Carrot Posted October 11, 2013 Posted October 11, 2013 im not too sure how unpopular this is, but tightwad hill, for me, definitely is on the top 10 of best green day songs. no doubt about it
munns6691 Posted October 11, 2013 Posted October 11, 2013 In the music business every rips off and gets ripped off. Only so many words can be written. Same goes for melodies and music tunes. I listen to the trilogy just as much as any other CD & I listen to at least 1 GD CD each day because I travel a lot. I don't skip any songs & Uno is my least favourite and Dos or Tre is my favourite depending on my mood (unpopular). I have said before that I believe the trilogy turned out exactly as the band planned. My question to the people on the forum who dislike the trilogy or think there at too many fillers - would you like the direction/sound/style/lyrics if they had put out 1 solid album. Sorry that has probably been asked before. & to the post above Lady Cobra is awesome I would love to see it live It totally depends on what songs were included. If they went 14 songs including: 1.Brutal Love, 2.Missing You, 3.Let Yourself Go, 4.Lazy Bones, 5. 8th Ave Serenade, 6.99 Revolutions, 7.Stay The Night 8.Rusty James 9. Sweet 16 10. Loss of Control 11. Oh Love 12. X-Kid 13. Sex, Drugs and Violence
Z J Posted October 11, 2013 Posted October 11, 2013 Is that suspension notice at the top related to the multiple gifs directed at one comment? If yes, lol. Super touchy admins If not, carry on. I can't think of any way in my mind that anyone could ever rate anything higher than American Idiot. Especially dos. American Idiot is so far and beyond anything they've ever done. It's dynamic and it's lyrics are just powerful. Also, Kerplunk is really starting to grow on me. Once you get used to that sound, it's pretty damn good, especially since it was made by a bunch of college-aged kids.

Z J Posted October 11, 2013 Posted October 11, 2013 Amy just loses me at "Amy pleeeeasssrreeeereeeeeee dont goooooooooo" could have been a much better line there. I realize the lyrical complexity is not exactly high in this song, especially in the chorus. But there's something about it. The way I hear the song is Billie is almost talking to himself. Or he sees himself in Amy Whinehouse and he doesn't want to see himself slip away. Amy reminds me of those fairly simple old classic "rock" songs from the 60's. It seems like something that the Beatles would've written in their early days. "Do you want to be a friend of mine" just gives off that vibe I guess I really can't explain it. Sorry I must have missed the post - where is the post about Dos higher than AI hermione on page 265

Yeah I can see that. I've always believed in a separation between favourite and best. AI is the best. Idk exactly what she means.

It was something to do with a status update as far as I know. I rate Insomniac over American Idiot, but that's mainly driven by the feel of it and bass work. American Idiot is close second, it's just utter genius. Especially Homecoming, that alone makes the album. I doubt anything they'll ever do again could touch it, certainly not Dos. Have you heard the 2012 remaster of American Idiot? Subtle differences, but it blows the original release out of the water.

This isn't an unpopular opinion but you guys obviously play guitar - I don't - do you think you look differently at albums then say me who just listens to them cause I like what I hear

I can't help but look at everything on a technical level. That's not to say simple stuff doesn't sound good, I just notice a lot more of what's going on than I might, like different layers of guitar playing the same part, and subtle differences in tone etc. It's weird because sometimes I end up listening to individual instruments in a song and blanking the rest of the song out. Which can be annoying sometimes, I still can't listen to East 12th Street without only hearing the bass!

