very promising record contract. They lived in that basement apartment when they were making Dookie, even that is a big difference from a squat and they were getting married and having kids a year later so I imagine they'd changed a lot mentally since the Kerplunk days as well.
JOE THE X-KID Posted December 24, 2013 Posted December 24, 2013 I'm sorry but I never fucking get bored of Welcome to paradise haha
Spoopy Doo Posted December 24, 2013 Posted December 24, 2013 I wonder why they didn't go with re-recording another older song rather than Welcome to Paradise. I think songs like Private Ale, 80, One of My Lies, The Judge's Daughter, or Paper Lanterns would work just as well on there.
Z J Posted December 24, 2013 Posted December 24, 2013 Finally, I have justification for my abhorrence of that song I wouldn't say it's a terrible song, but it is definitely overplayed. That can be especially irritating for drummers, because they're kinda stuck playing the same thing over and over. That said, it seems Tré has gotten over that, because his recent drums have been incredibly repetitive. It is definitely overplayed. I don't really think it stands out much on Dookie. To me it is a good song, but it is expendable live for sure. It just isn't necessary. Especially if a band member hates it. It wasn't like it was their biggest hit (probably 4th most popular on the album). I like Tre's drum fills in it, so I'm kind of surprised THAT is the song he doesn't like. The lyrics are very good. The bass is amazing especially toward the end of the song. I think I am starting to prefer the Kerplunk version just because I've grown bored of the Dookie one. Although it was the song that got me back in to Green Day last year (couldn't tell you how or why) I'm sure there are other songs they don't like, they probably keep them off of the setlist though. I wonder why they didn't go with re-recording another older song rather than Welcome to Paradise. I think songs like Private Ale, 80, One of My Lies, The Judge's Daughter, or Paper Lanterns would work just as well on there. It was one of the most radio friendly songs on Kerplunk and it was popular amongst the underground

Probably because it didn't fit too well.

bagelfeet Posted December 24, 2013 Posted December 24, 2013 Probably because the newer version sucks. I disagree
AlissaGoesRAWR Posted December 24, 2013 Posted December 24, 2013 She's A Rebel suffers for being on such a strong album. On any other Green Day album it'd probably seem a lot better. It's definitely one of the two weakest on American Idiot. The other one is Extraordinary Girl. It's not bad, just doesn't stand up against the rest of the album. Oddly enough, these two songs were my favorites when I first heard AI in full. I thought She's a Rebel was so fun and fast, and I really liked the lyrics of Extraordinary Girl because I was trying to be an angsty 13-year-old and all that shit. As years go by, She's a Rebel is still one of my favorites. I know it gets a lot of hate, but I think, like you say, it's just from being on such a strong album. It's really not that bad of a song. It's just a newer version of some of their older, quick stuff, kind of like a blend of old and new. Extraordinarily Girl's verses seem so weak to me now, music-wise. I dunno, it just doesn't appeal to me as much anymore.

Do you mean just with how the instraments sound? Cause I think the lyrics are solid and the chorus is great both lyrically and musically
Mar Posted December 24, 2013 Posted December 24, 2013 Troublemaker is like biggest piece of shit they've ever made, Makeout Parties not far behind. And Dirty Rotten Bastards...well it sure as fuck ain't Jesus of Suburbia or Homecoming, it's like a hollow shell of what those songs are. Goddammit do I dislike Troublemaker and Makeout Party they're just fucking obnoxious, Troublemaker for the lyrics and MP for the guitar-playing, which just grates me. i prefer neither version of welcome to paradise because it's one of my least favorite gd songs ever Amen. WTP and WICA just don't do anything for me (although WICA is fun live when you're at a show; otherwise I only listen to it if I hear it on the radio. Can't say the same for WTP, I just truly dislike it). I like the arrangement of EG and Before the Lobotomy they did for the musical. Hate me Is that unpopular? Because I think the musical BTL is fucking beautiful and while I like the original, the musical EG adds so much power and emotion to it, which, again, I say this as a fan of the song, wasn't as strong as it could have been on the original version.
Anaïs. Posted December 24, 2013 Posted December 24, 2013 I don't understand why "When I Come Around" was the band's biggest hit until BOBD. It's not bad by any means, but "Basket Case" is far more memorable, and the song from that era that everyone remembers them for. I forget who, but some website recently ranked WICA as their best song, which just left me scratching my head.

