Spike Posted December 23, 2013 Posted December 23, 2013 Redundant, Scattered and Uptight are all in my top 10. Nimrod has loads of fantastic songs on it, its downfall is that the range of styles on there make for a cluterfuck of an album. When you compare it to something as focused as American Idiot it seems like an absolute joke. But a lot of the songs in isolation are easily amongst their best. Hitchin' A Ride, The Grouch, Redundant, Scattered, Uptight, Haushinka and Prosthetic Head are absolutely solid. Nice Guys Finish Last doesn't really appeal but I can understand why it's liked. All The Time, Worry Rock, Jinx, Walking Alone and Reject are pretty good, as is Good Riddance. The only kinks in the armour are Platypus, Last Ride In, Take Back and King For A Day, partly because there's no damn way those songs should be on the same album.
munns6691 Posted December 23, 2013 Posted December 23, 2013 My favorite songs from Nimrod are Worry Rock, Nice Guys Finish Last, Scattered, Walking Alone, The Grouch, Uptight, All The Time and Good Riddance. This may be unpopular in itself

This is partly due to the number of songs. If they cut down and included Suffocate, it would be much more definitive: 1. NGFL 2. Hitchin a Ride 3. The Grouch 4. Redundant 5. Scattered 6. All the Time 7. Worry Rock 8. Suffocate 9. Uptight 10. Jinx 11. Haushinka 12. Reject 13. Prosthetic Head
Z J Posted December 23, 2013 Posted December 23, 2013 That section in Nimrod from All The Time to King For A Day is just not full of much impactful work, for me. I like Reject, Uptight, and King For A Day but there isn't another album that I rank above Nimrod that has that kind of section. That said I think it is above 39Smooth, and the trilogy. It is a good album and I think it is very creative, and interesting. But while the songs are solid, they don't surpass their other work for me. Also I think I'm influenced by how shitty (shitty relative to the rest of their live tours) they were live during this era. Most of the songs don't get any help live, whereas on say 21CB the songs are so great live, which gives me a different way to appreciate the album, I think. If Suffocate and Desensitized are on there instead of Take Back and say Worry Rock.....then this album immediately jumps Dookie and Kerplunk for me. I would be interested to see the band take a more Ska-Punk approach. King For A Day is good. I really like that sound and while idk if it would work or not, I would be interested in hearing a few songs with that Sublime or Less Than Jake style sound.
Jollyroger118 Posted December 23, 2013 Posted December 23, 2013 I actually think the trilogy songs sound a 100% better live than on the albums, even better than 21st and such. However there's no way the trilogy would outweigh anything else in Green Days catalogue, except maybe the network lol but seriously the trilogies so weak and lacking in almost every way that it's hard to compare to even a 1039 which had kind of corny lyrics and stuff but it was passionate and it's just cool to hear a young Billie's thoughts. The trilogy is just weird the whole direction of it and the fact that it's so lackluster. But even so I can't help listening to it all the time and Dos would probably be my favorite, to me it's definitely the most consistent and get's it point across but songs like Makeout Party and Fuck Time and of course Nightlife throw a monkey wrench in the whole thing. I've always loved Warning (as with all of their stuff) but lately I've been really appreciating it again, it's a fantastic album. Nimrod is a little all over the place but has some of the best he's ever written and it's a really good example of what makes Green Day so great. Just great bare boned songs with honest lyrics. Insomniac will always be one of my favorites cause I'm a miserable fuck. Dookie is not overrated, I love it, it almost like a concept album with how tight and on point and consistent it is. Kerplunk is much the same and I would give anything for a better quality version of it but even with the way it is it's still really good. And a 1039 has a special place in my heart, brings me right back to being 13 and in love and happy. And Going to Pasalaqua is still one of their best songs and I think one of their personal favorites. But American Idiot trumps everything in my opinion that album is "maximum Green Day". 21st has some bad songs like Know Your Enemy or 21 Guns but they aren't unlistenable like many off the trilogy. And though it's not quite as powerful or on point as AI it's still incredible music, especially compared to pretty much any other rock band around that time and now. Troublemaker is like biggest piece of shit they've ever made, Makeout Parties not far behind. And Dirty Rotten Bastards...well it sure as fuck ain't Jesus of Suburbia or Homecoming, it's like a hollow shell of what those songs are. But they are really one of the only bands I know who have always put out great music, without straying too far from what they love, yet constantly pushing themselves forward and always making sure it's quality and true. Except the trilogy but I'm more than capable of forgiving it cause they've been amazing for twenty years and even though the trilogy songs are not up to Green Day standards they're still pretty good. I love The Strokes, but after their second album it's like he lost his way. Their third was okay, half hit half miss but after that it's like he lost it. Now he sings in this high weird voice with shitty lyrics. Same goes for Matchbox Twenty (one of my other favorites) where their first two are incredible, the third was okay and their newest sucks. And Paramore who's first two albums were really good, third was incredible and the last is hit and miss and kind of weird. But Green Day...always the best they can be up until the trilogy and I can't see that this is the end. I have a feeling they're next album, whenever it may be is gonna be something special and I don't know a return to form I guess.

