Z J Posted December 13, 2013 Posted December 13, 2013 To heck? I copy pasted from a lyrics site, didn't catch that
HolyHandGrenade Posted December 13, 2013 Posted December 13, 2013 This is an important point - Trilogy albums aside, Green Day don't do good songs, they do good albums. You could remove the singles from any if their albums and still be left with some insanely strong EPs. I mean, how mindblowingly good are a band when songs like Letterbomb, Whatsername, Homecoming and Give Me Novacaine aren't considered strong enough songs to be released as singles? It's just incredible beyond words. I find it a crime against humanity that GD has abandoned Homecoming completely for live set lists in favor of JoS. That's an unpopular opinion if I do say so myself Would it be unpopular to say that my favorite on Insomniac is Panic Song?
UNICORN VOMIT Posted December 13, 2013 Posted December 13, 2013 I find it a crime against humanity that GD has abandoned Homecoming completely for live set lists in favor of JoS. Would it be unpopular to say that my favorite on Insomniac is Panic Song? I would actually cry if I saw homecoming live & that is not a fangirl comment. & Panic song - I would love to be the opening song. So no not unpopular with me.
Spike Posted December 13, 2013 Posted December 13, 2013 I need to see Homecoming and Whatsername live sometime before I die. Unfortunately it's looking increasingly unlikely. Jesus of Suburbia is amazing, and it's great live but it's kind of wearing thin now. They've done the whole thing of getting a fan on stage to play it on guitar, they've added a stop to give it an energy boost, they've played it to death, there's not really anywhere else to take it. They should at least do Homecoming instead maybe a third of the time.
stories and songs Posted December 13, 2013 Posted December 13, 2013 I've certainly had my ups and downs with Green Day over the years, but no band has ever even come close to replacing them. I've never been on a forum for another band. I love and consistently listen to a ton of bands, but I know very little about the band members. There's really just no comparison between Green Day and the other bands I listen to. When I get away from Green Day, I don't have a "replacement band," I listen to a bunch of stuff, really. Green Day is the only band I've ever absolutely adored on all levels, though. That said, I think my brain (and I think this is the same for a lot of people) is only capable of one full obsession at a time. And that can be anything - a movie, a show, etc. I may love and be a fan of many things, but only one thing has my full attention at a time. Unpopular opinion: I'm glad Green Day is going on hiatus. There was a whole lot I didn't like about this era, and I think the sooner we move on to something else, the better. I've been taking a break of my own from them, but an official hiatus is good. A few good songs came out of this time, but I'm thrilled to move past this era.

It gives us fans a chance to refresh, move on from the failed Trilogy era and start again when they come back. It's easily the best thing they could have done, for their own sakes and for the fans.

Although initially I was convinced there would be a fall U.S. tour and I'd die if it didn't happen, I've moved on and realized whatever's coming next will be much better than some half-assed attempt to pretend the trilogy didn't fail miserably.
Spike Posted December 13, 2013 Posted December 13, 2013 If I ever saw Whatsername live, I think my brain would literally explode. In that case I hope they never do it because that could get very messy for those around you.

Maybe why they decided on calling the tour 99 Rev instead of UNO, dos, tre. Although billie did really well at the start of the US tour - they played it pretty safe with the setlist in my opinion - which is understandable. I am fairly certain they had more planned definitely Australia was now but they bumped everything. For me I am glad they are having a break but I have tour dates.
Mar Posted December 13, 2013 Posted December 13, 2013 The Gaslight Anthem. That is all. Praise your light. I find it a crime against humanity that GD has abandoned Homecoming completely for live set lists in favor of JoS. Would it be unpopular to say that my favorite on Insomniac is Panic Song? I mostly dislike/don't care for long instrumentals or solos, but the instrumental in Panic Song is amazing and fitting.

Spoopy Doo Posted December 13, 2013 Posted December 13, 2013 That's an unpopular opinion if I do say so myself I don't hate it by any means; it's great. I usually skip it when I listen to the album though.

