Spike Posted November 20, 2013 Posted November 20, 2013 Green Day really need a trumpet/trombone player live. Things just aren't the same without Ronnie or Kurt. I always end up looking over at Jason Freese and feeling sorry for him Like he used to be a much bigger part of the live show and look like he was having a lot of fun, now it's like Billie glances over at him like "who's that guy and why is he here?" Feels.
The Disappearing Boy Posted November 20, 2013 Posted November 20, 2013 I always said that Kurt Lohmiller makes everything better.
Spike Posted November 20, 2013 Posted November 20, 2013 I always said that Kurt Lohmiller makes everything better. And now Billie's all like "Kurt who? I've got Jeff now, he's mah new bitch." The whore.
Guest Posted November 20, 2013 Posted November 20, 2013 Freese should be the fourth member of Green Day, not White, if only because sax would have improved Dos immeasurably.
Anaïs. Posted November 20, 2013 Posted November 20, 2013 I wish the sax solo from the live version of "The Static Age" would have made it onto the studio version.
Spike Posted November 20, 2013 Posted November 20, 2013 Freese should be the fourth member of Green Day, not White, if only because sax would have improved Dos immeasurably. It might have drowned the tambourine out, at least. But yeah. Green Day didn't need another official member to play a few power chords. A saxophonist wouldn't have been totally pointless. And at least Freese plays a lot of keyboard, it's not even like sax would have to be on every song. Even though it should be.

I know Jason is BJ's friend from way back, but it's not like he brings anything to the table that the endless array of backing guitarists/singers haven't. He's a pretty solid guitarist, but he's not exceptional in anyway. Adding a keyboardist/saxophonist would have added a whole new dimension to Green Day's sound, whereas Jason just kinda digs them deeper into their 4 chords and a solo routine.
Guest Posted November 20, 2013 Posted November 20, 2013 Is it just me or do all the hysterical, screaming fangirls in "Are We The Waiting" off of BIAB kill the entire song? Not just you.

There's no way Jason is a better guitarist than Billie, he's on a par at the very best. So it's just really pointless to have him in the studio too. I get that with the trilogy they were going for a live sounding album, but that failed miserably (even with the hey-oh in Stay The Night). Jason Freese is a very versatile musician and could bring a hell of a lot to the table.
Z J Posted November 20, 2013 Posted November 20, 2013 People on here really questioning Good Riddance as a closer?? Unreal. Another turning point, a fork stuck in the roadTime grabs you by the wrist, directs you where to goSo make the best of this test, and don't ask whyIt's not a question, but a lesson learned in time This is one of the best verses lyrically they have done. The chord progression has become instantly recognizable by anyone. Fan or not. The lyrics are classic. Sure, it gets overplayed. I've heard the song thousands of times I'm sure but I still don't allow that to cloud my judgment of it. For a closing song in an encore you want a song that is popular and where everyone knows the lyrics. Well this is their most popular song. And it is a PERFECT send off. Everyone is singing along with Billie alone on the stage. It is their most impactful song. I fucking love the guitar solo before the final chorus. Macy's Day Parade and Brutal Love are great, but nobody knows them compared to Good Riddance. Some fans may have tired of it but Good Riddance is a beast that 95% of fans in the building want to hear live, no other song is like that. Also American Idiot as a lead single HAD to happen. No better way to introduce the re-birth of Green Day then with a huge middle finger to half of America.

Spike Posted November 20, 2013 Posted November 20, 2013 I'd argue that Jason is a better technical guitarist than Billie... Interesting theory. Based on what?
Guest Posted November 20, 2013 Posted November 20, 2013 Interesting theory. Based on what? Jason can do tremelo picking. That's pretty much the only thing I've seen him do that Billie hasn't.
The Disappearing Boy Posted November 20, 2013 Posted November 20, 2013 I was gonna assess and compare the technical ability of Billie and Jason based on their work in Green Day, but let's face it, if you're gonna assess someone's technical ability at guitar, you aren't gonna use Green Day's music, are you!
Tubbie Head Posted November 20, 2013 Posted November 20, 2013 Is it just me or do all the hysterical, screaming fangirls in "Are We The Waiting" off of BIAB kill the entire song? Actually I really like that. I love to hear the crowd in live recordings, and during that song it's extremely loud and hilarious, so I love it!
Flyingdonutz Posted November 20, 2013 Posted November 20, 2013 Jason can do tremelo picking. That's pretty much the only thing I've seen him do that Billie hasn't. Tremelo picking is a very, very basic technique. Like, yeah. Billie Joe probably kicks Jason's ass, it's just that when you watch them live he's more about keeping his crowd entertained than looking like a good guitarist because at the end of the day, he's no Kirk Hammett or Eddie Van Halen so it'd be a waste of time. Billie wrote the East Jesus Nowhere solo. So obviously he can trem pick too.

Have you not HEARD Dry Ice? /typical flimsy fanboy argument Jason can do tremelo picking. That's pretty much the only thing I've seen him do that Billie hasn't. Pretty sure Billie's done it in some solos. In any case, it's only fair to assume he can do it, it's piss easy and he's been playing for about 1000 years.

Well then they're at least as good as each other I was just using it because it was the only thing I could think of.
The Disappearing Boy Posted November 20, 2013 Posted November 20, 2013 Billie jumps when playing guitar. Jason wouldn't even try that.
Spike Posted November 20, 2013 Posted November 20, 2013 Billie jumps when playing guitar. Jason wouldn't even try that. Too dangerous, weak ankles, doesn't want to wrinkle his suit, etc.
Guest Posted November 20, 2013 Posted November 20, 2013 Billie jumps when playing guitar. Jason wouldn't even try that. There's a very small chance due to quantum physics that gravity might fail and he'd end up drifting through the atmosphere and burning up. Much safer not jumping.
The Disappearing Boy Posted November 20, 2013 Posted November 20, 2013 Too dangerous, weak ankles, doesn't want to wrinkle his suit, etc. Exactly. It's far too risky.
