Unpopular Green Day Opinions

You mean 'here's to all god's losers...' and 'it's not considered stealing...'? Again I see a (very) slight similarity with the vocal melody, but the chords are completely different.

No, I meant the choruses of Amy and Shoplifter.

my head just exploded.

Because I listened to the song? I dunno, you hear these things. Green Day do this all the time. Like on their 1,039, 16, Paper Lanterns, and The Judge's Daughter all use the same chord progression, just with a different key and rhythm.

having a number one album doesn't mean much. uno would've been number 1 if no doubt hadn't put an album out on the same day and god knows it still wasn't a success. come back when another rock band sells 16 million copies of an album like green day did with ai, or when one of those bands has a song topping both the mainstream and rock charts like boulevard of broken dreams. you can't compare fucking avenged sevenfold to the success of american idiot, that's just stupid.

Yep. If I remember correctly, Only By The Night by Kings of fucking Leon has outsold American Idiot, but that doesn't mean anyone is going to remember it. Sales don't equate to long term success when it comes to rock, the majority of the time.

Even I can see that one!

I doubt that is exclusive to green day. thinking about it, have you seen the Axis of Awesome's Four Chord Song? That basically explores this kinda thing.

Pretty sure every song by Blink 182 has that same I - V - VI - IV chord progression :P

Nothing wrong with it as long as you can make the songs sound different.

Yeah, I've seen it. I think it's just a lot more obvious with Green Day because they rarely change up the style, tone, or structure of songs.

Actually there are hundreds of Green Day songs with that chord progression, kinda like a triangle of power chords. probably more songs with that than with the progression that A of A used in that song.

The begining of Dirty Rotten Bastards is a mix of Shoplifter and The Pedestrian

You mean the "yeah yeah yeah" bit? Because that's just lifted straight from Carmen.

No the first verse

Also, how can people not like American Eulogy? That's like not liking Letterbomb..

Okay, By The Way 13+ millions and Stadium Arcadium 9+ by RHCP, Hybrid Theory 24m, Meteora 16m by Linkin Park. Coldplay had even more copies sold and this is from top of my head. I'm not saying that they are better then GD but like I said it's not imposible for a Rock Band (okay Coldplay maybe isn't  ) to sell a lot of copies.

American Idiot was something more special than just a rock album that sold millions of copies... This album had that "something". Remember, many of us would not be here if it was not for this album. The only sure thing is that American Idiot, changed many lives (including me). Many albums sell millions of copies, but just a few are changing lives and American Idiot is one of them. :)

Maybe someone else found Stadium Arcadium life changing?

Personally no.

okay, but when were rhcp and linkin park a fucking cultural phenomenon? green day were EVERYWHERE in 2005. the biggest band in the world. but imo american idiot had a huge impact on making rock music popular again.

AI wasn't a cultural phenomenon tho... stop overhyping it

What exactly has been a cultural phenomenon lately in music?

Posted

I just started quoting "Homecoming" in my biology class today, and almost everyone else started singing along. I can't think of another album that's a decade old that would have that happen with a non-single track. So yeah, I have to agree with AI's being a cultural phenomenon.

i don't know, maybe it was just because i was 13-14 at the time but i didn't know one single person who didn't own american idiot. they were on tv and the radio constantly, even fucking claire's was selling green day merch. i'm not overhyping anything.

i can't even remember what this argument was about in the first place. all i was trying to say was i can't remember a rock album in the past ten years that's had the same impact that ai did.

they were seriously EVERYWHERE. and everyone knew who they were and knew a song off american idiot.

they were definitely the biggest band in the world in 2004/2005 so i totally agree with you about that album.

people went nuts over them.

Apart of being a cultural phenomenon also means it played a role in changing music and change the way music business worked and it failed that on both angles as it did NOTHING new for music...

How were GD the biggest band when Coldplay OUTSOLD AI and sold more concert tickets than GD did in 2004/2005?

Cultural phenomenon, maybe not. Super influential in the music industry, maybe not. Sure, American Idiot didn't change the culture of rock music and make a huge impact in that respect, but you can't deny that it was huge for a reason, and it wasn't just the catchy tunes. It made people think (which really, how much popular modern music does that?), it rose some political awareness with the title track, and really made an impact on people's lives personally rather than in business which you seem to only be focusing on right now.

i'm just telling it like it is.

coldplay were not as big here as green day were back then. maybe where you are they were, but not here.

I think apart of the business side cause I worked in the business for nearly 15 years before I retired and moved to film so I do think more on business side than most here would do

I dunno where you guys were, but from 2004-6 there was only one band that was big and wasn't fuckin' Coldplay.

Album sales don't mean a huge amount for culture if the only people buying them are middle class vegans in their mid thirties.

You can't the biggest band when you don't sell as many records or sell out/profit on tours more than another band...