I forget who, but some website recently ranked WICA as their best song, which just left me scratching my head. On balance I don't think it was. It might have got higher chart positions than other Dookie singles in a couple of countries, but Basket Case charted at 6 in the UK and WICA 27. Regardless of sales at the time, in the long run Basket Case and Good Riddance were far more successful and stuck in the general public's minds. The only reason WICA will have sold more than Basket Case in some countries was because Basket Case came along and made a lot of people aware of Green Day, then they'll have gone out and bought the next single in order to check them out more. It's one of the rare cases where a follow up sold better than a breakthrough single. Although personally I think When I Come Around is the best song on Dookie by a long, long way. It's top 3 overall for me, no question. It's weird, I always kind of forget about it, then every time I've seen them do it live I've absolutely freaked out at the opening chords.

I forget who, but some website recently ranked WICA as their best song, which just left me scratching my head. It's far and away the most fequently played song from Dookie on the radio here in the states. It is the most well known in my area too, from Dookie. I don't think it is their best song but I do think it is the best on the album, maybe tied with She. Basket Case, for some reason, doesn't get as much attention anymore. I think When I Come Around's guitar riff is by far the best Green Day has. Live it USED to be incredible, when everyone jumped up and down with the guitar. Nowadays it is still very good, but the crowd doesn't get as in to it physically, although everyone sings it very loud. I think melodically, musically, and lyrically it is just more accessible than Basket Case (although I think Basket Case is great too)

Spike Posted December 27, 2013 Posted December 27, 2013 Is it bad that seeing the guys make spelling and grammatical errors on Instagram is enough to make me think twice about listening to them?
Mar Posted December 27, 2013 Posted December 27, 2013 Is it bad that seeing the guys make spelling and grammatical errors on Instagram is enough to make me think twice about listening to them? As a copy editor, I completely agree, friend I think Basket Case is more memorable and quintessential Green Day, but as said above, WICA is more accessible and doesn't stand out as much. I hear it all the time on our Hot AC and AC radio stations and I think that's because it's a song that you can play at work, in the car or in a waiting room and it won't really cause a stir because it's inoffensive enough (and of course, it's the same reason Good Riddance has such longevity on the same types of stations).
Antonium2200 Posted December 27, 2013 Posted December 27, 2013 I think Mike Dirnt and Billie Joe should've gotten married.
AlissaGoesRAWR Posted December 27, 2013 Posted December 27, 2013 Is it bad that seeing the guys make spelling and grammatical errors on Instagram is enough to make me think twice about listening to them? Not at all. Billie's damn near illiterate, and it makes me cringe.
AlissaGoesRAWR Posted December 27, 2013 Posted December 27, 2013 Which makes you wonder..... So, about those lyrics, Billie! Oh, he has to have a very good proofreader! Look at some of his setlists! He can't even spell the titles right. "Hitchen a Ride" comes to mind.
Spike Posted December 27, 2013 Posted December 27, 2013 Come on guys, to be fair without Billie's difficulty to grasp the English language we wouldn't have such coherent lyrics as "I'm not getting any younger as long as you don't get any older."
Guest Posted December 27, 2013 Posted December 27, 2013 Judging by his innovative ignorance of basically every time signature ever, I'm pretty sure he's a secret drummer and can't count past 4 either
Spike Posted December 27, 2013 Posted December 27, 2013 Judging by his innovative ignorance of basically every time signature ever, I'm pretty sure he's a secret drummer and can't count past 4 either Nobody Likes You is in 3/4. Which clearly excuses every other song they've ever written. Or maybe Mike can't write lyrics that scan in 4/4.

Brutal Love is 3/4 too, and I think there's another one that I'm forgetting. Still a pretty poor showing.
