WhiteTim Posted September 8, 2013 Posted September 8, 2013 Tre got a lot better on drums from 1039 to Kerplunk
DookieLukie Posted September 8, 2013 Posted September 8, 2013 Tre got a lot better on drums from 1039 to Kerplunk Tre didn't play drums on those albums, man ha
Anaïs. Posted September 8, 2013 Posted September 8, 2013 They're all candidates. But the good outweighs the bad with the album, to me. Why the hate for "Horseshoes"? I really like the song; it's not my favorite on the album by any means, but certainly not among the worst. Related to this, I think "East Jesus Nowhere" is the best piece of social commentary the band's ever written.
Spike Posted September 8, 2013 Posted September 8, 2013 The 2012 remaster of Homecoming is clearly not only the best Green Day song ever, but the best thing ever written. Holy holy holy fucking shit, they really are the best band in the fucking world. I haven't had a reaction like that to a piece of music since I first heard Holiday in 2004. I can't even describe it, Jesus Christ. I haven't listened to Homecoming for ages until the remaster tonight, and the drop into Nobody Likes You, with the tv noises in the background, sent shivers down my spine. Absolutely fucking mind blowing.
stories and songs Posted September 8, 2013 Posted September 8, 2013 I think 21CB musically and lyrically is absolutely some of the best work they've ever done. I realize it doesn't have a strong storyline, but I find the themes in it to be extremely powerful and masterfully weaved throughout the album (the connection with Know Your Enemy and Restless Heart Syndrome gives me chills every time I listen to it). The album tells a story just through the way the songs relate back to one another. It is character-driven, introspective storytelling. It's brilliant, brilliant songwriting. I also love this album for the fact that one has to listen to it all the way through to get the most impact. It is an album meant to be listened to all at once, and I love that Green Day makes albums like that. Few people do these days. I could go on and on about how wonderful of an album I find 21CB to be. I love it.

Related to this, I think "East Jesus Nowhere" is the best piece of social commentary the band's ever written. I like Horseshoes more than the other two. More or less just didn't feel like debating worst song. As for EJN, I like it a lot. Definitely one of their most important pieces in terms of social commentary. Sometimes they go simple like Minority, well EJN is the other side of the spectrum. If it was on AI it would probably get a lot more respect.
doworkson123123 Posted September 8, 2013 Posted September 8, 2013 i went through a phase where i didn't care for 21cb that much and now i love it again. i don't know why, my taste changes all the time when it comes to green day still hate kye/christian's inferno/see the light tho Completely agree about see the light. Damn that song is bad.

Spike Posted September 8, 2013 Posted September 8, 2013 hmm didn't know they remastered that song. How do I hear this? It's on the album remaster by HDTracks. They've also done the trilogy and 21stCB. Basically the compression is reduced so there's no clipping and far more dynamic range, and in places things have been added that weren't on the original album versions. The levels have also been tweaked so everything is a lot clearer. It's a tad pricey but well worth it if you're into audio quality, or just a general Green Day completist. There are previews if you're not sure. https://www.hdtracks.com/index.php?file=catalogdetail&valbum_code=HD093624947813
Cob Posted September 8, 2013 Posted September 8, 2013 Homecoming is absolutely my favorite Green Day medley. I know JOS gets most of the love, but man, Homecoming just pulls me in. JOS grabbed me, Homecoming pulled me in, and Dookie got me straight up addicted.
Anaïs. Posted September 8, 2013 Posted September 8, 2013 hmm didn't know they remastered that song. How do I hear this? The TV sounds kinda creep me out just because they're so foreign to my listening experience. As for EJN, I like it a lot. Definitely one of their most important pieces in terms of social commentary. Sometimes they go simple like Minority, well EJN is the other side of the spectrum. If it was on AI it would probably get a lot more respect. Minority is amazing too, and contains one of their single best lyrics ("One light, one mind..."). I think the reason I love EJN so much is that I went to a frighteningly fundamentalist private high school whose administration genuinely believed all rock musicians are demon-possessed, homosexuality is an abomination, any fantasy literature is immoral, etc. The song is extremely powerful to me because I know firsthand what the thing it's satirizing looks like in real life.

