Christian's Inferno is very weak lyrically, but musically I very much enjoy it.

Used to think that Billie was singing "Woah, big shits in fairyworld" on the chorus of Christian's inferno. Made the song much more entertaining.

Really - I don't understand why so many following this thread don't like 21CB - it would be my most listened to album & before the lobotomy would be in my top 5 GD songs.

I get the feeling that sometimes, most of the album gets overlooked because of Know Your Enemy and 21 Guns. There's only two songs on the album I truly dislike; I even like Christian's Inferno; speaking of which, why does Christian's Inferno get so much hate?

Anyway, 21st Century Breakdown is definitely in my top five favorite albums.

Nope, has nothing to do with KYE or 21 Guns.

Basically, I view 21CB as an attempt, on the band's part, to follow up the success of AI with something "even more epic." But in being intentionally epic, it just comes across as (to me) a little bloated and overdone. I think it's much too long, there's songs on there I have no desire to listen to ever again (Christian's Inferno, See the Light) and I just find it really hard to get into thematically. I rarely (if ever) have a day where I'm like "Yeah, I'm gonna sit down and listen to 21CB in full today!" I find most of it difficult to relate to thematically and lyrically and it just doesn't do much for me. For me to enjoy music, there has to be an emotional part of it that I can relate to. And it's just missing for me in that CD.

There are songs I thoroughly enjoy on their own (Peacemaker, Murder City, The Static Age, Horseshoes and Handgrenades) and I don't think all of it is shit. But it probably is my least favorite album, and that's OK. We're allowed to dislike albums.

I think it also has to do with what album got you into the band. I'm a product of the AI era, so I have emotional attachment to that album. So I think I was naturally inclined to be more critical of it's follow-up anyway.

The "I just wanna bum a cig" line is what turns me off the most with Murder City. Its just such a weak line in the spot where arguably the most powerful line in the sound should be

What, to you, makes this a weak line?

I really think, as someone said previously, the concept of being forced to listen to a friend bitch about their problems when you really don't care and just want to do something else (something as simple as have a smoke) is a concept many people can relate to.

Welp, won't be able to unhear that now.

This would single-handedly transform it from my least favourite Green Day song, to my favourite Green Day song.

Yep, the results are in. The award for the greatest thing I've ever read goes to Ceadog....

I always heard "Woah, bitches in paradise."

 That just improved the song immeasurably for me.

That is true from an emotional point because although I am an older fan for one reason or another 21CB breakdown tour has been the only chance I have had to see them live - so it holds great memories but I don't find it too long & the rest idk I just love it :)

On a weaker album it might be more acceptable, but then again... maybe not.

Just add some tambourine and put it on the trilogy :D

Christian's Inferno . . the verses = "hey, The Network is back!" the chorus = "haha, just kidding. It's Green Day". I do think the sinister laugh makes the song though.

Yup, that totally makes sense then!

Unfortunately I never got to see them during the AI days. I begged my parents and they were really close to taking me, but at the last minute they backed out and said I wasn't old enough. Then during 21 CB seeing them just never worked out. Finally saw them for the first time in March! :)

Oh God, you're right.

YES, I love BTL so fucking much. It's so mournful yet powerful.

Personally I can't stand Christian's Inferno for a few reasons:

1) Complete lack of melody in the verses.

2) The melody in the choruses is pretty crap, and is just four straight repeats. Boring.

3) The vocal effects and Billie's delivery in the verses just make it sound like a failed attempt to be edgy and sound like the Dead Kennedys. Whether it's effective or not is up for debate, but it just seems so out of place on an album that has such Disneyfied songs as The Static Age.

4) It just seems very thrown together on an otherwise very well thought out album (Know Your Enemy aside)

5) It's just not very good and doesn't add anything to the album.

6) It feels so much less epic than songs like 21st Century Breakdown, American Eulogy, Peacemaker and Little Girl. It's just floundering in the middle of all these massive songs, and just gets shat all over as a result. On a weaker album it might be more acceptable, but then again... maybe not.

I don't like Christian's Inferno at all but "Disneyfied" is such a good way to describe The Static Age. I never got the hype about that song, because I didn't find it all that catchy (I don't hate it, but I often skip it just as much as I skip CI) and found it had a lot of empty buzzwords.

Christian's Inferno contains this

Your argument is invalid

Oh shit, shots fired! You're so correct

My mom always thought it was "three shits in paradise" too, until one day she looked at the liner notes

It's a good album to listen to from start to finish. It just doesn't have much replay value.

On the contrary, I think it's one of the few Green Day albums that really rewards listening all the way through many times. It's so layered that you're almost guaranteed to hear something new with each listen.

That's true, but I find it far too much of a drag to listen to all the way through. When it first came out I thought it was absolutely fantastic, but for me it wore thin within 6 months. I tend to notice a lot of hidden layers in music a lot quicker than some people, so it never really had much longevity. I barely listen to any of the album these days, and when I do it's just the title track, Last Night On Earth, Peacemaker, Little Girl and Restless Heart Syndrome. There are some good songs on there beyond them, but they just bore me now and, as I've said before, a lot of them just feel Disneyfied.

Maybe it's because I rarely listen to individual GD songs anymore, I just throw on an album when I'm driving. 21stCB is nice as an album, it feels like it should all be together, rather than just a random collection of songs as some of their other albums can sound like.

Fair point really, I find a lot of Green Day songs seem to work better in the context of the album. She's A Rebel and Oh Love spring to mind. Like I say though, personally I just find it a drag even though it does make some individual songs seem better.

The same image goes into my head and it makes me sad, because all that means is the term "this band saved my life" is super overused. Coming from a person who HONESTLY might not be alive if it weren't for Green Day, I hate hearing goth little fangirls saying "that band saved my life!" about every band. It sounds trendy, annoying, and cliche. And all of their stories are the same. But I honestly wouldn't be alive if it weren't for Green Day, I mean, I'm sane now but I was quite and unstable little child in 7th grade, who really loved a certain band ^-^

This is so true and it really is sad. Back when I felt that way it wasn't a thing, and the real stories were actually really beautiful and interesting (believe it or not). You can't tell them apart anymore though because it's just trendy now. Not cool.

Yeah the songs don't sound as good shuffled or singled out. Agreed.

ok the songs you do like are decent choices but (im gonna put up my flame shield now) whats so bad about See the Light exactly?

99 Revolutions annoys me. It could have been so much better. It's a decent rallying song, good verses, a catchy riff, but let down by such a lazy chorus, an an unimaginative bridge.

This sums it up perfectly. Where the entire album falls down is that it seems really forced. American Idiot may have been something of a change of direction and a lot more 'epic' than previous stuff, but it happened organically, and that's what sets it apart. One thing with Green Day is that it's always obvious when they really mean it and when something is forced. A lot of 21CB falls squarely into the latter category.

Plus it's basically 78 RPM by Stiff Little Fingers :P

I agree, its catchy… but damn do they have to repeat the chorus as many times as they did in that song??
