Believe it or not I actually made the thread for it http://www.greendaycommunity.org/topic/95162-billie-joe-armstrong-norah-jones-unveil-duets-lp-of-everly-brothers-covers/ They're good, solid, covers, but again, nothing too new or special about them.
Spike Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 Exactly. Green Day are not a band I go to when I want creativity. It always baffles me how the band who wrote Homecoming can't put a fresh spin on a single old song. Where can I hear it? Also I really enjoy their Like A Rolling Stone and Working Class Hero covers. And Alison. I think I was majorly put off Twerking Class Hero by the fact the Manics released a cover of it in the same week and it absolutely destroyed Green Day's, even though it's a crap song to start with.

Eh, Homecoming is great and all but at the end of the day it's just a bunch of pop-punk songs in 4/4 stuck together. A bit off topic, but have you ever heard the Manic's cover of Pennyroyal Tea? Heard it the other day for the first time in years and fell in love with it all over again.

Yeah I have, they did it last time I saw them live. Now THAT is a band who knows how to do a cover.

Spoopy Doo Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 I dunno, KYE seems a lot worse given that it's immediately after 21st Century Breakdown, which is one of the best songs they've ever done.I actually made a copy for myself of 21st Century Breakdown without Know Your Enemy and 21 Guns. ¡Viva la Gloria! (to me) sounds a lot better following 21st Century Breakdown than 3 minutes of "DO YOU KNOW YOUR ENEMY? DO YOU KNOW YOUR ENEMY? WELL GOTTA KNOW THE ENEMY RAHEY!"oh and I put the static at the end of Horseshoes and Handgrenades at the end of Drama Queen, and put it before The Static Age. American Eulogy doesn't sound very good following The Static Age though. :/ So it seems 21 Guns is necessary.

Oh yeah I heard it well after the fact. With regard to their lack of creativity with covers, do they have to change the song or be "innovative" with it for it to be good? For me personally, just hearing Green Day singing a Lennon song or a Bob Dylan song or a Costello song is cool in its own right. Bands cover songs all the time and change little from the original, yet it can be immensely enjoyable. Unless its Green Day covering the Ramones or Oasis covering the Beatles, because they already sound the same. The majority of cover music is not changed substantially.

Nobody Likes You goes to 3/4 I wouldn't put it past Biffy to do a Green Day cover at some point. They seem to like going on about them, anyway! They don't have to be massively changed, and I do find it cool to hear Billie singing other people's songs, but... I dunno. With the covers of punk songs they've done in the studio (eg I Fought The Law), they just sound the same but too shiny and with all the edge taken off. I must admit We Are The Champions is good, though. I'd be more interested if they did songs that have a bit more going on to start with and they reinterpret it to fit their style.
Pied Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 Another thing: I consider Fuck Time as Green Day covering Foxboro Hot Tubs. I mean, it was their song to begin with, even though I've heard some say that it is called "It's Fuck Time," but all and all, what difference does it make? Same exact song, yet slightly different title; and still, it's there own song. I beg to differ.
Z J Posted October 24, 2013 Posted October 24, 2013 After listening to "Long Time Gone" and rooting around through some stuff from the rock/folk genre, I think would be amazing if Billie took a shine to performing music with the types of themes folk music focuses on (not necessarily switching GD into being a rock/folk band, of course!) I would love to see him tackle this sort of heavier material in a mature, thoughtful way, but with the edge that he brings to the majority of his song-writing. He can't be a rebel forever, right? as long as it doesn't turn in to some Mumford and Sons bullshit. I can handle a more James Taylor-esque storyteller style from Billie. Brutal Love was kind of step in that direction. He showed a good voice on the track and I think I'd enjoy it more if he wrote some material. Did not, in my wildest dreams, think I'd be discussing Billie's future prospects for being a folk-singer 24 hours ago.
munns6691 Posted October 24, 2013 Posted October 24, 2013 Love Green Day and love Billie but what really grinds my gears is the fact he doesn't know all the words to his songs anymore. I know every word, so should he. Then we would/could get more rare songs live.Love Green Day and love Billie but what really grinds my gears is the fact he doesn't know all the words to his songs anymore. kilimacory Posted October 24, 2013 Posted October 24, 2013 Nightlife is shit. Extraordinary Girl is subpar. This tour needed better lights and pyro, especially during Brutal Love (which is, IMO, one of the best songs on the trilogy). If they're gonna close with that, they need to do something more extravagant. Also I think a lot of the trilogy is weak lyrically. The lyrics are worn out metaphors and overused phrases. I love the trilogy, but it doesn't feel too deep or new most of the time.
DookieLukie Posted October 24, 2013 Posted October 24, 2013 At least on JOS they changed the time signature I'm just waiting for that beautiful day when Biffy Clyro do a Green Day cover. Alright buster boy. Now we're strong internet buds and all, but all the Green Day hate is getting kind of repetitive. Green Day may no be the most complex and intricate band to play music, but they make darn good music, especially given the genre they specialize in. I know you have a boner for Biffy Clyro, but Green Day is far more influential than that band will ever be. Not saying which is better, this is just historical reflection. Just lay off a bit, ok?

