SmoothedOut Posted August 12, 2013 Posted August 12, 2013 I don't think they're aiming for a different direction. They're aiming to entertain people and give them a night to remember. It'd be pretty boring to just see people sing and not get into the show aspect. For example, I used to be a really big Muse fan. I do still like them and I have seen them twice but I think their stage presence is nothing compared to what Green Day has. It isn't like he's randomly screaming numbers out or anything. It's always to the beat of the song and he never cuts into the middle of lyrics. He may not say the end of a line or something but like someone above said it's probably to keep everyone on track. It has nothing to do with not caring about lyrics. If they didn't care about a song anymore they'd probably just not play it, like how (again, for example) Muse hasn't played any of their brilliant songs all the time anymore. I personally love the audience interaction. And also, I wouldn't pay money to go to a concert and just stand or sit. I pay money to have a fucking great time so you bet your ass I'm going to be jumping around. It's not like the crowd rallying affects their songs in any way. In my eyes, if they can rally up a crowd AND play well, that's pretty amazing. The only point I see that's somewhat valid in this argument is maybe it'd be a bit of a downer if he said some numbers instead of your favourite lyrics of a song, but it's a show and at a show you go there to see a band you like, listen to music you like, AND have a good time. Entertainment is a huge factor and if you just want to listen to straight lyrics, that's why they have the song on an album. You pay money to be entertained by the music AND performance, ultimately. I'm not trying to bash your opinion or anything. I mean, I don't agree with it but I just want you to know how some other people see it. Thank you for understanding at least that one point of my argument. As I've said before, I'm not AGAINST entertainment or having a good time. I think of a Green Day show as THE ideal rock show. My concern is when Green Day decides to incorporate their live elements into their actual records. Where is this all going to escalate? I think Green day is very much attached to their live sound as they've incorporated elements of it into their trilogy. For example, I think I would've preferred a recording of "Stay the Night" without the 'eeeyyooo' in the bridge as it just isn't relevant to the song it's supposed to be. And no, I'm not totally against all that in their songs either. It's more of the way Billie just decided to add it because 'it works' during live shows. I feel that the "hey ho's" and 1, 2, 3's should remain in their live performances but not in the original songs. How did you rate Uno Dos and Tre? I believe they attempted to incorporate too much of their live sound into those records and so I fear for their later releases. How will they sound like? Are they going to continue incorporating their live sound into records to the point where the lyrics no longer make sense and no longer have to? I see this is the direction they have already taken with the trilogy. Some of the low points of this direction are evident in the trilogy. Most if not all fans have had concerns about some of the songs on there and I'm sure many share the same concern that some of the songs just make you go "???".
musso_kn Posted August 12, 2013 Posted August 12, 2013 I wish for the love of God that they'd organize a proper world tour (America, Europe and otherwise) and let us know a few months in advance. It's not like I can get down to Brixton on the 21st so easily, fuck's sake.

Yeh, I'm lucky I can because of living in London, my work timetable being sorted out weekly and an overdraft but it's not great for fans from further away. I know they really like playing London which I guess is why they're doing it... as well as that it probably doesn't add much of a trek from London to Reading/Leeds.
munns6691 Posted August 12, 2013 Posted August 12, 2013 Same here! Dammit, Green Day I need to save and organize for heaven's sake. I live in Mass and honestly there was maybe 2 shows i could have even realistically gotten to and Mass is a big state in America

Everything else has been masterful. His stage presence and crowd interaction are strong as ever. And the reviews from the trilogy tour have been very positive, especially compared to the lack of enthusiasm for the actual albums.
munns6691 Posted August 12, 2013 Posted August 12, 2013 The one in Connecticut and the one in R.I., right? I just want a proper world tour announcement, is that too much to ask? *bitch, whine, moan* Yes and Connecticut is not close
Valeria E. O. Posted August 13, 2013 Posted August 13, 2013 The only songs I like from "Insomniac" are Brat, Greek Stink Breath, Brain Stew and Walking Contradiction. I'm sorry, ok? but the rest of the songs in the album simply don't entretain me. Also, The song I enjoy the least on "American Idiot" is the song American Idiot. I feel like it doesn't fit the story in the album.

