Spike Posted November 13, 2013 Posted November 13, 2013 When I Come Around isn't romantic I think it's a break up song. If you really look at the lyrics he's basically saying "I'll see you around" Yeah, good point. Especially "You can't go forcing something if it's just not right." But it's still very sentimental and seems to be saying "I'm sorry it didn't work out" as well. So it's nice in that respect.
Hermione Posted November 13, 2013 Posted November 13, 2013 How late is a bit late ?Oh not very, we weren't even sure exactly when it was supposed to start because originally the time had included time for a support band but there wasn't one. I think they let us in about half an hour late and then it just seemed like longer than usual that we were waiting. They still had time to play a full two hour show though.
Jax Teller Posted November 13, 2013 Posted November 13, 2013 I think Green Day has better stuff if you like romantic. (I like Last Night On Earth) Sure they have better. 2000 Light Years Away, Last Night On Earth, Stray Heart, Missing You, Dry Ice... I love these songs. I have only recently come to appreciate the song 21st Century Breakdown. A brilliant piece. I could listen to 5 more minutes of that song. 21st Century Breakdown is one of the best songs of Green Day imo.
munns6691 Posted November 13, 2013 Posted November 13, 2013 21st Century Breakdown is one of the best songs of Green Day imo. I'd back you on that!
Spoopy Doo Posted November 13, 2013 Posted November 13, 2013 Fuck Time could have been written by any horny 16 year old (actually, most of the songs Billie wrote as a horny 16 year old are vastly superior to Fuck Time). As a horny 16-year-old I find this highly offensive
Guest Posted November 13, 2013 Posted November 13, 2013 As a horny 16-year-old I find this highly offensive Go cry about it. Then use the tears as lube for your next wank.
Certified Nimrod Posted November 13, 2013 Posted November 13, 2013 I wish Stay the night had the 2010 intro. Now that was epic What's different about it? EDIT: Wait, nevermind, I just listened to it again. It is pretty cool. Too bad there isn't a better recording.
The Disappearing Boy Posted November 13, 2013 Posted November 13, 2013 I've just listened to the 2010 version again. I'd forgotten how good it was.
munns6691 Posted November 14, 2013 Posted November 14, 2013 As a horny 16-year-old I find this highly offensive Not gonna lie this makes me uncomfortable lmao
Spoopy Doo Posted November 14, 2013 Posted November 14, 2013 Not gonna lie this makes me uncomfortable lmao I was just kidding
Z J Posted November 14, 2013 Posted November 14, 2013 Church on Sunday is one of Green Day's best songs IMO. But it's done a great disservice by the way its played live, too fast. Ruins a great melody and makes it impossible for Billie to work with those excellent vocal runs we hear in the studio
munns6691 Posted November 14, 2013 Posted November 14, 2013 I was just kidding Lmao me too, just another realization that I'm getting old
Ritz Posted November 16, 2013 Posted November 16, 2013 I hate how they play with the tempo of the songs while playing live. Some songs are meant to be played at the same tempo. Making it faster kind of ruins it.

Making it faster kind of ruins it. That happens to most bands during gigs, though. The adrenaline just naturally makes you play faster, and that's more likely to be the case when there's as much energy and excitement as at a Green Day gig.
Anaïs. Posted November 16, 2013 Posted November 16, 2013 I don't get why people hate the studio version of "Knowledge". Yeah, it's slow, but I still think it's loads of fun.
Spike Posted November 16, 2013 Posted November 16, 2013 I don't get why people hate the studio version of "Knowledge". Yeah, it's slow, but I still think it's loads of fun. For me it's not just the slowness, it's Billie's vocal delivery. He just seems so bored and like he really can't be arsed. It's just so much more fun live, because it's faster and he sounds like he means it.
The Disappearing Boy Posted November 16, 2013 Posted November 16, 2013 The difference in tempo live really is noticeable. The other day I had my iPod on shuffle and I was playing along to some of the songs and Holiday came up twice in a row - the album version followed by the BIAB version. The difference in tempo really was striking.
Hermione Posted November 16, 2013 Posted November 16, 2013 I don't think it's very noticeable when you're actually seeing them live though, it isn't for me anyway. Like the band you get caught up in the excitement of the show when you're there in the crowd. I'd say the songs being faster probably just makes the experience feel even more energetic, if anything, rather than being something you notice on it's own.
Spike Posted November 16, 2013 Posted November 16, 2013 I was playing a gig once, and in rehearsals we'd noticed that we were doing No One Knows by Queens Of The Stone Age far too fast. So we slowed it down, and when we played it at the gig at a slower speed it totally killed the energy. It might not translate as well to live recordings, but when you're experiencing a song live and having the adrenaline rush that goes with it, faster is more enjoyable. Some songs call for being played slow for the sake of the power, it can feel more anthemic and stuff, but in general Green Day's stuff isn't like that for the most part. Particularly early in the set. Plus, if Green Day played slower live they wouldn't fit as many songs in and even more people would whine about what they do and don't play
JOE THE X-KID Posted November 16, 2013 Posted November 16, 2013 I'm not taking about live shows but why do people seem to hate slow Green Day songs, it's nice to have some slower, lower dynamics ballads occasionally.
Spoopy Doo Posted November 16, 2013 Posted November 16, 2013 I'm not taking about live shows but why do people seem to hate slow Green Day songs, it's nice to have some slower, lower dynamics ballads occasionally. The only "slow" song by them I don't like is Good Riddance, and that may not even be considered a slow song. I like Last Night on Earth, When it's Time, Brutal Love, and even Rest. I know there's more but I can't think of all of them right now.
tdlyon Posted November 16, 2013 Posted November 16, 2013 I love the fact that they speed their songs up live. Blink 182 used to make their songs crazy fast live but stopped recently, glad GD is still doing it.

Blink 182 used to make their songs crazy fast live but stopped recently, glad GD is still doing it. Yeah I like the slightly sped up tempo. For most songs its works fine. The only "slow" song by them I don't like is Good Riddance, and that may not even be considered a slow song. I like Last Night on Earth, When it's Time, Brutal Love, and even Rest. I know there's more but I can't think of all of them right now. You like Rest but not Good Riddance? Now that is an unpopular opinion
Spike Posted November 16, 2013 Posted November 16, 2013 Good Riddance isn't even slow, it's around 170bpm. That's only marginally slower than Welcome To Paradise. I like most of their ballad-type songs, not a fan of When It's Time but Brutal Love, Last Night On Earth, Are We The Waiting and BOBD are all great. 21 Guns wore thin after a while and The Forgotten is pretty boring, but beyond that I'd say these kinds of songs are definitely one of Green Day's strengths.
Z J Posted November 17, 2013 Posted November 17, 2013 I noticed the speed live when they played St. Jimmy. God damn. That's fast. One song the increased tempo works wonders for is Minority