Z J Posted December 23, 2013 Posted December 23, 2013 WHATS WRONG WITH WORRY ROCK?! Just not very entertaining to me musically/melodically. Lyrics are creative but they don't have a theme or message I particularly connect with I suppose
Spike Posted December 23, 2013 Posted December 23, 2013 I must admit I prefer Weezer's version of Worry Rock!

The Disappearing Boy Posted December 23, 2013 Posted December 23, 2013 You all make me feel old with your insane post counts and the fact I'm older than the lot of you. Hahahahahahhahahahahahahahahhahahahahaaha Older, higher post count and older join date. I beat both of you.
The Disappearing Boy Posted December 23, 2013 Posted December 23, 2013 but i have a higher post count and older join date than you so 2 out of 3 i win ^_^ You do, well done We've still got more rep than you though Score update: The Disappearing Boy - 3 Lady Nightlife - 1 Not Anyone - 1
The Grouch is Tracy Posted December 23, 2013 Posted December 23, 2013 23? I think I vaguely remember those days.......
The Disappearing Boy Posted December 23, 2013 Posted December 23, 2013 Wait, you and I are both 23. Ah but age is nothing, likes post count and join date are of much greater importance. It's just the rule of the internet.
Spike Posted December 23, 2013 Posted December 23, 2013 Unpopular GDC opinions: Hermione thinks we should get back on topic. But seriously. Does anyone else prefer the Kerpunk version of Welcome To Paradise? It's one of those songs that's better for being more raw, and Mike's bass on it is even more insane.
The Disappearing Boy Posted December 23, 2013 Posted December 23, 2013 I haven't heard the Kerplunk version in years coz I never used to like it. I'll have to give it another listen.
Guest Posted December 23, 2013 Posted December 23, 2013 Wait, people actually listen to WTP out of choice?

Spike Posted December 23, 2013 Posted December 23, 2013 Wait, people actually listen to WTP out of choice? Only when I'm jamming it on bass. I got so sick of it around this time last year though, we were doing it in my band and we rehearsed it 5 times a day for a fortnight. After that I never wanted to hear the damn thing again.
HeroesandCons86 Posted December 23, 2013 Posted December 23, 2013 I can't stand Wild One. Worst Green Day song. And She's A Rebel. I don't think theres a single bad song on iTre!, however its still not as good as AI or 21CB Lady Cobra or Stop When The Red Lights Flash should have been the single off Dos

I don't think theres a single bad song on iTre!, however its still not as good as AI or 21CB I don't think the Wild One hate is unpopular! Dreadful song. She's A Rebel suffers for being on such a strong album. On any other Green Day album it'd probably seem a lot better. It's definitely one of the two weakest on American Idiot.
HeroesandCons86 Posted December 23, 2013 Posted December 23, 2013 They should use a backdrop on tour more often, like the Dookie one at Reading I don't think the Wild One hate is unpopular! What's the other weak AI song?

Or the skyline backdrop on the 21CB tour! The other one is Extraordinary Girl. It's not bad, just doesn't stand up against the rest of the album.

One of Tré's better drum performances from the latter end of their career, plus it doesn't rely on being part of the story arc of AI to make it strong, like Are We The Waiting.

I think that might be what's off putting to me, it feels out of place on the album. The drumming is fantastic, I'd rank it just behind Give Me Novocaine as the best on the album.