Spike Posted October 11, 2013 Posted October 11, 2013 How did you hear the remaster? I didn't even know there was one.. It wasn't released officially, it's available on HDTracks, along with 21st Century Breakdown and the trilogy. You have go Google search them though because the search function on the website doesn't work. Just a catch, it's only available in the USA, I got a friend in Chicago to buy it for me. https://www.hdtracks.com/index.php?file=catalogdetail&valbum_code=HX093624947301
WhiteTim Posted October 11, 2013 Posted October 11, 2013 If you can't get the "hdtracks" (which was affected by loudness) get the vinyl as its the same mix

I rate AI extremely highly as well anyway, there's about 6 of their albums I'd have trouble giving anything but a 10/10 to and AI is one of them.
fromdecimateddreams Posted October 11, 2013 Posted October 11, 2013 This isn't an unpopular opinion but you guys obviously play guitar - I don't - do you think you look differently at albums then say me who just listens to them cause I like what I hear I think I do sometimes. I try not to since sometimes viewing something in such a technical way kind of ends up... not really "ruining" it, but it definitely makes it less spectacular than you thought it was before now that you're able to see all the little imperfections. But listening to it cause you like what you hear is definitely the best way to go about it, cause it's just pure enjoyment and that's the greatest.
Z J Posted October 12, 2013 Posted October 12, 2013 I don't really listen to technical things in songs, at least intentionally. Sometimes certain instruments are just sticking out. Like right now the when I listen to Welcome To Paradise, I find myself listening to only Tre's drums and the actual singing in between the fills is just noise. I have heard the Homecoming HD version. Although I've never really been an audio junky. For me, Insomniac is just not quite on the level of AI because the songs are mostly so similar in structure. You don't get the variety that you do in AI. I love Insomniac though, and ironically enough I sometimes fall asleep to that album. I suppose it comes down to what you value more. In my eyes, Insomniac was a masterful punk album, but even the best 3 minute punk song will never be on the level of something like Jesus of Suburbia or Homecoming. I think it's possible that they could surpass AI musically. It's highly unlikely. Lyrically, it's almost un-toppable (that's a word, maybe). The thing is AI was presented to us in an era where there were important things to say and issues to speak out about, and Green Day said them. It adds a whole new dimension to the album. I can't even think of a type of album or a scenario where it gets topped. Nothing realistic anyway

Honestly, aside from American Idiot and Holiday it's not overlly political. It's more about the real world in general than politics.

Honestly, aside from American Idiot and Holiday it's not overlly political. It's more about the real world in general than politics. yeah I said that. And Jesus of Suburbia has social commentary in it as do some b-sides. The album is made more important because of it. Hell yeah bugs me when folks say AI is over political when its really not it's a social commentary. And that makes it political in nature, beyond just Holiday and American Idiot. Warning was the same way, minus the same number of awesome songs

Warning was the same way, minus the same number of awesome songs I wasn't saying AI not a political but its not over the top political as other than AI or Holiday someone who doesn't care for politics would get turned off on it like my friend hates hearing political songs but loves AI (tho she deleted AI/Holiday from her playlist) I'm just saying AI isn't stuffing politic down peoples throat like some people believe
fromdecimateddreams Posted October 12, 2013 Posted October 12, 2013 ^^ I totally agree. I just feel like so many people that aren't huge GD fans, people who like only a few songs and generally don't listen to their albums all the way through, automatically think that AI is this huge ball of flaming political anger and commentary just because of the title and two of the most popular singles from it. If more people took the time to listen to it all the way through and take it all into perspective, they'd realize that it's complete genius and about so much more than just "bashing government" (or in Holiday's case, being anti-war).
Spoopy Doo Posted October 13, 2013 Posted October 13, 2013 I like 21st Century Breakdown just a smidge more than American Idiot. Just a little tiny smidge.
WhiteTim Posted October 13, 2013 Posted October 13, 2013 I like 21st Century Breakdown just a smidge more than American Idiot. Just a little tiny smidge. Same here I loved all of 21st way before I loved all of AI

Your friend must be a republican
WhiteTim Posted October 13, 2013 Posted October 13, 2013 alright I see you, I misinterpreted it I think. Your friend must be a republican No she's a cynic like I am (we believe it doesn't matter what party is president he's just a fall guy congress are the real ones in power and we're all fucked) she just doesn't care to hear songs about politics she listens to music for enjoyment
