The album would have been much better if that were it's actual title!

So I'll play defense here. I was just thinking this morning how much I love 21st Century Breakdown, pretty much minus KYE. But I can accept it. Especially since when Billie says "know your enemy" in Restless Heart Syndrome shit goes crazy. The difference between Sweet 16 and 1000 Hours is there's actually passion and attempt in 1000 Hours while Sweet 16 sounds like he didn't even try. Though I do like the chorus a lot the verses are like rubbish I dunno. And I like the line in Drama Queen "she's old enough to bleed now". It's obviously not about having her period or anything it's that she's old enough to feel pain and consequence. She's not a kid. Duh. Nightlife VS Sweet 16....why even bother

Obviously :P It's still what it sounds like though, and was my first thought upon hearing it, which killed the whole thing for me.

Hope there's more in your pants than a bus route

Billie didn't write the verses to Nightlife tho...

He allowed it though :D

I actually like Sweet 16 and Know Your Enemy

lbr though drama queen sucks even if that line isn't about periods

I thought Drama Queen was beautiful on the live recording, and then it became oddly lifeless on Tre. It's cute (particularly the instrumental bridge), but nothing special.

Sleep on the floor on cardboard
Stab out my heart like a dartboard
So Adrienne is a crazy hobo woman who likes knifing dartboards.
Genius.

Well yeah, he's reminiscing about when they were kind of "hobos". When they met he was living in squats and touring around in an old van sleeping on people's floors, that was their lifestyle. Clearly they'd have some fond/romantic memories of that time.

Daddy's little bundle of joy

Out of a magazine

Everyone's drama queen

Is old enough to bleed now

What's wrong with it? It's supposed to be creepy :P, it's about how showbiz parents and the entertainment industry creepily push young girls into the limelight as soon as they're "old enough to bleed". It's suitably gross I think.

Hermione I swear you can justify even the dumbest of lyrics.

A true talent given some of the crap on the trilogy.

For some reason, "Sweet 16" makes me think of summer in a very nostalgic way. I have no idea why, but I like the emotions and memories it evokes for me, so I like the song :P

It has an incredibly nostalgic feel. The guitar solo, I think, really embodies the nostalgic feel of the song somehow. That's what I like in the song.

I can only justify them because they're not dumb :P. I dunno, there used to always be discussions about the meaning of lyrics on here, just because the meaning isn't immediately obvious or they're strange or funny or a bit cheesy it doesn't automatically mean there's something wrong with them. Not sure when this trend of posting some lyrics and just scoffing "these lyrics are dumb" instead of trying to work out the meaning started but I'm not a huge fan of it, there's bits of lyrics that could look silly out of context on every one of their albums but there's a difference between that and them actually being bad/not making sense in the context of the song and album.

Well yeah, I know it's meant to be creepy in that respect, but it's just so grating. The point he's trying to make is put across well without it, so this song is just plodding along nicely, then something just has to come along and turn it weird. I guess it doesn't help that it sounds like Oasis, and one doesn't really expect deep social commentary from them :P

So I see what you're saying, there's just something weird about a 40 year old man singing about such things. Plus, given how rushed a lot of the trilogy was and how little effort went into it lyrically in places, it's hard to shake the assumption of "he wrote this without thinking of the implications," y'know? Which is probably very silly, but there we go. The issue isn't even about it being a dumb lyric or anything, it's not, it's just... nasty.

The lyric isn't necessarily talking about menstruation though is it? It could be metaphoric for a girl being old enough to make her own choices and mistakes and suffer the consequences for them. Don't get me wrong I agree with you, I'm not a fan of the line, just offering a different less literal interpretation.

Why is it weird for anyone to sing about the unpleasant way the media/entertainment industry works though? He only brings in creepiness to illustrate how, well, creepy it is! Plus as explained above the reference to menstruation is a metaphor. I agree it's nasty but I can't see it as being a bad thing when that's the point of the song.

And I do expect deep social commentary from them! It's there on every album they've released to some extent, even right back on their first album with songs like Road To Acceptance. I know this is the unpopular opinions thread and everyone's going have lines they don't like for whatever reason. But in most cases I don't think that means the line is bad.

I think 30 % of this thread is about the "inappropriate" line of Drama Queen.

I always cringe at how much folks talk about the trilogy lyrics

Are they the best ever written? Well no but not everything has to be top of the line wake me up when september ends or whatever... they are good for the songs required

Well yeah, I know it's not meant to be taken literally. The first time I heard it, though, I did take it literally, and my response was just "oh." Didn't see it coming, y'know? I do kind of like the way the metaphor works, though.

It's just the way he phrases it I think. To me it kind of blurs the line between singing about creepiness and just being creepy

Oh yeah, I agree entirely. I was unclear I guess, I meant I don't expect it from Oasis, and that's who the song sounds like. Social commentary is one of the main things I expect from Green Day these days, and I love them more for it.

I never associated that line in Drama Queen with periods. I'd never even thought of it until I saw it mentioned on here, actually.

And as for Sweet 16... I like it. Not the best on the trilogy, but it's a cute little song, I think. It's enjoyable and easy to listen to, at the very least, since the subject/lyrics aren't heavy or anything.

I love dissecting lyrics too! It's always been my favorite part of music since I first started listening to my mom's cd of Dookie when I was like 6. And now I write them so I sit around all day with lyrics. Lol. American Idiot is, to me, Billie's best lyrical work on an album but he's always been one of the best. He has such a strong point of view.

Fair enough there, maybe I'm just not as bothered by him being creepy then

And oops, in that case we do agree entirely!

Totally! The lyrics are the most important thing for me too, they're what attracted me to the band and I don't think I'll ever get tired of obsessing over them. And each album is so different lyrically, I don't think I could pick a favourite because they're all so good in different ways. I'm pretty much in awe of Billie as a songwriter. Awesome that you write them yourself as well after your early start on them, I admire and envy anyone with that creativity!
