Spike Posted November 9, 2013 Posted November 9, 2013 I know that lol I don't understand what he meant by "It speaks volumes that they scrap the studio intro live. Way for them to believe in their work." What Darth Praxus said People go on and on about how much they clearly believe in their music, but they routinely change bits live. I get that it's necessary in some cases to keep the energy up, but in this case I get the impression they just don't like the studio version that much. They didn't play a full set They played around an hour I think, it was 16 songs. The BBC showed half an hour and it was about 6 songs I think.
Certified Nimrod Posted November 9, 2013 Posted November 9, 2013 People go on and on about how much they clearly believe in their music, but they routinely change bits live. Lots of bands add intros or outros at concerts. Did you get my PM? I'm not sure if it sent.
Spike Posted November 9, 2013 Posted November 9, 2013 Lots of bands add intros or outros at concerts. Did you get my PM? I'm not sure if it sent. True, ever seen Muse live? Yeah I got it, I just haven't been online for a bit!
Certified Nimrod Posted November 9, 2013 Posted November 9, 2013 True, ever seen Muse live? Yeah I got it, I just haven't been online for a bit! Nope, I've never listened to them, but I've seen Linkin Park and they always add stuff to songs.
Iva Posted November 9, 2013 Posted November 9, 2013 True, ever seen Muse live? Yeah I got it, I just haven't been online for a bit! Or RHCP in the classic era. And yes, I always say the same stuff.
Spike Posted November 9, 2013 Posted November 9, 2013 Or RHCP in the classic era. And yes, I always say the same stuff. The Chilis are shocking for live jams! I do like the 12 minute version of Give It Away from the Hyde Park album though. And the instrumental jam at the end of By The Way from that album is one of the best things they've ever done at all.
Cath Posted November 10, 2013 Posted November 10, 2013 Made by Idiotic Tendency on here. Enjoy. wow it's so much better that way! gonna switch the song on itunes
Z J Posted November 10, 2013 Posted November 10, 2013 Honestly though, there is definitely some kind of editing done. I'm sure it wasn't Green Days decision....fuckin' major labels. I think you're assuming too much. Billie's voice went under a lot more training and was a lot rangier on that tour.
JOE THE X-KID Posted November 10, 2013 Posted November 10, 2013 I wish Stay the night had the 2010 intro. Now that was epic
WhiteTim Posted November 10, 2013 Posted November 10, 2013 Honestly though, there is definitely some kind of editing done. I'm sure it wasn't Green Days decision....fuckin' major labels. If you are refering to AAF download the audience recordings they have the SAME exact effect on Billie's vocals unless Green Day found the bootleggers recording and added it after the fact as well...
munns6691 Posted November 10, 2013 Posted November 10, 2013 It may be unpopular but I don't like extending songs just to "jam" not my thing
Anaïs. Posted November 10, 2013 Posted November 10, 2013 It may be unpopular but I don't like extending songs just to "jam" not my thing I like it in relatively short doses (The Who's awe-inspiring "Magic Bus" at Leeds, for example), but I can't do thirty-minute long Jimmy Paige solos.
Spike Posted November 10, 2013 Posted November 10, 2013 It may be unpopular but I don't like extending songs just to "jam" not my thing I agree. The one thing I don't like about seeing Green Day live is the fact they make songs like American Idiot and Know Your Enemy 7 or 8 minutes long by dragging out every single bridge section by doing call-and-response with the audience or introducing the band for the 17th time that show.

You know what was fucking annoying? When they'd stop songs halfway through and do a load of hey ohs and then start another song without finishing it. Fuck that.
Spike Posted November 10, 2013 Posted November 10, 2013 You know what was fucking annoying? When they'd stop songs halfway through and do a load of hey ohs and then start another song without finishing it. Fuck that. Oh for fuck's sake yes. They did that with 2000 Light Years Away one of the times I saw them. Er, guys, it's my favourite fucking song and there's 30 seconds of it left, it's not that hard to finish. No I do not want to hear Nice Guys Finish Last instead, it's shit.
Hermione Posted November 10, 2013 Posted November 10, 2013 You know what was fucking annoying? When they'd stop songs halfway through and do a load of hey ohs and then start another song without finishing it. Fuck that. Have to agree there, especially with Hitchin A Ride. If they're not gonna play the climax of that there's no point in playing any of it! I don't mind them extending songs though, usually it mean they're messing around and that's my favourite thing to see. Couldn't care less about the total number of songs they fit in to the show as long as they're entertaining me throughout.
Spike Posted November 10, 2013 Posted November 10, 2013 OK, here's one: Going To Pasalacqua is the best song in the set whenever they play it. I haven't heard it live once and it be anything less than absolutely fucking amazing.
Spike Posted November 10, 2013 Posted November 10, 2013 The pitch correction on AAF bothers me most on "East Jesus Nowhere"; on the final "A fire burns today," the pitch change is painfully obvious. I've just listened to the album in full. That's not pitch correction, that's a legit vocal wobble and he just about manages to catch himself! Same with bits of Christie Road.

I haven't heard it live once and it be anything less than absolutely fucking amazing. I didn't appreciate that song for a long time, but one day I was watching the Jaded in Chicago performance and something just clicked. The vocals are consistently amazing, I think; it sounds just as good back in '94 as it does on the 21CB tour. The whole song has a wonderfully celebratory, having-a-blast-together vibe, too, which is probably why it works so well live. It's a shame they couldn't have included older material on International Superhits!, because "Pasalacqua", "Christie Road", "Who Wrote Holden Caulfield?" and "80" are right up there with the best singles they've ever done.

Yeah, I agree! It's so much better live because it's got some balls, the production of the album version lets it down a bit, it sucks some of the energy out. Billie's voice on the 21st Century Breakdown tour was amazing though, and it really brought the best out of the song. Plus Mike was throwing fills everywhere like only he can. I don't think they were allowed to use anything pre-Dookie on Superhits though, as 39/Smooth and Kerplunk weren't released by Warner. It's a shame, some of their best songs are on the first two albums.

It's a shame, some of their best songs are on the first two albums. Even if they'd had the rights, Superhits! is a singles-only album (even "Maria" was released as a promotional single). :/ It's gonna suck if they ever do a second one covering AI era to now, because they've made some bloody awful single choices in the last thirteen years.

iltrenta Posted November 10, 2013 Posted November 10, 2013 Unpopular opinion: I don't understand the love for "Stay the Night". Same here , I think the lyrics are terrible. I've got an impulse so repulsive that it burns I wanna break your heart until it makes your stomach turn The whole chorus And now the worst: And we can watch the stars until the sun begins to rise
Mar Posted November 10, 2013 Posted November 10, 2013 Stay The Night is one of their best songs overall in my opinion. The studio intro sucks but after that it's fantastic. That instrumental breakdown is the single most immersive bit of the trilogy, and it's one of the best set of lyrics Billie has ever written. Plus that pre chorus chord progression, as generic as it is, is bloody incredible in the context of the song. And those backing vocals in the chorus, oh my god I can't even. Totally agree. I sometimes get chills when I listen to the bridge. If you guys have seen or read The Perks of Being a Wallflower, that scene where Sam stands up in the Fort Pitt Tunnel while listening to Bowie? When we were driving to our show in Pittsburgh, that part of the song was playing in the car as we went through the tunnel, and, as fucking cheesy as this sounds, it made me kind of emotional because it seemed like the perfect music to be playing as we went through that tunnel (because that scene came to mind) and I now always associate that song with that memory and that excitement I had of getting in line at 9 a.m. to wait outside in the rain all day on Easter going to the show.

I just wanted hear the whole of scattered goddamit
