Z J Posted November 4, 2013 Posted November 4, 2013 Fuck Nightlife. Seriously. The only reason it doesn't get MORE shit is because people qualify it with "it's not bad since it isn't really their genre" or that the song is a joke. It's a bad joke. I'm looking at it through a hip-hop filter. And all I see is shit. The lyrics? Weak and lame. Neither artist sounds like they've ever even attempted a hip-hop song before. The vocal filter makes me cringe. The hook sucks.
Heather. Posted November 4, 2013 Posted November 4, 2013 LOL my God people. If Billie has cheated at some point in his 20 year marriage, which let's face it is possible, it probably wasn't even WITH Lady Cobra. C'mon, that shit's too obvious

It is what it is, I've never heard anything like it. Comparing the song to someone like Public Enemy or something would be ridiculous on the face of it.
PleasedToMeetMe Posted November 4, 2013 Posted November 4, 2013 Dos is a very confused album. It tries to do too many things for being a 'party' record. It has some awesome rock and roll songs, some songs that sound like Foxboro Hot Tubs outttakes and a really bad rap song. If it were done right, it just might be my favorite Green Day album. It's just way too fucking confusing, I dont even think the band knew exactly what they were doing with Dos . .
WhiteTim Posted November 4, 2013 Posted November 4, 2013 I like Makeout Party. It's sexy. Yeah 40 year olds singing about teen age parties are sexy...

I think they were scared to make it a full blown garage rock album under the nane Green Day so they tried to add green day elements to the songs. What you get is a weird balance of confused songs.

It is what it is, I've never heard anything like it. Comparing the song to someone like Public Enemy or something would be ridiculous on the face of it. I have an irrational loathing toward that song. I know. And I only mean that it shouldn't get a pass just because it isn't their genre is all.
Z J Posted November 5, 2013 Posted November 5, 2013 I'm from the hip hop world and trust me there's a lot worse than Lady Cobra... And the filter was perfect for the song Each its own tho Her flow is pretty lame. And the lyrics even worse. I know hip-hop generally sets the bar low for lyrics but at least they they get creative with the rhythm Granted this is the only song I have (and ever hope to have) heard from her crazy wow such unpopular opinion there were a handful of nightlife fans poking their head out, obviously I had to do something to cease the madness

I know hip-hop generally sets the bar low for lyrics but at least they they get creative with the rhythm Granted this is the only song I have (and ever hope to have) heard from her That's not all true not all rappers are lacking in lyrics there are some I'd say write better lyrics than anything Billie has ever written but sadly they aren't mainstream cause lyrics for mainstream isn't important it seems But yeah Lady Cobra isn't nearly good but I've heard a lot worse lol But I get why folks don't like nightlife but I enjoy it (mainly Billies part)

But I'd like to hear who's better then Billie at his best!

But I'd like to here who's better then Billie at his best! Well I probally shouldn't have said better cause different styles and such let me correct myself amd say writes with as much passion as Billie But Scarface Joe Budden Andre 3000 are 3 off top I'd say writes lyrics with as much passion (check Budden's Dreamers or Ordinary Love Shit parts 1 2 & 3 among others which is beautiful and brutually honest written)

The others I'll have to check out. To get back on topic.... Stuart and The Ave is the best song they've never played live (correctly and fully). Hands down.
Spike Posted November 5, 2013 Posted November 5, 2013 Stuart and The Ave is the best song they've never played live (correctly and fully). Hands down. I'd say it's up there. Babs and Uptight are definitely my top 2. Have they ever played Redundant live? Probably a question for Tman Also Dirty Rotten Bastards will probably come up a lot in this debate, but I don't think it's a very good song. #controversial

