WhiteTim Posted September 26, 2013 Posted September 26, 2013 Dookie would have been popular without Nirvana. Also, Green Day is incredibly underrated in music history, compared to old bands. Lmao not as popular as they got
munns6691 Posted September 26, 2013 Posted September 26, 2013 Lmao not as popular as they got Why? How do you know that? Because you are a fan of Nirvana you know how the world works? Dookie sold just as many albums as Nevermind did and American Idiot outsold any other Nirvana album by far.
Guest Posted September 26, 2013 Posted September 26, 2013 Dookie sold just as many albums as Nevermind did and American Idiot outsold any other Nirvana album by far. Since when has Dookie sold 30 million copies? Also, In Utero has sold 1 million more copies than AI.
Cath Posted September 26, 2013 Posted September 26, 2013 dammit people stop comparing nirvana to green day these are two different bands. it's not worth it cause in the end you're gonna stick to your own opinions
munns6691 Posted September 26, 2013 Posted September 26, 2013 Since when has Dookie sold 30 million copies? Also, In Utero has sold 1 million more copies than AI. A CD from 1993 is going to appear to sell more copiea than one in 2004
Guest Posted September 26, 2013 Posted September 26, 2013 A CD from 1993 is going to appear to sell more copiea than one in 2004 That wasn't what you said though.
Spike Posted September 26, 2013 Posted September 26, 2013 The amount of people that seem to think commercial success is a sure fire indicator of the quality of music amuses me.

Dookie is at 20 Nevermind has sold nearly 30 million AI is at 16 so no they haven't outsold it Its one thing to not be a fan of Nirvana but to dismiss their history is a whole other things
@thelibrary Posted September 27, 2013 Posted September 27, 2013 Yes, as is Worry Rock Yes yes yes yes yes love this song my favorite off of Nimrod Worry Rock is amazing <3
fromdecimateddreams Posted September 27, 2013 Posted September 27, 2013 I feel like I've said this a billion times in this thread, but the amount of albums a band sells does NOT define the quality of their music. Everyone has a different opinion on what's a great album and what isn't. Numbers are not everything. Who cares how many copies an album has sold. A lot of times people just buy something because they're curious about it, much like people watch a viral youtube video because they're curious. It doesn't mean the thing is good, it just means it stirred up interest.

No where did I say album sales are what makes a better album But the dude said Green Day has done more in music history than Nirvana which is not the case
fromdecimateddreams Posted September 27, 2013 Posted September 27, 2013 No where did I say album sales are what makes a better album But the dude said Green Day has done more in music history than Nirvana which is not the case It just strikes me a little funny that you seem to bring up album sales in almost every debate-type conversation about an album in here. And really, who cares who has more music history. Last time I checked, this forum wasn't about Nirvana.

And really, who cares who has more music history. Last time I checked, this forum wasn't about Nirvana. Considering it wasn't me who brought up music history in the first place I was simply responding... And yes I mention album sales cause it does play a part of a band's popularity if you disagree then you have absolutely ZERO understanding on simple knowledge of life but no where have I ever said album sales equals better albums if you think I did show me where...
fromdecimateddreams Posted September 27, 2013 Posted September 27, 2013 Considering it wasn't me who brought up music history first please fuck off... And yes I mention album sales cause it does play a part of a band's popularity if you disagree then you have absolutely ZERO understanding on simple knowledge of life but no where have I ever said album sales equals better albums if you think I did show me where... Telling someone to fuck off, classy. Learn some respect, man. And I never said it doesn't play a part in their popularity, I'm simply saying they're not everything. The way you talk about album sales makes it sound like album sales = legendary or not legendary, which isn't true. There is a such thing as being influential without making tons of money. I'll leave it at that. Have a nice day.

Again show me where I said album sales equals legendary either show me where I said that or stop putting words in my posts... and I have never said anything about making money (you do know album sales have nothing to do with money...) All I'm saying is can't downplay a group simply cause you don't like them for someone to say Green Day has made more history than Nirvana is simply idiotic and wrong Nirvana is a legendary group as is GD to say otherwise is just dumb... Have a good day
Spike Posted September 27, 2013 Posted September 27, 2013 The thing is, album sales DO equal legendary albums, which is a shame. Eagles' Greatest Hits, The Bodyguard Soundtrack, Shania Twain's Come On Over... Hardly musical masterpieces but everyone knows what they are. But then there's Dark Side Of The Moon, Thriller and Rumors, which are legendary AND musical genius. The two are mutually exclusive. As for the Nirvana issue - I really don't like them, but their music is put together reasonably well, and they came along at the right time with the right attitude to be very influential. It'd be silly to say they aren't historically significant, but I still find them dull and not particularly listenable. Same with The Beatles really
Z J Posted September 27, 2013 Posted September 27, 2013 In the context of the musical scene in the 90's, it seemed Green Day existed more in spite of Nirvana rather than because of them, at least that's how I see it. Also since we're talking about these two bands, anyone here listen to Christie Road and hear the guitar to Smells Like Teen Spirit? Christie Road was released first if I'm not mistaken. Probably been said before.

Z J Posted September 27, 2013 Posted September 27, 2013 Smells Like Teen Spirit came out in 1991 Christie Road 1992 yeah I realized I was thinking Christie Road was on 39/Smooth for some reason. Damnit. Oh well the similarity isn't cool that way
WhiteTim Posted September 27, 2013 Posted September 27, 2013 yeah I realized I was thinking Christie Road was on 39/Smooth for some reason. Damnit. Oh well the similarity isn't cool that way Probally thought 39 cause the production not that much different between 39 and Kerplunk Back to the topic I never cared much for 1039 (I know tman its 39 Smooth and Slappy and 1000 Hours but I was introduced to them as 1039) other than a handful of tracks I just don't care for it music wise

I know the production puts a lot of people off, but it's not even that I don't like. In terms of good songs there's only really Going To Pasalacqua, The Judge's Daughter, 409 and Dry Ice, and half of them are only good for the solos. It's an album (or collection of EPs, whatever) that shows the band's potential rather than actual good songs.

Not many 18 year olds write songs that they can still perform when they're 40 and have them still apply. But yes, the quality of the album is a detriment for sure. Probably at the bottom as far as my favorite GD albums go.

I like a lot of the lyrics on it The production has no concern as I like a lot of very low budget albums (hell I prefer unmixed or unmastered music)
SmoothedOut Posted September 27, 2013 Posted September 27, 2013 The only similarity I see in Christie Road's bridge riff and Smells Like Teen Spirit's riff is the strumming...
