The Disappearing Boy Posted December 2, 2013 Posted December 2, 2013 I have to agree with this. She's A Rebel gives it a run for its money as my least favourite song on the album, but American Idiot is 100% attitude. In terms of the song itself there's not a lot going for it. The riff in the bridge is edited pretty badly so you can hear the joins at the end of every two bars, and that's really started grating recently. I wish Tre mixed it up more with the drum fills and Mike wasn't just playing root notes, too. The performance and production do make it decent, but the song itself doesn't do much for me. Also, as strong as most of the lyrics are, bits of it are a bit silly. Do you mean the octave solo? I'll have to listen out for that.
walking_c0ntradicti0n Posted December 2, 2013 Posted December 2, 2013 maybe when its dookiefied by daniel shatterhand but not much at the moment kill the dj is already good fuck y'all
The Disappearing Boy Posted December 2, 2013 Posted December 2, 2013 kill the dj is already good fuck y'all good, but could have been better, that's the problem.
Spike Posted December 2, 2013 Posted December 2, 2013 Do you mean the octave solo? I'll have to listen out for that. No, the main riff after the solo. There's an obvious cut at the end of every couple of bars, under the cymbal hits, that makes it an obvious copy and paste job.
Anaïs. Posted December 2, 2013 Posted December 2, 2013 No, the main riff after the solo. There's an obvious cut at the end of every couple of bars, under the cymbal hits, that makes it an obvious copy and paste job. Shit, now I won't ever be able to unhear that.
Spike Posted December 2, 2013 Posted December 2, 2013 Shit, now I won't ever be able to unhear that. Well I can't, why should I suffer alone?
Anaïs. Posted December 2, 2013 Posted December 2, 2013 Well I can't, why should I suffer alone? Better for one to suffer for the sake of the masses than for the masses to suffer for the sake of that one's sense of equality.
Spike Posted December 2, 2013 Posted December 2, 2013 Better for one to suffer for the sake of the masses than for the masses to suffer for the sake of that one's sense of equality. Meh, I'm a bitch like that

I'll have to listen out for that, but I often don't hear these things, so hopefully I won't suffer too. That's weird though, why wouldn't they just record it all the way through to the end of the verse?!

It happens more often than you'd think—for instance, the guitar solo in "We Will Rock You" is looped.

fromdecimateddreams Posted December 3, 2013 Posted December 3, 2013 What song are you talking about? American Idiot.
Z J Posted December 3, 2013 Posted December 3, 2013 I actually like American Idiot (song). Yes the attitude and context of the song woo's me. But the lyrics are nothing to scoff at. One of their finer lyrical works I think. Welcome to a new kind of tension. All across the alien nation. Is probably one of my favorite lines of the album or in their entire catalogue. This line off the lead single is what got everyone's attention. Every reviewer/critic seemed to point to this line as the one that stood out. It seemed to be quite impactful. I also like the way he sort of changes who he's speaking to in the song. Although that might be something that only I think is happening
Spike Posted December 3, 2013 Posted December 3, 2013 It happens more often than you'd think—for instance, the guitar solo in "We Will Rock You" is looped. Yeah, it's a very common thing. Usually it's just entire choruses in order to maintain total consistency, but sometimes specific sections on one instrument are used. I do find it strange in this example though. Maybe it's just to get the performance as tight as possible. It could even be intentional, but once you notice it it's really distracting. I actually like American Idiot (song). But how he switches it up to "idiot America" during the stop just feels so cheesy to me

But how he switches it up to "idiot America" during the stop just feels so cheesy to me It rolls well I thought after another great line "information age of hysteria" and I never even thought about the fact that he switched the title around I did like that he used similar phrasing to the "faggot america" line. Although I always saw the latter line as "Well maybe I'm the faggot, America" as if he was addressing America. Anyway the line is a wonderful tool live, Billie sings the verse with no instruments, let's the audience yell "idiot america" and then they roar in to the final chorus.

It does definitely roll off the tongue, it's a good rhyme scheme. I always thought the same about the faggot America line, it's kind of ambiguous which always annoyed me! Yeah that's true, it's a great moment live. I like how they're throwing a stop into Jesus Of Suburbia for the same reason, just before "land of make believe."
Guest Posted December 3, 2013 Posted December 3, 2013 Yeah, thank fuck I barely listen to Green Day anymore.
Spike Posted December 3, 2013 Posted December 3, 2013 I need to not read this thread anymore, I made the total mistake of reading through the discussion of the AI copy-paste job and now the song is fucking ruined. DAMN THIS THREAD. I'm sorry! I'm surprised it's taken anyone here 9 years to notice though, myself included

Guest Posted December 4, 2013 Posted December 4, 2013 Can someone please explain this to an idiot like me with no music knowledge whatsoever? Basically instead of playing the riff in studio for the full song they just recorded shorter bits of it and merged it. Very lazy

UNICORN VOMIT Posted December 4, 2013 Posted December 4, 2013 That sucks - but I only really like that song live so it doesn't bother me that much. I have no music knowledge whatsoever as well.
Spike Posted December 4, 2013 Posted December 4, 2013 I get that part, but how can you tell? It's not a natural sounding edit - you can hear the gaps for a split second, and when the guitar comes back in it's been edited to come back in a split second after the chord has already been hit. So the initial attack sound is missing. I've just taken the isolated guitar track to demonstrate what I mean - the first round of the riff, taken from the intro, is played in full, and as such sounds natural. The second round is from the bridge (the bit in question) and sounds like a sub-standard edit. You'll be able to tell the difference, it's a lot easier to hear without the drums and vocals covering it up. https://soundcloud.com/tomjohnstonemusic/american-edit/s-2eALQ
