Unpopular Green Day Opinions

1. I'm sick of this Mike lead singer thing. Mike chose Billlie to sing, mike did not want to, nor is fit for Green Day's style to sing. He's great at what he does.

2. Nice Guys Finish Last is one of my more liked songs off Nimrod.

Just because another member of the band takes lead vocals for a song doesn't automatically change the entire sound of the band. Governator is still very obviously a Green Day song, and I when I listened to it for the first few times without paying attention to it I actually didn't even realise it was Mike singing.

While it is true that Billie's voice is a big part of the Green Day "brand", there's a lot more to them than that, and the fact that fans might not like end result is clearly not an issue for them, after the Trilogy. This is actually a huge problem I have with Green Day, they so willingly constrict themselves to such a limited song formula. Maybe Mike taking lead vocals on a few songs on their next album would give Billie a kick on the ass, or inspire him to try something different whilst writing songs.

i'm not saying it changes their entire sound, but it just won't seem right at all to a lot of fans. sure, some will like it, but a lot won't. i love the trilogy, sure it's different to what they've done in the past, but so was American Idiot when that came out, it was a whole new direction. Mike's a great vocalist, he has a very distinct sound. as does Billie. they compliment each other perfectly.

also how the hell did you not realise that was Mike or more to the point, how the hell did you think it was Billie? they're completely different.

i think after the whole iHeart/rehab situation, Billie has got a whole new focus. the Trilogy, we can all agree, was his 'i'm fucked up and know it but can acknowledge i need help and i'll share that feeling in a very subtle way'. that was long but that's the Trilogy in a nutshell. Lazy Bones is the most perfect example of that when looking at the Trilogy. it shows that he knows he needs help, but he doesn't know what to do, he's in far too deep.. now he has a new life, a chance to start a new chapter and more than likely, knowing his writing style, it'll show through that. if there's one thing we know about Billie, it's that he writes from the heart. i think whatever he decides to do next will be a huge change, a total flipside to the Trilogy. which could be good or bad, we don't know until it comes out, if it comes out.

ok this went kind of off-topic and rant-ish but you know what i'm like & i hope you get what i mean :P

The Trilogy didn't seem right to a lot of fans either, jussayin :P

And I didn't listen to it too closely, I just assumed it was Billie singing in his low growly voice or something.

I have no idea what to say to that clusterfuck of a paragraph, only that I hope Mike gets a proper showing on the next album, and that GD do something genuinely different.

Maybe they should do an album with Mike singing lead under a different band name :P

It's called Money Money 2020 under the name The Network.

I meant an album of real music ;)

Does anyone else wish they'd put "Espionage" on Nimrod. instead of "Last Ride In"?

I do love Espionage, it's one of my favourite instrumentals generally. And I'm not much of a fan of Last Ride In, I find it pretty boring. But I do think it breaks Nimrod up well, it's a necessary rest between Uptight and Jinx. It also fits in with the tone of them experimenting with different styles on the album. But as I say, I do prefer Espionage individually, I'd never listen to Last Ride In without it being part of listening to the album in full.

Nimrod was released in 1997, Espionage was released on the soundtrack of Austin Powers in 1999. Impossible :P

But it was a b-side to "Hitchin' a Ride"...

It was?! Learn something new everyday, I thought they recorded it specially for Austin Powers.

I think that Tre is started losing his drums skills... Also, Tre Cool is really dumb nickname.

I agree about it being a silly nickname! But losing his drum skills? Really? What makes you say that?

Nah, if anything he's tighter than ever. Missing You has a lovely drum solo too. I just think he's very restricted by Billie's songwriting style.

Yeah, this is the Unpopular Opinions thread not an Insomniac and Dookie ranking thread (and please don't make one of those, we don't like threads that are just lists of songs and no discussion). Let's not do this.

but if our view of the songs differs....our list could be considered unpopular? No? The list is an opinion that is unpopular. Plus lists can easily inspire the discussion you desire. For example, how could anyone enjoy Having A Blast so much that they put it first? Blasphemy

He does a lot with the little space he's given. His drum fills have always been and still are great.

And I know I've said it before but I'll go at it again. Mike isn't that great of a lead singer. He's a brilliant backing vocalist. But he is not a lead singer. Governator is hardly him even singing, it's shouting. There isn't much depth in his voice outside the studio. He would make a good lead singer for a punk band because vocals are usually the last thing thought of with a punk band it seems.

And I know the easy reply is "well Billie does quite a bit of shouting nowadays" but the difference between him and Mike is Billie has it in him to be a good vocalist. Just look at his broadway stint and the concerts with his band during the time. Or even him on Brutal Love or something recently.

To me there is a difference between a good lead singer and a good punk front man.

What direction are you hoping they go in? There isn't much else to cover within reason.

1. :o Having A Blast is bitchin'.

2. Yep. And there's a lot more to being a good drummer than wild fills. He's got a lot tighter. I'd go so far as to say BOBD is one of his best drum tracks on a technical level, and look how basic that is.

3. Well yeah. Elton John is a great singer. He wouldn't be a good punk front man, on any level. I do think Mike could make a good punk frontman in a different band, it wouldn't work for Green Day. But if they were in the same kind of vain as, say, The Distillers or Circle Jerks, why not?

I don't have a technical ear for drumming all I really notice for the most part are fills, which I enjoy.

And yes I was basically saying Mike is not a good lead singer but he would be a fine punk front man and he's a great back up singer

Well yeah, and Tre is obviously an animal with his fills at times!

Ah ok, I misread what you were saying then. And I agree!

Maybe take some inspiration from The Clash and bring in some reggae/ska elements to their sound, or continue along their rock n roll progression to become something akin to The Living End. Or just generally do something that actually pleasantly surprises me. There were plenty of surprises on the Trilogy, not many of them very good.

So is Mike, though I don't know if that is down to Billie or the whole band's way of songwriting.

Very much agreed. It's been nearly 20 years since Mike's had a chance to show off his skills.

He does not get to show off his drumming skills because of Billie Joe. He can't sing anything with off beats. So Tre cant show off his drumming skills .
