fromdecimateddreams Posted September 29, 2013 Posted September 29, 2013 Heretic! In all seriousness, I just can't understand the dislike several forum members here have for "Longview". That bass... The bass is really the only thing I like about Longview, it's awesome. But just the general feel and beat of the song kind of turns me off. The way the lyrics are sung and the whole rhythm of it all is just kind of awkward to me, I guess.
munns6691 Posted September 29, 2013 Posted September 29, 2013 Insomniac is actually one of my lowest ranked Green Day albums, just because it doesn't have those 3-4 standout songs to me. Longview is, to me, in the bottom of Dookie songs. In order for me its: Basket Case, Burnout, She, Coming Clean, Pulling Teeth, Having a Blast, Welcome to Paradise, Chump, Emenius Sleepus, Longview, When I Come Around, F.O.D, In The End, and Sassafras Roots.

Hermione Posted September 29, 2013 Posted September 29, 2013 Yeah, this is the Unpopular Opinions thread not an Insomniac and Dookie ranking thread (and please don't make one of those, we don't like threads that are just lists of songs and no discussion). Let's not do this.
Anaïs. Posted September 29, 2013 Posted September 29, 2013 Apologies. Back to unpopular opinions: I really wish Mike would write/co-write more songs. "J.A.R." is one of their best early songs, lyrically, and "Panic Song" is amazing. And, of course, "Nobody Likes You" is the most noticeable leitmotif of AI. Especially since BJA's writing hasn't been up to snuff as of late, I think it'd be awesome if Mike's lyrical abilities had more time to shine.

I disagree about Billie's writing but I'd love some more Mike songs too. Emenius Sleepus is probably my favourite, and one of my favourites on Dookie. I remember a few years ago there was an interview where Billie talked about how much he admires Mike's writing and said he'd love it if he wrote more so I guess the door's open for him, just have to hope he's inspired to do it.
Spike Posted September 29, 2013 Posted September 29, 2013 Sorry Hermione! Here's an unpopular opinion: Nice Guys Finish Last is the most annoying and pointless Green Day song ever.

Don't think you can say that now that "Nightlife" exists, mate. I will say that it shouldn't have been a single--I would've much rather seen "Haushinka" or "Scattered" fill that role.

I will say that it shouldn't have been a single--I would've much rather seen "Haushinka" or "Scattered" fill that role. The saving grace of Nightlife is that at least it's something different! Nice Guys is just kind of boring, it'd be better with more edgy production, but that said I don't even like it live. The studio version just doesn't seem to have the balls the lyrics require, if that makes sense.
Guest Posted September 29, 2013 Posted September 29, 2013 Scumbag, JAR, and Ha Ha You're Dead not being album tracks is evidence enough that there is a bias against Mike's songwriting in Green Day

Everything he's written I've loved. Emenius Sleepus, Ha Ha You're Dead, JAR, Scumbag, and Panic Song are all amongst my favourite Green Day songs ever. I'd love for Mike to play a larger role in the songwriting process, but that sadly doesn't seem likely anytime soon.

Spike Posted September 29, 2013 Posted September 29, 2013 Mike's an awesome songwriter, I consistently really like everything I've ever heard. He does need to do more. Does anyone know how much songwriting he does for the Frustrators? Cos Achtung Jackass is a sweet record. And more to the point - Mike needs to sing lead more! He's got a fantastic voice. Also, it'd be good to hear more Tre stuff. When he takes it seriously like on Rock n Roll Girlfriend he's a badass songwriter.
Guest Posted September 29, 2013 Posted September 29, 2013 Mike hasn't got the kind of voice that would work for GD. he's more of a true punk singer, where-as Billie is very melodic and soft (normally, anyway). so i just can't imagine anyone with the gruff punk tone to sing for GD, just wouldn't seem right.

Yeah, I see what you mean. It does have a massive impact when he takes the lead for GD though, like the line in my sig, it compliments Billie so well. Maybe they should do an album with Mike singing lead under a different band name That said, it's not like Mike's voice is wasted, his backing vocals (both the arrangements and vocals themselves) are amongst the best in the industry.
Guest Posted September 29, 2013 Posted September 29, 2013 watch?v=PiXKgNJ9zXQ Sounds alright to me, to be honest. and there's a reason that song is a b-side. i love it, but the vocals just don't fit GDs image anymore not since AI, anyway. before that, sure.

The song is a b-side because it doesn't fit with AI's narrative. And because of the blatant bias against any song Mike plays a large part in
Guest Posted September 29, 2013 Posted September 29, 2013 The song is a b-side because it doesn't fit with AI's narrative. And because of the blatant bias against any song Mike plays a large part in i don't think it's a bias against Mike, more of a 'your voice doesn't fit'. like Tom said, Mikes vocals work perfectly the way they are. if he were to sing lead on songs, it just wouldn't sound like GD anymore to me, and possibly to a lot of other fans. more casual listeners and even dedicated fans know GD by the vocals, Billies voice is what a lot of people fell in love with & caused them to become fans of the band.

Just because another member of the band takes lead vocals for a song doesn't automatically change the entire sound of the band. Governator is still very obviously a Green Day song, and I when I listened to it for the first few times without paying attention to it I actually didn't even realise it was Mike singing. While it is true that Billie's voice is a big part of the Green Day "brand", there's a lot more to them than that, and the fact that fans might not like end result is clearly not an issue for them, after the Trilogy. This is actually a huge problem I have with Green Day, they so willingly constrict themselves to such a limited song formula. Maybe Mike taking lead vocals on a few songs on their next album would give Billie a kick on the ass, or inspire him to try something different whilst writing songs.
Spike Posted September 29, 2013 Posted September 29, 2013 Even one or two songs per album would make a real difference, like the Manics have been doing with Nicky recently. Although that's a stupid idea because Nicky can't sing, but whatever. Governator was a b side because they realised they don't have enough b sides and they wanted to keep Miley happy.