I love the verses in Minority. The song has a whole new level live
WhiteTim Posted September 8, 2013 Posted September 8, 2013 Are you trolling or what...? Just joking In the Nirvana boards there's a joke that says Dave had gotten better since Bleach (who didn't play on Bleach)

Hermione Posted September 8, 2013 Posted September 8, 2013 To be clear, I really like the album. I'm saying that because it was supposed to be the rock opera that follows AI I expected a story line. I was explaining my reasons for not liking it right away. Now the story isn't really a problem to me.Nah it wasn't supposed to be that. I can't for the life of me think which interviews it was, but at the time it came out they specifically said it wasn't a rock opera, and that the songs just had characters and shared themes rather than a story line you can follow. I guess it was natural for people to expect/assume it would be another rock opera after AI and since it had characters but the band never said they were doing that, so that can be crossed off the list of reasons not to like it right away haha.

I love it. 21CB isn't my favorite album of theirs nor is it perfect, but I totally agree with you. There are some great lyrics sprinkled throughout (I adore BTL in particular). And the thing about listening to it in full coupled with the choice of singles is exactly what I think turned a lot of people off to the album. AI had some great single choices that helped make the album accessible, but aside from the title track, I think the 21CB singles weren't the greatest, particularly KYE. It's a song that sounds a lot better in the context of the album and sounds less hollow when you listen to Restless Heart Syndrome and see its parallels.
SmoothedOut Posted September 8, 2013 Posted September 8, 2013 Tre didn't play drums on those albums, man ha That's Tre drumming on Kerplunk. I really wish the American Idiot Broadway Musical was really just the American Idiot album. I haven't seen the musical. But I thought the songs on American Idiot were just right and just enough to tell the story (we've known so well since it's release). I don't think they should have added any other songs.
HandGrenade39 Posted September 8, 2013 Posted September 8, 2013 I think See The Light is an awesome song it's actually one of my fav of 21CB
Certified Nimrod Posted September 8, 2013 Posted September 8, 2013 Same, it's a perma-skip for me too. Also, the lyrics are so fucking awful on that song especially. Cliché piled upon cliché. "Livin' a cliché..." Well there are lots of topics I want to stick my two cents into. 3. Also, Wow! That's Loud is an awesome song. The middle to end sound like a Green Day jam session. That part is so awesome. I probably wouldn't really like the song if it wasn't for that.

It's a song that sounds a lot better in the context of the album and sounds less hollow when you listen to Restless Heart Syndrome and see its parallels. Yeah, it definitely wasn't an album made for commercial listening, just because it IS such a great album listened all the way through. In context of the album, the songs that may seem weak on their own get a boost from the way they fit in with the rest of the music. I didn't really like their choice of singles, but in this instance, I'm not sure they could've chosen anything better - it just wasn't an album meant for singles. American Idiot similarly sounds best when listened to all at once, but that album also had a lot of songs that sounded awesome as singles, too. Some of my all time favorites came out of 21 CB. Before the Lobotomy, Viva la Gloria (Little Girl), Restless Heart Syndrome, 21st Century Breakdown - there are so many excellent songs on that album. as much as i don't like know your enemy i'm glad it exists just because of that line in restless heart syndrome. ties the whole album together perfectly. It really does tie it together perfectly. You hear the line, "I am my own worst enemy. Know your enemy," and it puts the album in an entirely different light. Brilliant.
Spike Posted September 8, 2013 Posted September 8, 2013 as much as i don't like know your enemy i'm glad it exists just because of that line in restless heart syndrome. ties the whole album together perfectly. I think Restless Heart Syndrome is the best song on the album regardless of the Know Your Enemy link. I think it would take more than that one line to tie the whole album together to be honest, but I do like how Know Your Enemy makes out like the government or whatever is "the enemy" but then Restless Heart Syndrome reveals that people need to worry about themselves just as much.