I only mentioned Biffy Clyro in that post because Green Day were one of their favourite bands growing up. All three members of Biffy saw Green Day on their Kerplunk tour for fuck sake. It'd be interesting as to what song they'd pick, because it'd almost definitely be an old school song. As for the whole music thing, yes, Green Day make good music. Yes, they're the band that I've listened to longest, have spent a fair amount of money going to see, and have obsessed over for almost a decade. Does that mean I can't take them to task from time to time? Absolutely not. And I couldn't give a flying fuck who is more influential. Elvis and the Sex Pistols are far more influential than Green Day will ever be, and they're both shit. Influential doesn't mean good.

While I do agree with this, it wouldn't be that difficult for them to add a few rarer songs to the setlist and ACTUALLY REHEARSE THEM so he did know the words. As for the bulk of the setlist, they've been playing most of that live for at least 9 years now, so he SHOULD be getting the words right. Not that I know what the hell this is about, he's never got any words wrong when I've seen them live Alright buster boy. This may be my favourite post ever. If I may... Brain Stew into St Jimmy live is far, far better than Brain Stew into Jaded ever was, and Brain Stew and Jaded are the worst songs on Insomniac so I hate the fact they're the only songs they consistently play live from that album. And Give Me Novacaine is Tre's best recorded drum performance. So there.

And Give Me Novacaine is Tre's best recorded drum performance. So there. Tight Wad Hill I do love Tré's drumming on GMN. The intro is almost lazily powerful, and perfectly suits the acoustic guitar perfectly, before descending into the cymbal smashfest that is typical of his style. I was going to bring up 16, but then I remembered he didn't record that, nor is the studio version anywhere near as good as the live ones Why Novacaine? I always thought Homecoming and St. Jimmy were considered better technically speaking, but then I'm no drummer so I don't know. Give me a second, I'll go ask my brother. He can play every Green Day song on drums, he'll know
Spike Posted October 24, 2013 Posted October 24, 2013 Why Novacaine? I always thought Homecoming and St. Jimmy were considered better technically speaking, but then I'm no drummer so I don't know. Homecoming is fantastic in places, I don't know how The Death Of St Jimmy manages to hang together at all, it's just perfect chaos. There are plenty of songs far more complicated than Homecoming or Novacaine, most of Dookie and Insomniac are pretty nuts. But I just love how Novacaine seems to be kind of lazy and intense at the same time, the juxtaposition of the style and actual drum sound work really well and fit the song perfectly, and the playing is just absolutely solid. I actually think restrained Tre is a better drummer than wild animal Tre. Tight Wad Hill I do love Tré's drumming on GMN. The intro is almost lazily powerful, and perfectly suits the acoustic guitar perfectly, before descending into the cymbal smashfest that is typical of his style. I can deal with Tight Wad Hill, at least it's not criminally overplayed. Yeah, exactly! It's just perfect all round, really.

My brother says any one of Haushinka, Panic Song, or Reject are his best technically. But live 16 beats everything.

Come on now I forget the words to my own songs sometimes. That said, I don't sing them in the studio, I just write them. But yeah, if they're planning on playing them live it's kind of a requirement to go over the songs a few times before going on tour!

Yeah haushinka is beast. I love the intro to Are We the Waiting. Not the playing itself, cos there is nothing complicated to it, but the over all sound - when it comes up on my iPod on shuffle, it gets me every time because it is such a pounding beat.
Antonium2200 Posted October 24, 2013 Posted October 24, 2013 Really? I haven't seen much hate for it on here. Personally, I love it. If you go on YouTube or some places in real life, you'll see a lot of people dislike it. Oh, but then again. That's YouTube.
