Unpopular Green Day Opinions

Oh Love is potentially one of the best songs Green Day has ever written. I think it should have been the opening track for ¡Tré!, but it was still a kickass first single and an amazing song.

Hmm...opening track of Tre. Hadn't thought of that, but that would work well.

I agree tbh, Dookie is a great album and all and it was a great surprise when they played it all the way through for the first time this year but I think the one time may have been enough. It's becoming kind of predictable now.

They played it three times? I wouldn't call it very predictable. I think it's a great treat and I hope it encourages them to play obscurer songs and revisit old albums.

Aah yeah, I remember. What can I say, I love Frusciante :P

Haha, sorry about that! Here it is: http://tomjohnstonemusic.blogspot.com/

When sending a link to a single blog post, don't send a link to the entire blog, just in case you write more. That's why these links are called permalinks. Permalink to your currently only post would be http://tomjohnstonemusic.blogspot.com/2012/01/green-day-21st-century-breakdown.html

And YOU BETTER DO. :D

I'm just gonna say it. Dookie all the way through isn't working. Despite how famous it is, the majority of people don't know anything except the singles and maybe Burnout. Honestly, what more do you need from the album? The only song from it besides the singles and Burnout that I ever listen to is Havin' a Blast. It just brings the show to a halt in my opinion.

I don't know, I guess it's just that I'm not a big fan of Dookie, or maybe I'm just getting bored with the band, but I just don't like this.

I honestly can't disagree more with you. As someone who was there for a playthrough, it was a highlight of the show, not something that slowed it down or ruined it in any way. When I looked around me at Brixton, there wasn't a single person who wasn't singing along to songs like Having a Blast, Pulling Teeth, or Sassafras Roots. It was a truly amazing experience seeing how one album has touched so many people, and I hope they continue doing it.

They should play a random album through like Nimrod or Warning!

yes but there's no reason to. they play dookie because of the anniversary

And it'd take a LOT of rehearsal lol. With Dookie the songs are all relatively simple and they already play half of them regularly anyway, and that still needed a load of rehearsing. Nimrod or Warning would require rehearsing way more unfamiliar and more complicated songs, plus extra instruments for many of them. Not to mention Dookie is far more guaranteed to get the crowd going. Don't get me wrong I'd love to hear them do more albums in full, but it's a pretty big ask. They've already invested lots of effort into getting Dookie down right and they've only done it at a few shows, let them make the most of that first!

I think I don't want a FULL Dookie tour. I mean, only Dookie songs or stuff.

It'll never be that, the album Dookie is less than 40 minutes long and Green Day shows are over 2 hours long. It's an awesome part of the setlist when they do it but the whole show isn't just about Dookie, there's plenty of time for other stuff too.

I don't know if this has been said or how unpopular this is but I like the way Billie's voice sounds on 1039 and Kerplunk better than how it sounds on the trilogy.

I feel the two are uncomparable

I've one seen a couple songs from Reading and it seems like Billie has a tired or strained voice. Luckily it feel like with some real time off to rest it and some training to bring it back up to great standards he should be alright

I do enjoy Dookie, but I will also readily admit that a lot of it sounds similar to me and I have difficulty telling songs apart sometimes, so I don't know if I'd be the most appreciative of it live. It's not that I wouldn't enjoy a show where they do it, I totally would. It would just be like at my show where they played Disappearing Boy and Only of You, two songs that I remember nothing about ... my friend is freaking out because they're playing them, and I can't forge any connection with the songs. It would be slightly wasted on me. Whether it's "working" or not, I don't know. I think it's just something that appeals really strongly to a lot of people who forged a big connection with the album, and it could be off-putting to others.

I understand this is probably the majority, nor the minority and don't take this personally but anyone going to the shows should know 98% of the songs in full

It's such a shame they don't play 21st Century Breakdown anymore it's my favourite Green Day song, and I hope their next record will be more similar to 21st Century Breakdown (album) rather then their 90's albums and continue to develop/mature their sound and become more of a rock band rather than pop/punk band.

that would have been an excellent bookend of the album with Brutal love!

I still hope for 21st century breakdown as opening

though I agree with the 'Dookie aint all that' posts, the album live was something special at Brixton (and Dookie as an album is probably my least fave, even though half the songs are amongst my faves  )

yes and YES!!

Warning FTW!! :)

same here.

With all the folks who don't like Dookie, I can't help but think that the media taught us to be more demanding in some weird, out-there way.

Yup, I always blame it on the media. Fuck the media.

Lol while I dont worship Dookie or have it in my top 5 GD albums it is the album that got me into them in Summer 94 but I've heard it to much I have no real desire to ever listen to it again

I mean, I do agree that fans who act like a setlist is shitty because they don't know the songs are annoying, but with such an established band like Green Day, it's a bit ridiculous to assume everyone knows every lyric of every song. It's just that Dookie doesn't necessarily mean as much to some people as it does to others, and that is gonna create some differences. I love the band so fucking much even though I don't know every word to every song.

Re: Dookie

1. How can something they had done a grand total 4 or 5 times be considered predictable? Just because everyone knew it would happen at Reading doesn't mean the whole thing is played out.

2. It seems as if they are playing it in full to re-introduce fans to these now 20 year old songs. If they plan to re-master and re-release the album next year, then it makes sense to drum up excitement. It's almost as if they're releasing it like it was a brand new album. Idk how much mileage they are going to try and get out of Dookie next year, but I wouldn't be surprised if they do a somewhat extensive ad campaign. They may try to get some of the singles on to Top 40 radio (that would be a monumental feat, considering they haven't been on top 40 since 21 guns). Perhaps they do the late night TV tour. Basically, they may try to do everything with re-mastered dookie that they wanted to do with the trilogy but couldn't b/c of rehab.

3. With the relatively new 37 songs they just released you would think it would be too soon to move on to Dookie, but this summer was really their last chance to really get the trilogy on the map and they chose not to. They took their time off leaking dookie recordings and then used the Reading festival to showcase dookie in full. So I think they have moved on from the trilogy. This applies to the live shows too. Some speculation of a second US tour is pretty much been squashed now. Australia in February is their next scheduled performance I believe. So we probably won't see them on the road again until next year and it will likely be the re-mastered Dookie tour

4. I know people don't like the idea of a dookie tour but it makes sense to me for a few reasons. First being that there are SO many people who have never gotten a chance to hear Dookie and it's 20 years old. So there is a market for it. You can say they're living in the past but this move could be best for their future. A new Dookie gives them a legit shot at breaking in to the mainstream again. They want to introduce the songs to a new generation of people.

In summary, I don't think this Dookie thing is for people who already like GD, I think it's a move to gain a new generation of fans and I think it could be a damn smart one of they execute it right. Would I like new material instead? Sure I would. But I get it. This makes sense for the long term popularity of the band. Can you imagine When I Come Around and Basket Case topping the iTunes charts next summer? There hasn't been a really commercially successful rock movement on the music charts in a while. Would be awesome if Green Day could lead the charge like they did in 94 and 2004

this.

it made me feel SO awesome in 04/05 that my favourite band were the biggest band in the world.

I so hope that's a joke. Every single person has the right to give any band a try.
