Jon Benjamin Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 I think Jesus of Suburbia would've been a way better closer than Brutal Love.
SmoothedOut Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 I love both blink and GD, and I don't really think Jackass is about them. In Riding in Vans with Boys they did seem to have a decent relationship, I think the rivalry was mostly for show, haha. It makes you wonder why they really only have a "decent relationship". I just don't think their personalities click. There's a video of Tom calling Joey and looking for Billie in recent years though. Also, one of the members of Kut U Up joined Green Day onstage and did a staged-dive when they played "Carpe Diem" in one of the secret shows. Interesting. I've always wondered how the Dookie-era Billie Joe, Mike, and Tre would get along with Blink-182 at the time.
Spike Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 I don't even think GD and Blink are even comparable tbh. Yeah they were both pop punk, but they've always been very different musically. Green Day have always been a lot more serious (not in a bad way, as in not all dick jokes etc), and are clearly better musicians (with the exception of the drummers - Tre is awesome but Travis is just... wow). Obviously Billie's voice is very different from Mark and Tom's, and Blink's production has usually been a lot more polished in order to cater to the mainstream. I think, whatever direction either band goes in, Green Day have always been on the more punk side of pop punk, and Blink more on the pop side. For that reason, they're as good as each other at what they do, it's just that what Green Day do is better.
Guest Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 This argument is so pointless, it's all about Sum 41 man.
Guest Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 what i've never understood is why it's fine to like blink 182 but there is like, a major stigma attached to being a green day fan, outside of gdc obviously. i get so much shit for liking green day but everyone who gives me shit likes blink. it makes no sense at all. Probably because blink are seen as a joke act that no one takes seriously, but Green Day are seen as "emo" and "fake punk" that only teenagers like.
Certified Nimrod Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 they edit out "zeig heil" in holiday here. Lol That doesn't even make sense
Guest Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 Lol That doesn't even make sense Songs with Nazi connotations are still frowned upon in case a 70 year old war vet accidentally watches Kerrang. I can see why they did it, doesn't make it any less dumb.

Because apparently it's only possible to like Blink "ironically" therefore you can't be judged for it. Probably because they're seen as a joke act and are more pop orientated. I think Green Day are seen as po faced and whiney by people who only know the more recent singles.
Mar Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 Personally, I feel like re-introducing Dookie to the masses would be a horrible way of getting the band back in the mainstream because they don't make that kind of music anymore. The best way to try and get Green Day back in the mainstream would be to promote the Trilogy more. And while some hardcore Green Day fans hate the Trilogy, it probably would appeal to a lot of teenagers because it's got that light, poppy, "fuck all y'all, I'm throwin' a party!" vibe that the major record labels are marketing like crazy with all the solo pop artists and boy bands. If Green Day still made fast and furious pop punk about masturbating in your bedroom, Dookie would be great to re-introduce. But they don't make that kind of music anymore, so it'd be like false advertising, and anyone who did get into the band because they heard Dookie for the first time would probably be disappointed once they heard the lead single from their recent musical release was "Oh Love." I know this was like two pages ago but whatever. As much as I think it's smart of them to capitalize on the current nostalgia culture, what you said makes sense, too. It would just continue the "Shut up and play the hits" (or "Shut up and play the album we love") culture that a lot of us bitch about as is. While it could help bring new fans into the fold, it could just as easily make people go "See? They don't play this kind of music anymore so that's why they peaked with Dookie." Can't win for losing.
munns6691 Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 Letterbomb should have been a single instead of Jesus of Suburbia. Honestly St. Jimmy, Give Me Novacaine, Lettebomb and Whatsername would all have been singles if spaced out on different records.
The Grouch is Tracy Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 I think "Honestly St. Jimmy" is an awesome name for a song!
Iva Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 This argument is so pointless, it's all about Sum 41 man. You know it's about Busted, so DON'T LIE. WHEN WE TELL LIES WE GO TO HELL. what i've never understood is why it's fine to like blink 182 but there is like, a major stigma attached to being a green day fan, outside of gdc obviously. i get so much shit for liking green day but everyone who gives me shit likes blink. it makes no sense at all. That's something I never understood either. When I was a kid who loved them, I would be told that's not for little girls, that's not for nice children, that's SATANIC and EVIL. The last two are quotes by a friend of my mother's and my paternal grandmother, the first two from various older kids and sexist assholes who were annoyed when I was searching for Green Day in magazines they were selling. Now when I'm an adult who's still into them, people are like OMG THAT'S FOR CHILDREN. YOU SHOULD LISTEN TO MATURE MUSIC.
ThranaM Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 Dirty Rotten Bastards or Brutal Love should be the lead single(s) for the trilogy. Oh Love doesn't fit in at all
Guest Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 Dirty Rotten Bastards or Brutal Love should be the lead single(s) for the trilogy. Oh Love doesn't fit in at all You mean that songs that were on the third and final album should have been the first singles? If anything, Nuclear Family was the ideal lead single. Captures the vibe of Uno, and it's a perfect 3 minute slab of Green Day pop punk.

Guest Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 Well, if they put DrB on Uno it would be amazing as a single Nope, would have been too long for radio play. Same with Brutal Love. They both need at least 2 minutes chopped off them, minimum, for radio play.

Iva Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 Yup, HEIL was a common Nazi greeting and HEIL HITLER was how Nazis would salute Hitler. So, it implies that Dubya = Hitler. I don't see anything shocking enough for censorship. And a 70 year old veteran must've fought in war as a baby? ISN'T THAT CHILD LABOUR?
Nova-Caine Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 People don't know as many songs off 'Dookie' as they think they do, it was great at Brixton but just didn't work for me at Reading. Also GD are way darker than Blink, they have angst and god Blink make me want to hurt people. and prolly shoulda quoted what I was referring to but its late and i'm fucked so sorry :/ x
Guest Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 Also GD are way darker than Blink, they have angst and god Blink make me want to hurt people. blink can be pretty dark too, their self-titled especially. Some tracks off Take Off Your Pants And Jacket too. And don't forget Adam's Song.

Spoopy Doo Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 If anything, Nuclear Family was the ideal lead single. Captures the vibe of Uno, and it's a perfect 3 minute slab of Green Day pop punk. It seems it would do well with the fans, too. I remember around/before the trilogy was announced that people (on YT anyway) seemed to love Nuclear Family. Oh Love as a lead single kind of gives off the vibe that ¡Uno! is kind of all about lust and smex.

Spike Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 The very best thing about Green Day is the backing vocals.