Brian Gag Posted November 5, 2013 Posted November 5, 2013 I don't know how unpopular this opinion is, but I think Mike and Tre should have more microphone time - not to the point of overshadowing Billie, but it's always cool hearing one of them step up to the mic.
Z J Posted November 5, 2013 Posted November 5, 2013 Idk what Tre has done to earn more mic time but Mike I wouldn't mind getting a verse a little more frequently. Also want to hear him more on the backing vocals next time around. I'd say it's up there. Babs and Uptight are definitely my top 2. Have they ever played Redundant live? Probably a question for Tman Also Dirty Rotten Bastards will probably come up a lot in this debate, but I don't think it's a very good song. #controversial I enjoy it but it doesn't really do THAT much for me. Would be interesting live though. Babs is a good one. Redundant has been played a few times. Why do you want him? is another I'd like to see. That one may be unpopular!
DookieLukie Posted November 5, 2013 Posted November 5, 2013 Yeah 40 year olds singing about teen age parties are sexy... It's not a "good" song persay, but it's a good pump up song when you're in a good mood or feeling excited.
Anaïs. Posted November 5, 2013 Posted November 5, 2013 I think that opinion is like the dirty little secret of all GD fans. We want to hear it live, but we also know it's a bit weak. Certainly not deserving of the JOS comparisons! More deserving than "Oh Love", though—I still can't believe a reviewer made that comparison. It definitely is weak lyrically. Musically, I love the middle section, but not the "Carmen" intro/outro.
Oxymore Posted November 5, 2013 Posted November 5, 2013 I don't know how unpopular this opinion is, but I think Mike and Tre should have more microphone time - not to the point of overshadowing Billie, but it's always cool hearing one of them step up to the mic. It's true but if you compare with other bands, I think Tré and Mike are pretty lucky to interpret their Homecoming part, Dominated Love Slave, All by myself, and of course, dance the french-cancan...
Jax Teller Posted November 5, 2013 Posted November 5, 2013 Makeout Party aside from the solo is the worst skng GD has ever done... Ok maybe not that extreme but still worse than Nightlife Nightlife would be better if it had stayed as an instrumental as we had heard in the Cuatro. The album version with the weird voice filters and the Lady Cobra "rapping" is awkward. Makeout Party it has a sexy rock 'n' roll vibe and as you said a very good solo.
Jax Teller Posted November 5, 2013 Posted November 5, 2013 Yeah 40 year olds singing about teen age parties are sexy... The whole party theme of Dos is awkward for one reason: Dos should be released from Foxboro Hot Tubs. It's not like Makeout Party is the only song on Dos with that theme, the whole album is like this. If Foxboro Hot Tubs had released Dos and playing it in small clubs nobody would say even the slightest, beacuse this is the character of the band. Even the collaboration with Lady Cobra started through Foxboro Hot Tubs and the small clubs and should remain there, IMO.

I disagree most of the album isn't Foxboro like save for the music to Makeout Party Fuck Time and Wow That's Loud I think folks wanna call it Foxboro cause Billie said it was like a follow up to Foxboro but Lazy Bones See You Tonight Ashley Amy Nightlife SWTRLF aren't very Foxboro-y Good album still I enjoy ¡Dos! very much

The fact that many people seem uncomfortable with Dos is because it was released by Green Day and not Foxboro Hot Tubs. Sure, there are some songs that fit the style of Green Day like Lazy Bones or Ashley but the whole vibe from that record is Foxboro-y.
Hermione Posted November 5, 2013 Posted November 5, 2013 What exactly is wrong with 40 year olds singing about partying and sex? They're not dead yet, they're still doing and/or thinking about those things and there's nothing wrong with it. I don't find it awkward at all aside from when it's supposed to be awkward since it's about the bad/self destructive side of those things as well as the fun side. Billie gyrates and humps the floor and is all kinds of sexy on stage, I don't see how it's out of place in Green Day. Especially when most of it is done with a side of tongue in cheek humour. Fair enough if you find that kind of thing cringy in general but I don't know why their age should make a difference especially when they're not even very old! Hermione is like our lyrics guru. Love that girl Aww thanks , love you too! I hope no one actually thinks I'm trying to "tell" anyone anything with my basic lyric interpretations though , just saying what I think they mean like anyone could. But name me more than a handful of really clever instances of wordplay or humor on the Trilogy. I can't think of a single thing I found funny or clever on those records. Oh man where can I start , there's things that make me smile/laugh and wordplay I enjoy on nearly every song. If you can't think of a single thing then our tastes in lyrics and humour must just be very different. A example that covers several things from Kill The DJ: Your thoughts are so unholy In the holiest of holes Onward Christian soldiers Filled with jivin mind control I love how he comments on religious mind control in a humorously irreverent way, the phrase "holiest of holes" is hilarious and it's great wordplay on the different meanings of holy/holes. Another would be "I wouldn't say I'm straight cuz I'm bent out of shape" from Troublemaker, he makes a bold and clever statement with the different meanings of "straight" in a badass way there. And in the same song "I like your BMX-cellent tits" is such a funny and deliberately ridiculous bit of wordplay. On Dos there's the whole of See You Tonight and Fuck Time, a sweet little song about seeing someone that night, followed by a great parody of old 60's songs where they'd hint at stuff but never say anything explicit that does the opposite and tells you exactly what they're going to be doing when they see each other . On Walk Away there's: When you fall You're gonna need a parachute Or a used pair of shoes to go And walk away The fact he rhymed parachute with pair of shoes amuses me very much, it's silly but it also makes total sense. These are just a few examples but there's so many little things like that on the albums especially on Uno, I'd add pretty much very line of Loss Of Control and Let Yourself Go to the list. I find myself really impressed with the mix of humour, raunchiness, serious points, darkness and emotion every time I listen to any of the albums.
