Spoopy Doo Posted November 18, 2013 Posted November 18, 2013 If enough people knew the lyrics to it, it would probably have a bigger effect but meh. Lots of people knew the lyrics at Pittsburgh.
Cameron. Posted November 18, 2013 Posted November 18, 2013 i think Tre's "songs" are horrendous and unlistenable

Tubbie Head Posted November 18, 2013 Posted November 18, 2013 I'm always soooo thankful when GD does a slower or boring song halfway through the set it's just like praise all the gods I get to rest for a minute! Hahah definitely, Oh Love is THE moment to rest, take pics etc
UNICORN VOMIT Posted November 19, 2013 Posted November 19, 2013 Oh Love I agree was not a good single choice but I like the song and it is a perfect ending to UNO - setting up for the life stuff ups in DOS.
Spike Posted November 19, 2013 Posted November 19, 2013 That's the thing about Oh Love. I've always thought it was really dull on its own, just so, so boring. But in the context of Uno it works really well. Terrible choice of first single as it doesn't stand up on its own, why they didn't go for Nuclear Family or Stay The Night I'll never know.

Have Green Day ever chosen a good lead single? While I love "Longview" and "American Idiot", neither is representative of their album. Nor is "Oh Love", and definitely not "Know Your" motherfucking "Enemy".

The only albums that had good lead singles are Nimrod and American Idiot Arguably Warning too, but Know Your Enemy, Oh Love, Longview and Geek Stink Breath? Hmm...

Yeah, it's a good song and a pretty good representation of the album, but there are so many strong tracks on Insomniac there were still quite a few stronger songs they could have gone with.

I do want to rail at Billie and co. for not making "Stuart and the Ave." a single. Or putting "J.A.R." on the album instead of attaching it to a dumb movie no one remembers anymore.

HolyHandGrenade Posted November 19, 2013 Posted November 19, 2013 Yeah, if JAR was on there instead of Tight Wad Hill it'd undoubtedly be a perfect album. 86 is still a bit too repetitive, I and I think Panic Song's intro should be quite longer actually. The only albums that had good lead singles are Nimrod and American Idiot Arguably Warning too, but Know Your Enemy, Oh Love, Longview and Geek Stink Breath? Hmm... X-Kid for Tre was good I noticed the speed live when they played St. Jimmy. God damn. That's fast. One song the increased tempo works wonders for is Minority Even with SWTRLF, they compressed an sub 2:30 song into an even smaller amount of time (minus hey-ooohs and guitar solos). Depending on my mood it seems to have worked wonders (especially with the light effects) or to have fallen on its face

X-Kid for Tre was good I love 86, but I agree the chorus could do with changing a couple of times. Panic Song is brilliant as it is but could be even better with more going on in the intro. Yeah, I love X-Kid. It tends not to be considered a first single though, the trilogy seems to be considered one album in that respect. Probably down to Oh Love being the only single to get any real publicity.

Yes, I'm sure we'd be having a different conversation if the rehab didn't occur. Then again, we probably would have Green Day anymore... but I digress. Objectivity aside, it does make more sense to regard a lead single as one representing a new era, so to speak, of their career than the lead of specific albums, collaborations, or miscellaneous projects (in the vein of The Simpsons or Working Class Hero). By that metric, pre-AI certainly has the leg up

It's just that there are so many superior songs to Know Your Enemy and Oh Love on their respective albums, they could have easily marked a change of direction in better ways.

I'm sure Mike and Tre wouldn't just abandon either the band or the man - a hiatus would have been more likely. But with all the support BJ has, the rehab was inevitable, so there's really no argument anyway.

Something had to give, and if rehab hadn't happened things could have been far worse.
DookieLukie Posted November 19, 2013 Posted November 19, 2013 I find "Longview" to be a great song. One of the most inventive of Green Day's career. "Geek Stink Breath" may not have been the best single, but it's a great song. "Hitchin' a Ride" is also quite unique in terms of Green Day songs. "Minority" is a great leading track. "American Idiot" may not have been the best song on the album, but it introduced the album very well to the public. Great song. "Know Your Enemy" sucks. "Oh Love" was great in my opinion, but "Nuclear Family" or "Stay the Night" would have been better promotion.

Spike Posted November 19, 2013 Posted November 19, 2013 Was Minority ever an opener for GD during their tours for Warning? I don't think so. Nice Guys Finish Last was the one they opened with most. Maria, Church On Sunday and Welcome To Paradise were also used.
Guest Posted November 19, 2013 Posted November 19, 2013 Was Minority ever an opener for GD during their tours for Warning? Nope. Don't think they've ever opened a show with it.
WhiteTim Posted November 19, 2013 Posted November 19, 2013 Nope. Don't think they've ever opened a show with it. Roseland Ballroom in 2000 is the only time I can recall Minority being the opener
localinsomniac Posted November 19, 2013 Posted November 19, 2013 Roseland Ballroom in 2000 is the only time I can recall Minority being the opener Axis is Boston just a few nights after that. And I can't remember if the Live Without Warning HBO show opened with it, or with Church on Sunday. I never got sick of Oh Love. I also never heard the song before listening to the whole album, so that probably has a lot to do with it.
