Unpopular Green Day Opinions

Same here :ninja: , I think the lyrics are terrible.

I've got an impulse so repulsive that it burns

I wanna break your heart until it makes your stomach turn

The whole chorus

And now the worst:

And we can watch the stars until the sun begins to rise

For ages I thought it was "And we can watch the stars until the sun forgets to rise. In a way I actually like that slightly better, even though it really doesn't make much sense. Though I really don't get why you think that those lyrics are so terrible?

Stay The Night is one of their best songs overall in my opinion. The studio intro sucks but after that it's fantastic. That instrumental breakdown is the single most immersive bit of the trilogy, and it's one of the best set of lyrics Billie has ever written. Plus that pre chorus chord progression, as generic as it is, is bloody incredible in the context of the song. And those backing vocals in the chorus, oh my god I can't even.

It's on YouTube at the very least :) -

Thanks for putting that on there, just watched the whole thing again, it was great. And, he didn't look as bad as I remember - just tired.

Maybe cause it's cliche ? But if you think about it, a few of their songs are cliche... personally it doesn't bother me, cause they won't not to write a song only because a few fans would find that ''cliche''.

The thing that really annoy me in that song is that all the lines of the second verse begin by ''well''. Billie, didn't you learn the linking words in school ?

Yes good point I suppose. And now that second verse is going to annoy me as well from now on

One unpopular opinion I have is that Going to Pasalacqua is the most overrated song amongst the hardcore fanbase. I say this purely because it gets mentioned absolutely every time Green Day's most underrated songs are mentioned. I honestly think that song gets more attention than it deserves nowadays.

Same goes for the album Warning. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love that album. But I honestly feel that some people just claim that it is their favourite purely just to stand out from the crowd. That certainly doesn't go for everybody who says it is their favourite, just a few.

Seriously?! That line is fucking awesome, love the bitterness of it.

Because they're trivial. I don't know, it feels like they had created a catchy tune and then pasted some lyrics on it without much thought behind.

Seriously?! That line is fucking awesome, love the bitterness of it.

Yep I don't think it's that great, it sounds too poor, especially when compared to other lyrics he wrote.

For once I agree with you about a Trilogy lyric, that's definitely one of the better lines :P

Every trilogy song is average or bad.Every single one of them.

Maybe only Lazy Bones stands out a little but still if it was on AI it would be like extraordinary girl or something.

Posted

You must be joking! At the very least, Nuclear Family is fantastic and could easily go on most previous Green Day albums.

As for Stay The Night, it's not a trivial lyric at all. I can relate to those lyrics a lot. If you haven't been in the position necessary to be able to relate to the lyrics they might be harder to appreciate, but they're not trivial in any way.

Extraordinary Girl is amazing! I think AI is more or less their best album in terms of every song being relevant and awesome. Seriously it's like their Mona Lisa or something

I don't think this is an unpopular opinion. But whilst the song is being mentioned, I still have no idea what the point of those weird tribal drums are at the start of Extraordinary Girl. They really seem to come out of nowhere, and I can remember that it really threw me off the first time I ever heard the song. It actually took me a few years to get over it and just enjoy the song

They're a way of getting a breather between "She's a Rebel" and the main body of "Extraordinary Girl", and go well with the latter's "exotic" guitar riff.

No they don't, it's only the first two. Only four lines in the whole song start with well, it's just that three of them are close together.

Well you're so sick and tired of feeling so alone

Well I don't understand the point if you have to go home

So won't you stay and count the circles 'round my eyes?

And we can watch the stars until the sun begins to rise

There's still too much well to me x)))

That said, I love that song anyway. Although I prefer Cigarettes and Valentines, even the lyrics are fairly the same, I mean the meaning.

I agree that the trilogy lyrics seem a lot less "trivial" and shitty when you've actually been in that position so relate to them. I guess it's harder to relate because the subject matter is very different to even their weirdest older stuff.

I absolutely agree, I thought they were both great shows and would have loved to have been there. However, I can say, hand on heart, that I was a bit worried after the surprise show at Reading last year, where I thought he looked really run down and ill. I kept thinking and hoping that it was just because it was relatively early in the morning and they had been so busy, but then the collapse and the admittance to hospital happened (with dehydration) and then I was REALLY worried. Not that I saw iHeart coming or anything, but I was a bit worried.

Honest, I was.

Yeah, that makes sense at least. It's these people who claim they "saw it in his eyes" or "I knew it when Tre opened the show" and all that bullshit. Everyone just thought it was funny that Tre opened, not weird. I remember thinking Billie seemed tired at Rock am See but I definitely didn't see rehab coming.

Yeah. But when I re think about it, I wondr how we couldn't see. Of course it's personnal, but, he had a really dirty face, and usually the face shows a lot (I have a little experience) . I mean, try to compare the before and the after. I saw a meme that did the comparision.

But globally, it's true that we didn't expect that at all.

I see how you can appreciate a song more when you can relate to it, but I think that sometimes the way you express something is even more important than the actual subject in a way.
This may sound stupid, but I mean that if the line of a song was for example "dictatorship is bad" each one of us would think yeah I agree, but it wouldn't make that same line a good line, because it's expressing something that everyone else could have said, while a songwriter should have said the same thing in his own way, in a more creative way, this way I'd appreciate it more.

