Guest Posted August 8, 2013 Posted August 8, 2013 smh u thief. I can't. It still makes the album sound sloppy and shitty though, regardless of the excuse. So what? Never Mind The Bollocks... is a fucking disaster of an album, half of them could barely play their instruments, and Rotten couldn't sing. It's considered a classic by anyone with half a brain. Quality means nothing.
Hermione Posted August 8, 2013 Posted August 8, 2013 You snooze you lose Also, show me a punk drummer aged 15/16 who isn't sloppy as fuck. John's three years older than Billie and Mike so that's no excuse . But I have no problem with the drumming on that album anyway.
Guest Posted August 8, 2013 Posted August 8, 2013 When you're comparing the QUALITY of two albums (irregardless of their significance and the esteem they're held in by the fans), yes, quality does mean something. are we really gonna have our first fight over this jfc I need a drink. It's really not fair to compare something they recorded for a couple of hundred bucks in their teens with an album they spent a couple of thousand on a few years later. Yes it might sounds rubbish compared to Kerplunk, but they were just kids knocking out some songs they wrote, it wasn't meant to change the world. Also did you just fucking say "irregardless" because I think that means I win by default. John's three years older than Billie and Mike so that's no excuse . But I have no problem with the drumming on that album anyway. Should have known that, bad Green Day fan John is still quite good compared to a lot of drummers out there today, such as Nick Hodgson from the Kaiser Chiefs and Taylor Hawkins from Foo Fighters who still have issues consistently playing in time.
Guest Posted August 8, 2013 Posted August 8, 2013 It's an American dialectal thing okay get over it. It's not a dialectal thing you fucked up and now you're covering your ass go back to school because GRAMMAR BITCH The grammar in that sentence was ironically terrible. Deal with it.
Guest Posted August 8, 2013 Posted August 8, 2013 According to Webster, it actually is a dialectal thing so Anyway, I'm not the person who started comparing 39/Smooth with Kerplunk, I'm just working with what we've got here. I honestly try not to compare them for the reasons you stated above. Well urbandictionary says "Used by people who ignorantly mean to say regardless. According to webster, it is a word, but since the prefix "ir" and the suffx "less" both mean "not or with" they cancel each other out, so what you end up with is regard. When you use this to try to say you don't care about something, you end up saying that you do." and "A word used by uneducated people intending to sound intelligent. Often, the defendant will use this word in court in an attempt to impress the judge and jury. Educated people notice and those who use this word instantly identify themselves to educated people as being uneducated. " SO I'll let you off... THIS TIME
Guest Posted August 8, 2013 Posted August 8, 2013 Yes, because Urban Dictionary is a way more legit source than Merriam Webster, okay m8. It is, I bet the folk at Webster don't even know what "pwn" means. Also no one uses Webster over here, Oxford is the way to go. They were pumping out dictionaries before Merriam and Webster started shagging and popping out mini dictionaries.
Guest Posted August 8, 2013 Posted August 8, 2013 Your argument is invalid. okay it's seriously time to go back to unpopular opinions, did you have anything more to add to the 39/Smooth vs. Kerplunk issue? I JUST GOT PWN3D
Anaïs. Posted August 8, 2013 Posted August 8, 2013 Not sure if this counts, exactly, but I think that Billie Joe selectively channels John Lennon's spirit. In addition to the amazing "Working Class Hero" cover, doesn't "Pulling Teeth" sound exactly like "Mean Mr. Mustard"? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pkn2l9UQP4o

fromdecimateddreams Posted August 8, 2013 Posted August 8, 2013 No way. the drumming on 39/Smooth is all over the place, the album isn't tight, and Billie's lyrics & vocals are questionable on a lot of the songs imho. Also, there's no sense of coherence to the album as a whole. Kerplunk kicks the shit out of it. Of course his lyrics and vocals are a little questionable, he was what, like 17 or 18? I prefer Kerplunk too, but I still think 39/Smooth is awesome. And then I love the entirety of 1039/SOSH.
Cath Posted August 8, 2013 Posted August 8, 2013 i prefer 1039 sosh just because it contains At the Librairy,Going to Pasalacqua & Why do you want him? seriously it got great songs!
Guest Posted August 8, 2013 Posted August 8, 2013 Of course his lyrics and vocals are a little questionable, he was what, like 17 or 18? The first tracks were recorded when they were 16.
fromdecimateddreams Posted August 8, 2013 Posted August 8, 2013 The first tracks were recorded when they were 16. So it makes even more sense that the vocals were a bit iffy, then. Not to mention the quality of the recordings in the first place (I like the raw sound personally, but that's just me).
Hermione Posted August 8, 2013 Posted August 8, 2013 39/Smooth should be the album to judge, not a compilation album that has their earlier EPs tacked on . Judging 39/Smooth by the 1000 Hours and Slappy EP songs is like judging Kerplunk by the Sweet Children EP songs just because they're stuck on the end of it. I think 39/Smooth is a good and coherent album. I like the EPs too but I've always thought of each of them as being separate.
Z J Posted August 8, 2013 Posted August 8, 2013 Dookie and Insomniac > 39/Smooth and Kerplunk. I shouldn't even have to say that
Anaïs. Posted August 9, 2013 Posted August 9, 2013 Dookie and Insomniac > 39/Smooth and Kerplunk. I shouldn't even have to say that I actually blend the two together: my personal preference is Dookie/Kerplunk > Insomniac. And 39/Smooth is at the bottom (musically, anyway—beats the trilogy lyrically).
WhiteTim Posted August 9, 2013 Posted August 9, 2013 39/Smooth is at the bottom (musically, anywaybeats the trilogy lyrically). Thanks for the laughs
Cath Posted August 9, 2013 Posted August 9, 2013 1039 sosh got like the best guitar solos so musically is pretty great
Anaïs. Posted August 9, 2013 Posted August 9, 2013 1039 sosh got like the best guitar solos so musically is pretty greatI'll agree that the solos are pretty great, but solos aren't really something that make or break a song for me, and the low-quality sound bugs me. Just an opinion, and I'm not saying the album is shit or anything. "1000 Hours," anyone? Okay, fair enough. I just prefer lyrics that are bad in a straightforward way to lyrics that attempt to sound poetic and important and are bad.
Z J Posted August 10, 2013 Posted August 10, 2013 As whole 39/Smooth obviously isn't as lyrically sound as the trilogy. But a song like Road To Acceptance strikes me as more honest and relatable than 90% of the trilogy. And considering he's had over 20 years of writing experience in between, it's kind of pointless to compare them. BTW 39/Smooth might the only album that has worse lyrics than the trilogy.

For me it's that sincerity of 39/smooth that makes it a lyrically stronger album than the Trilogy as a whole anyway. And I feel like there are fewer cliches on 39/smooth. iDOS! is a real grower. Or at least certain tracks are. Lady Cobra rocks pretty hard.
Guest Posted August 10, 2013 Posted August 10, 2013 Lady Cobra is one of the worst tracks they've ever recorded, in my opinion. It sounds like a reject from Stop, Drop & Roll. The riff is boring and repetitive, and the lyrics are dumb, like much of Dos.
The Forgotten Posted August 10, 2013 Posted August 10, 2013 I loved DOS pretty much instantly. It stands as one of my favorite Green Day albums, although I'll say I agree that the lyrics throughout the album are dumb