Like for years and years and years they're gone. They're taking a break. Like they do every year. They took a break between American Idiot and 21st Century Breakdown. A break that was probably a hell of a lot longer than they'll ever have again. Like for example Rush took a break when Neil Pearts daughter died. It wasn't a hiatus though, as far as anyone is concerned they've been active for 45 years. No stopping.
walking_c0ntradicti0n Posted December 13, 2013 Posted December 13, 2013 ok, idk the popularity level of this, but i think i prefer uptight over platypus on nimrod
Spike Posted December 14, 2013 Posted December 14, 2013 ok, idk the popularity level of this, but i think i prefer uptight over platypus on nimrod Uptight is one of the best songs they've ever done. Platypus just... isn't.
Anaïs. Posted December 14, 2013 Posted December 14, 2013 I really wish the studio version of "East Jesus Nowhere" had done what Billie occasionally did live and had him count off in German. The Nazi imagery isn't exactly subtle, but 1. The rest of the song isn't either, which is what makes it awesome. 2. It just sounds so cool! I can see why they did it the way they did on the record, though--the backmasked "Don't test me" is so quiet that it makes the drums, when they come in, pound that much harder. Uptight is one of the best songs they've ever done. Platypus just... isn't. I'm really curious to hear your reasoning as to the former.
Spike Posted December 14, 2013 Posted December 14, 2013 I'm really curious to hear your reasoning as to the former. A few reasons, really. 1) Innovative structure. It might end very repetitively but I think it works in the context of the song, and it's a great move away from the verse chorus verse chorus bridge double chorus recipe. 2) Lyrics. I just love them. 3) The energy distribution. I love how it builds the tension for like three verses before letting rip for the rest of the song. In that respect it's their second best moment, behind the massive buildup into the guitar solo of Restless Heart Syndrome, which about wipes the floor with anything else they've ever done in itself. 4) It's a blatant Stevie Wonder ripoff, therefore it's perfect. So yeah. It's very simple, but there's a lot more to it than meets the eye.

Sorry - I didn't mean to imply that they're taking anything more than a bit of a break between albums. When I said "hiatus" I was thinking of television shows going on a summer hiatus before the start of a new season. I don't think this is more than their typical break, nor do I want it to be.
Spike Posted December 14, 2013 Posted December 14, 2013 "Hiatus: a break, or vacation for a company or organization to reorganize or revamp." The word does get used when referring to bands who intend to take a long time off, but if we go by the actual definition it's exactly what Green Day are doing now.
The Disappearing Boy Posted December 14, 2013 Posted December 14, 2013 Uptight is one of the best songs they've ever done. Platypus just... isn't. Replace Uptight with Lazy Bones and you're there
olstjimmy Posted December 14, 2013 Posted December 14, 2013 I don't think it's unpopular that they've decided to go on a break. I think they need a serious recharge. And maybe even some time away from each other, cos if I see one friend everyday for too long I start to get sick of their company I don't think the 'Trilogy' era was an utter failure like people are making it out to be. It had a LOT OF PROBLEMS... But some good songs still came of it and even though a bit repetitive, the shows are saw were utterly amazing.
Z J Posted December 14, 2013 Posted December 14, 2013 The live shows during the 99 Revolutions tour were good but I think they struggled when they got to the festivals (Except for Reading). I think the 21CB tour, AI tour, Insomniac, and Dookie tours were all better, IMO
Mar Posted December 15, 2013 Posted December 15, 2013 ok, idk the popularity level of this, but i think i prefer uptight over platypus on nimrod Platypus is is good for listening to when you're pissed off but that is it. Otherwise it's fucking obnoxious to me.
Spike Posted December 16, 2013 Posted December 16, 2013 Platypus is is good for listening to when you're pissed off but that is it. Otherwise it's fucking obnoxious to me. It just seems kind of cheap, too. It's literally "I'm really angry, let's put music to it." Compare it to the more angry songs on Insomniac, like Babs Uvula Who? and it just seems forced. How Platypus made it onto Nimrod and Desensitized didn't is beyond me, the latter is clearly far superior yet in the same vein.