Guest Posted August 13, 2013 Posted August 13, 2013 I kind of understand what you're saying about Insomniac. It seems to me like the tracks not released as singles are kind of dull and generic. Bab's Uvula Who?, Armatage Shanks, and Westbound Sign are dull and generic? Are you joking?
WhiteTim Posted August 13, 2013 Posted August 13, 2013 I still don't understand why anyone likes "Brain Stew," it is honestly such a shit song in my opinion. Do you mind telling me why you like it? I don't think I've ever heard someone properly explain I prefer the song live over the studio Studio version is kinda boring I like the lyrics cause when i go days without sleep i can relate to em
UNICORN VOMIT Posted August 13, 2013 Posted August 13, 2013 When I am exhausted - its the first thing that comes to mind is - my eyes feel like then gonna bleed. I love Insomniac - that must be an unpopular opinion.

fromdecimateddreams Posted August 13, 2013 Posted August 13, 2013 I don't really get the hype over Insomniac either. It's probably my least favourite album apart from Walking Contradiction, although I actually really enjoy the live versions of Brain Stew, Geek Stink Breath, etc.
Guest Posted August 13, 2013 Posted August 13, 2013 BUW is just and definitely not generic. Easily in my top 10 GD songs. Such a headbopper, and perfect for when you're feeling frustrated.
UNICORN VOMIT Posted August 13, 2013 Posted August 13, 2013 Loving a Green Day album on a Green Day fanforum isn't really an unpopular opinion Ha ha in the context of the topic I guess it was. How about this one your sarcasm is an unpopular opinion (with me)
munns6691 Posted August 13, 2013 Posted August 13, 2013 The only reason I mentioned it is because I met a couple of awesome people who drove down from Boston for it, so I knew it was doable Anything is doable my friend, just not cost effective haha. Glad you enjoyed it!
Asa. Posted August 13, 2013 Posted August 13, 2013 Bab's Uvula Who?, Armatage Shanks, and Westbound Sign are dull and generic? Are you joking? BUW?, and Armatage Shanks are fine, but Westbound Sign, 86, and Tight Wad Hill just don't stick out to me.
UNICORN VOMIT Posted August 13, 2013 Posted August 13, 2013 The one in Connecticut and the one in R.I., right? I just want a proper world tour announcement, is that too much to ask? *bitch, whine, moan* This
Guest Posted August 13, 2013 Posted August 13, 2013 BUW?, and Armatage Shanks are fine, but Westbound Sign, 86, and Tight Wad Hill just don't stick out to me. Tight Wad Hill is one of the worst songs Green Day ever wrote. But WS and 86 are fuckin' tunes. Plus that bass fill on 86 is worth the price of Insomniac by itself.

Valeria E. O. Posted August 13, 2013 Posted August 13, 2013 I still don't understand why anyone likes "Brain Stew," it is honestly such a shit song in my opinion. Do you mind telling me why you like it? I don't think I've ever heard someone properly explain I'm not completely sure, but I think it's because the sound is just so crude and exhausted, and I say that as a good thing because it matches perfectly the idea of the song. Also it has this vibe that's sad but at the same time brings a smile to my face. It's simple, yet it sounds loaded with emotions. To be honest I can't explain it in an understandable way, it's a sing-along and a headbanger.
Z J Posted August 13, 2013 Posted August 13, 2013 I really like Insomniac. Was the first "old green day" (pre-AI) I'd listened to thoroughly. Right away Armatage Shanks stuck out. The album is wall to wall fast with some sneaky good lyrics. Easy to listen to in one sitting. Watching GD sing those songs live during the years when it was released is really powerful. Knowing now how much of the success of Dookie was a burden to them, how angry those lyrics are. "86" live on Letterman was a fiery performance. Same with Walking Contradiction. I still don't understand why anyone likes "Brain Stew," it is honestly such a shit song in my opinion. Do you mind telling me why you like it? I don't think I've ever heard someone properly explain I like it a lot better live. The lyrics are pretty good. I like the pacing of the song, it's unique. And BJA's voice on Brain Stew on BIAB was wonderful.
Jollyroger118 Posted August 13, 2013 Posted August 13, 2013 I think the trilogy has the best solos of any Green Day work. They remind me of 1039. And I think wild one is my favorite of them all but I'm not sure
bagelfeet Posted August 13, 2013 Posted August 13, 2013 Insomniac is my favorite album I love every song on it, but Armatage Shanks and Brat are my favorite GD songs from their discography...I guess that might be an unpopular opinion
