alright I'll bite.....why?

Cause no one will ever be happy with a new album from a band when comparing it to a past album

Hm well I guess that would depend on the person. I was very happy with 21 CB even though I think AI is far superior. If you go in expecting too much, then maybe you'd be unhappy.

Idk I feel like comparing things is a fairly common exercise.

I don't see how you can't compare an album to a band's previous work. The reason I buy Green Day's records brand new - rather than trying to illegally download them or something - is that I generally expect a high level of quality from them, based on what they released in the past. Of course I'm going to say the Trilogy isn't as good as their other stuff, because it's that stuff that made me love Green Day in the first place. I'm not comparing in the sense that I want all the albums to sound the same in terms of genre, songwriting style etc., only in terms of pure quality. That's it, and everyone does it.

But when people constantly compare new stuff to the old stuff, it's kind of just beating a dead horse. Of course the Trilogy isn't going to sound like Dooke. It's not supposed to, that's the whole point of growing and evolving as a band. Bands change their sound and style as they age, so comparing what music they're making at 40 to what they made at 20 is kind of silly. The new stuff is the new stuff and should be left alone as is. It's a whole new category in itself, which is usually what the band intended to do when they release new, "experimental" things.

But if I say I don't think the Trilogy is as good as their older material, it doesn't mean I expect them to keep writing pop punk songs about masturbation. It has nothing to do with the kind of music their playing, like I said. It's the fact that in my opinion it's not as good quality. even when viewed on its own, it isn't particularly thrilling. They could write classical music for all I care, I'd still adore it if they pulled it off well.

I think they're completely comparable. They're both from the same artist so why not? What you would normally be comparing however are the differences and changes between the albums.

Yes, exactly. That I completely agree with. My comment was aimed more at the people who seem so infatuated with every new thing GD does being "just like their old stuff" and "going back to their roots" and all that crap. That type of comparing is totally ridiculous because they haven't realized that bands change and not everything is going to sound like it did 20 years ago.

I fell in love with Green Day over a YouTube ad, so I loved the trilogy first, before I heard their earlier works. can't say I love dookie or warning that much. and also, I am not complaining about them remaining 'punk' or whatever. my two cents in for the day. wait, make that a nickel, in Canada, there is no such thing as pennies. and that is my 'unpopular green day opinion'.

I can relate because the first song I heard in full was Kill The DJ which is my second favorite Green Day song. You should listen to Insomniac it's my favorite as of recently

OK can I just say how happy this makes me. Like, I didn't think Green Day could have gained any "new" fans from the trilogy, what with it not being very commercially powerful at all (at least compared to the WAVES of new fans they got from American Idiot, and somewhat from 21CB). So to hear that both of you first fell in love with Green Day from a song you heard off Uno warms my heart and gives me hope in humanity and the future of this band in general!

For the record: I also didn't expect the trilogy to be like their old stuff, nor did I care if it was. I just like all their other stuff better.

For an unpopular opinion (disclaimer: possibly popular): If I'm introducing someone to Green Day, or trying to get someone in to GD, the first song I'd show them is When I Come Around. Perfect mix of popularity, catchiness, and it has a broad appeal musically.

To me comparing new albums and old albums are just expecting to new to sound like the old imo...

Like I love the trilogy but if I were to say judge against say Dookie I'd probally be bashing it cause it doesn't sound like Dookie (thank god...) but I don't mind thise who do judge the new with the old

My theory is this is the new album GOOD yes or no just listen to the new with the thought of if i never once heard the band before is this album good?

I agree and disagree. I don't like comparing albums with different sounds/styles/goals. But as an overall rating, I think you can cumulatively say that no matter what the genre or "goal" of the album, you could say "this album is more entertaining to ME".

The whole never hearing the band before thing is also a good idea, but also as fans we expect good music if we've received it before. But comparing the Trilogy to something like 21CB or AI is a bad idea. Two different album styles and goals.

I actually told my friend to listen to the trilogy and now he loves Green Day as much as I do :D

I agree. Why would people want them to always sound the same anyways? I mean it's literally impossible and to be honest Green Day really hasn't ever drastically changed their style that much and the trilogy really sounds like what everybodys wanted since American Idiot. It's not political and has no agendas and sounds like a throwback and a celebration. Like a party ! But the lyrics on the trilogy are crude, they make sense as songs but their just lacking care. I've never felt that way about Billie's writing before but it doesn't really bother me, to me the trilogy is really cool if your a crazy fan like me cause it shows alot about Billie as a person. You can feel that he was going out of control and these songs were like him writing for his life, per se. He wasn't at the top of the world this time, like he was when they released 21st Century and he wasn't trying to be ambitious or speak for a generation, the trilogy songs feel like his diary songs to me lol

I LOVE the part in X-Kid where Mike goes 'Bombs away'.. It's weird how that part makes the song 10x better

I really like suffocate but I feel like its just the typical pop punk stuff you hear these days. The typical 'punk-fluff' the likes of Fall Out Boy sing.

I hate it when pop punk bands sound like pop punk.

but i thought that was green day's genre. that's what i always put them under anyway.

I think what 99-Revolutions (don't know your name, sorry) meant is that it's a very typical type of pop-punk. Green Day's genre can be classified as pop punk, definitely, but every band (or almost every band) within any genre has their own style and spin on said genre, and needless to say, GD has their own specific style to the music they make. Maybe that person just thinks that Suffocate lacks in that "unique spin" of sorts and just sounds like a very typical, run-of-the-mill pop punk song.

Strange I think Suffocate is very Green Day like

I was wrong about 21st Century Breakdown, its a top 3 or 4 Green Day album and it DOES have at least two (should have been) big hits in Viva La Gloria and American Eulogy.

1. Nightlife is a shitty song and I still don't even know who that annoying girl in the song is. I probably don't want to know though.
2. Do Da Da is not long enough.
