Spike Posted November 10, 2013 Posted November 10, 2013 Green Day owns their Lookout material and Reprise distributes the re releases Was that deal in place in 2001 when Superhits came out though? Because 39/Smooth and Kerplunk were reissued by Reprise in 2007, and Green Day didn't pull their material from Lookout until 2005 so I'm assuming they didn't own it or have the right to put any of it on Superhits until then.

Ahh good point didn't think about that lol
Asa. Posted November 11, 2013 Posted November 11, 2013 Worst trilogy lyrics are on LBNT. It's so cheesy.
Jax Teller Posted November 12, 2013 Posted November 12, 2013 I don't understand the hate about Stay The Night. "And we can watch the stars until the sun begins to rise" I love these lyrics.
Guest Posted November 12, 2013 Posted November 12, 2013 I don't understand the hate about Stay The Night. "And we can watch the stars until the sun begins to rise" I love these lyrics. That's actually one of the lines I don't really like. Kinda cheesy and boybandish.
Hermione Posted November 12, 2013 Posted November 12, 2013 I think a bit of cheese is OK as long as it's heartfelt. The whole charm of their earliest songs for example is the cheesy but totally real and honest (sometimes to the point of being embarrassingly honest) lyrics, it's impressive to hear someone lay their heart on their sleeve without worrying that it's too corny or not cool enough. I think Billie excels at that, fearlessly writing sweet and romantic lyrics and not caring if they're a bit cheesy.
Jax Teller Posted November 12, 2013 Posted November 12, 2013 That's actually one of the lines I don't really like. Kinda cheesy and boybandish. For me this line captures a romantic moment. I don't think romance is a thing of boybands. Yeah, it's kinda cheesy but it's a line that I can dedicate to my girlfriend (for example). I like it for what it is.
DookieLukie Posted November 12, 2013 Posted November 12, 2013 I agree that the trilogy lyrics seem a lot less "trivial" and shitty when you've actually been in that position so relate to them. I guess it's harder to relate because the subject matter is very different to even their weirdest older stuff. Yeah, that makes sense at least. It's these people who claim they "saw it in his eyes" or "I knew it when Tre opened the show" and all that bullshit. Everyone just thought it was funny that Tre opened, not weird. I remember thinking Billie seemed tired at Rock am See but I definitely didn't see rehab coming. Wait how did Tre open a show?
WhiteTim Posted November 12, 2013 Posted November 12, 2013 Wait how did Tre open a show? At Shepards Tre started the show with All By Myself
Hermione Posted November 12, 2013 Posted November 12, 2013 Wait how did Tre open a show? At Shepherds Bush in August last year, the band was a bit late on and then Tre came out and said Billie had laryngitis , and proceeded to open the show with All By Myself. Then the rest of the band came on and played Welcome To Paradise like usual. Billie said in an interview shortly afterwards that he'd been a "diva" before the show so we thought it must've just been a little dispute that delayed the start and made Tre open it. But then after all the rehab stuff it turned out that in fact Billie had been pretty messed up with pills etc, and that morning management had wanted to cancel the show and the rest of the shows they were playing and take him home to get him sorted out/in rehab, but he said no. So seems there were some much bigger problems going on than just him being a diva before the show. Buuut yeah, you couldn't tell any of that being in the crowd, it was just funny when Tre opened, the show was great, and it looked like the whole band was enjoying it. It's only with hindsight that a load of people claim they knew "something was wrong".

Spike Posted November 13, 2013 Posted November 13, 2013 I think Green Day has better stuff if you like romantic. (I like Last Night On Earth) Definitely. See also: 2000 Light Years Away, When I Come Around, Scattered, Missing You, Fell For You and quite a few songs from 39/Smooth. Billie's lyrics are a lot more romantic and sentimental than one would generally expect from the music they're set to.
Scott34 Posted November 13, 2013 Posted November 13, 2013 I have only recently come to appreciate the song 21st Century Breakdown. A brilliant piece. I could listen to 5 more minutes of that song.
Z J Posted November 13, 2013 Posted November 13, 2013 Definitely. See also: 2000 Light Years Away, When I Come Around, Scattered, Missing You, Fell For You and quite a few songs from 39/Smooth. Although not purely a romantic love song in the style of Last Night On Earth.
Flyingdonutz Posted November 13, 2013 Posted November 13, 2013 I hate Kerplunk. I just don't find it fun to listen to. Christie Road and 2000 Light Years Away are the only songs I frequent on it. I feel like I should listen to it a few more times, but still, idk. It just doesn't feel like it really matches up with even 39/Smooth. On that romance bit I've always thought Billie's lyrics were always based off of a romantic theme throughout the majority of his songs. American Idiot and 21st Century Breakdown both follow a romantic story. When I Come Around was the highest charted single off of Dookie, Time of your Life being one of the most popular songs ever written, and now the trilogy is just filled with songs like that. I could list all of them but I just feel that would be a waste of time. Look at stuff like Haushinka or Church on Sunday, though. It's like half of his songs are written about girls. And 39 Smooth is basically a concept record about being in the friendzone or being stuck in a relationship you're unsure about.

Seriously, though—even if you're not a Kerplunk fan, how can you say it's worse than 39/Smooth? The lyrics aren't even in the same galaxy, and its songs would be just as amazing as the singles from Dookie if their production was better.

One For the Razorbacks, 80, One of My Lies, Who Wrote Holden Caulfield. All excellent. good lyrics too especially when you consider their age
rebelpunx Posted November 13, 2013 Posted November 13, 2013 I love DOS and Nightlife, there.... i said it

rebelpunx Posted November 13, 2013 Posted November 13, 2013 Someone had to. the theme of sex appeals to me i guess, and sexual desires, probably because I'm a pornologist... I mean psychologist

All excellent. good lyrics too especially when you consider their age Kerplunk is so underrated and had it followed Dookie instead of preceeded it, Kerplunk would have been maybe just as popular. 2000 Light Years Away One For the Razorbacks Christie Road One of My lies 80 Android Who Wrote Holden Caufield Are all top notch tracks. With a better production and a stronger vocal sound they would be rated much higher in popularity

With a better production and a stronger vocal sound they would be rated much higher in popularity Yep! Especially 2000 Light Years Away and One For The Razorbacks. The solo in the latter is killer, Billie's all-time best in my opinion. I honestly think that the run of tracks from 2000 Light Years Away to Christie Road is the best 4 song run on any Green Day album, even over American Idiot to BOBD, Basket Case to When I Come Around, Babs Uvula Who to Stuart & The Ave or Hitchin' A Ride to Scattered. There's a lot of competition!

If you really look at the lyrics he's basically saying "I'll see you around"