I see what you're getting at, yeah. But with that in mind, sometimes simplicity is what makes something so great. Take The Smiths as an example. A lot of Morrissey's lyrics are so simple, and seem so obvious when you hear them, but are also expressed in a way a lot of people would never have thought of. I think that's the key, and their songs are the voice of a generation. I think the same is true of Green Day. A lot of their songs sound very simple lyrically, but it's actually a lot harder to do than it may seem.

Nuclear Family like all Uno is like one song on repeat.Nothing new.Nothing clever.Only Kill The DJ stands as new and interesting. Also since you can relate and I can't can you please tell me what Nuclear Family is about?Since Billie himself said it's just lyrics and he has no idea what it's about. So yeah thanks a lot Billie for releasing every little shit that comes to your mind next time think a little before release songs or ideas.

Dos is my favorite from the trilogy which is alone an unpopular opinion on it's own since everyone hates it so I don't feel it is too bad but i surely could be better.Work more on less songs. That's what they needed.

And everything from Tre except from Brutal Love, Dramma Queen and Missing You is boring as fuck. And these songs ain't even something new or interesting. It's just that they have a lot of talent as a band and they can't 100% suck on anything imo. They just need to be more focused on the next album and I hope my love for them will come back again.

Yeah I like Extraordinary Girl too! That's why AI is an awesome album.Because the worst song in it,in my opinion, is great too!Just stating that best from the trilogy is just great and not close to green day awesomeness level...But yeah what up with that random percussion on the start?I never got that too!

I agree that Uno is very samey. I think Nuclear Family gets unfair criticism because it's on that album, but listened to in isolation it stands up to anything from Nimrod or Warning. That album gets worse and worse as it goes along because like you say, most songs on it sound the same. I've never bothered to try and work out what those lyrics are all about though, I'm sure I could come up with something, but when I said I could relate I meant to Stay The Night.

They wrote over 80 songs for the trilogy and released less than half of them, so I think it's pretty unfair to say they release every 'little shit' that comes to mind. I agree they should release less songs in general, 21st Century Breakdown suffered massively from being too long and having too many sub-standard songs, as did Nimrod. Insomniac is my favourite album because there's no filler, it's just 14 songs, half an hour, done. Sure some songs are far better than others but I get the impression serious quality control went into it.

I think that's pretty harsh about Tre. It's certainly the best album of the three, the songs you mentioned are very good but what about X-Kid (the best song on the trilogy in my opinion), Dirty Rotten Bastards, 99 Revolutions, or Sex Drugs & Violence? They're not without issues but they're no less good than a lot of songs on Warning.

Uhm I can't relate to song about wanting a guy/girl spend the rest of the night with me?Have you seen me?Wow big subject you have there to relate!I didn't know Green Day wrote songs for 13 year olds!

I agree with you in the second paragraph.Absolutely! My favorite record is Insomniac it's just awesome.

Yeah I forgot DRB it's a good song too.And I knew you would say X-kid everyone seems to love that song.Billie said it's about a friend commiting suicide. And Mike even tattooed it.And I'm sitting here listening to this song reading the lyrics trying to make myself like it or at least understand why everyone loves it but I just can't.The music after the part in the start becomes lazy and boring like every other song on the Trilogy and the lyrics?Meh...I don't know I just don't get them.Nothing special on this song for me.

Oh absolutely, I don't think a song has to be too elaborated to be good but I was talking more about triviality than simplicity, a song can be simple but not trivial and it can be a good song as you said. Take 2000 Light Years Away for example, the lyrics are simple but I wouldn't classify them as banal.

I think there's a lot more to it than that, though. "I gotta know if you're the one that got away, even though it was never meant to be," adds a lot in my opinion. But of course they write songs for 13 year olds, just look at Longview :P

I think X-Kid depends on your experience. Obviously I haven't killed myself but that song says a lot to me about myself, so it means a lot to me. That's the thing, lyrics don't just have to mean what they mean to the original writer, and that's the beauty of it!

¡Uno! always has been and probably always will be my least favorite of the Trilogy. Nuclear Family is okay; Stay the Night is a good song that was ruined by the studio version; Carpe Diem is just boring; I almost always skip Let Yourself Go; Kill the DJ would be great if not for that godawful chorus; Fell for You on its own is good, but when listening to the full album it's just boring; Loss of Control is just disappointing; Troublemaker is good but sounds out-of-place; Angel Blue is one of my Trilogy favorites; Sweet 16 is great on its own; Rusty James is fantastic; Oh Love is just okay.

I think if most of the Trilogy songs mentioned on this page had been put on one album, it would have been brilliant. Add Lady Cobra into that mix too.

Oh and Uno is easily their worst album. Nuclear Family and Stay the Night are great, LYG is alright, I see what they were trying to do with Kill the DJ, and it would have been great if not for the chorus. Fell for You is horribly cheesy, but I'm a sucker for a decent melody and that song does have that. Every thing else is no better than average and Oh Love is one of the worst songs they've ever released.
