Eva Posted September 2, 2013 Posted September 2, 2013 I would love for GD to become mainstream again, especially if it were because of Dookie (which is already mainstream essentially). Idk a lot of the people I know don't like GD because of the guy-liner and the emo labels that came with the band but they say they like their old stuff. Re-introducing Dookie to the jaded masses would be a perfect way to show these people that AI/21CB isn't the only side of Green Day. Personally, I feel like re-introducing Dookie to the masses would be a horrible way of getting the band back in the mainstream because they don't make that kind of music anymore. The best way to try and get Green Day back in the mainstream would be to promote the Trilogy more. And while some hardcore Green Day fans hate the Trilogy, it probably would appeal to a lot of teenagers because it's got that light, poppy, "fuck all y'all, I'm throwin' a party!" vibe that the major record labels are marketing like crazy with all the solo pop artists and boy bands. If Green Day still made fast and furious pop punk about masturbating in your bedroom, Dookie would be great to re-introduce. But they don't make that kind of music anymore, so it'd be like false advertising, and anyone who did get into the band because they heard Dookie for the first time would probably be disappointed once they heard the lead single from their recent musical release was "Oh Love."
Iva Posted September 2, 2013 Posted September 2, 2013 I seem to have missed something. Green Day will have been mainstream for 20 years in a couple of months, how can somebody think they aren't?
IlariaIDIOT Posted September 2, 2013 Posted September 2, 2013 When I started to listen Green Day nobody cared about them (I am speaking about my area) Now, everyone likes Green Day and how they are 'alternative' Idk

I've been disappointed by the first release from recent albums myself Oh Love, Know Your Enemy, American Idiot... Hardly the best songs on their respective albums, are they?
Guest Posted September 2, 2013 Posted September 2, 2013 I've been disappointed by the first release from recent albums myself Oh Love, Know Your Enemy, American Idiot... It really captured the zeitgeist of the times, and effectively captured the rage and desperation that flows through the album.
WhiteTim Posted September 2, 2013 Posted September 2, 2013 That's the thing, Dookie is certainly not underground, not with 20 mil copies sold, but in terms of popularity, Green Day pales into insignificance next to band like One Direction, Westlife or even the Beatles or the Stones. In that sense I wouldn't call Dookie exactly mainstream. They are still a mainstream band they will never in life will ever be a underground band again... even if they aren't on top of popularity they are still a mainstream band
The Disappearing Boy Posted September 2, 2013 Posted September 2, 2013 They are still a mainstream band they will never in life will ever be a underground band again... even if they aren't on top of popularity they are still a mainstream band Yeah, I guess that's true.
Spike Posted September 2, 2013 Posted September 2, 2013 I can't fault AI really. It really captured the zeitgeist of the times, and effectively captured the rage and desperation that flows through the album. Well that's a fair point, yeah. It just didn't help that it's especially simple in music terms (even for Green Day), so they got a lot of negative judgements from people who had never heard them before that song. I mean, their loss, but yeah. BOBD would have been a perfect first single, I think. But they did what they did, and it worked, so who am I?

AI caught everyone's interest, and the rest of the singles just got them hooked. Can't argue with the singles from that album. Apart from JOS. That was fucking stupid.

Apart from JOS. That was fucking stupid. So much this ugh JOS is a fantastic song and all, I love it, but making a single was a really dumb move. 9 minute songs just don't work as singles, especially for a band like GD who are known better for shorter and less complex (in a way) songs. Honestly, I think a better move would have been to put Too Much Too Soon on the album and made that into a single, it probably would have done great in comparison to JOS.

Spike Posted September 2, 2013 Posted September 2, 2013 Or y'know, WHATSERNAME Fucking yes! That would have been a great single. I must say I laughed when they did JOS on Top Of The Pops and Billie let the crowd sing "They don't believe in me" and... deathly silence. Not a good choice of single at all, the 6 minute edit sucks and the general public dont have the patience for a 6 minute song anyway.

Unfortunately though, they've given up on the trilogy. I don't believe they should have given up so fast, but realistically Dookie seems like it's their next project. And if they're going to play Dookie live, then there is nothing misleading about re-releasing Dookie. Nowadays it seems like being a band automatically puts you outside of the mainstream. You have to be an over-the-top, auto-tuned, pop musician backed with recycled beats and crappy dance music in order to be on top 40 radio.

Plus it's heavier than anything Green Day have ever recorded
Spike Posted September 2, 2013 Posted September 2, 2013 I'd say bands are alive and well, Biffy are doing really well, and the new Avenged Sevenfold album is currently number 1 in the UK. Who could have seen that coming? Obviously rock bands have nothing on the likes of One Direction currently, but it's a different market altogether. I don't know if the two can be compared, the whole principle is different.

Nice to see a band finally hitting it big, even if the new album is a bit shite I was also delighted to see that Biffy were by far and away the fan favourites at Reading/Leeds, they faced some huge competition.
Guest Posted September 2, 2013 Posted September 2, 2013 I dunno what it is with you Americans and your godawful music tastes Then again, this was a legit single in Ireland, so I guess we can't say anything http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EsVb0gkQq84
JOE THE X-KID Posted September 2, 2013 Posted September 2, 2013 It's just a shame Biffy have had to water down their music to become successful
Guest Posted September 2, 2013 Posted September 2, 2013 It's just a shame Biffy have had to water down their music to become successful They got a song with hardcore breakdown into the Top 20, I'm more than happy with that Anyway, lets save it for the Biffy thread
WhiteTim Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 the general public dont have the patience for a 6 minute song anyway. Sadly this is the truth nowadays Back in the days radio would play long songs and were hits Ray Charles "What I'd Say" is over 7 mins and was his first #1 American Pie radio edit is 6 and 1/2 mins But now if song over 3 min it seems its overkill
belinda jane Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 Sadly this is the truth nowadays Back in the days radio would play long songs and were hits Ray Charles "What I'd Say" is over 7 mins and was his first #1 American Pie radio edit is 6 and 1/2 mins But now if song over 3 min it seems its overkill over here on our radio, they even cut down 21 Guns to make it shorter. yes, that's right. 21 Guns.
WhiteTim Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 over here on our radio, they even cut down 21 Guns to make it shorter. yes, that's right. 21 Guns. Wow
Guest Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 Hardly surprising, even Smells Like Teen Spirit had a radio edit. Which made it about 5 seconds shorter, I might add.
Spike Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 Radio edits have always been a joke. I don't know if you're familiar with Motorcycle Emptiness by the Manics, but that had a radio edit that was absolutely laughable. It's 6:09 long originally, and ends with a guitar solo that's about a minute long. They cut most of that out, which I can kind of understand (although totally object to), but they also removed two lines from the last verse. Originally it was "Drive away and it's the same / Everywhere death row, everyone's a victim / These joys are counterfeit / This happiness corrupt political shit." The radio edit changed it to "Drive away and it's the same / This happiness corrupt political shit." So not only does it then not make sense, they cut two innocent lines and left in the one with the swearing! They didn't even edit "shit" out. Laughable. Back to Green Day, who else has heard the American Idiot radio edit that cuts the solo out?! It's only 2:54 to start with!
Z J Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 Peaked at No. 14 in the UK charts, the album went straight to No. 1. Plus it's heavier than anything Green Day have ever recorded I have no idea what this has to do with my post. Uno! went straight to number 2 here in america, a far more difficult feat considering the lack of interest in rock music on this side of the atlantic. That's nice it's "heavier"....does that mean better? Biffy Clyro has nothing to do with what I'm talking about as they are not mainstream in America, which whether you like it or not does matter.
