Hermione Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 That's alright, but it doesn't make it a legitimate complaint that it's "not what the song is about". Well I agree there. Can see why it could seem annoying in this particular video's case though, even if it isn't really the full reason why it's annoying on its own.
The Grouch is Tracy Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 Tre looks botoxed to the hill, like, super tight face Prime example: To me he just looks puffy and slightly tired......welcome to middle age Tre, get used to it every morning!
Anaïs. Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 I don't like Billie's vocals in AAF. They sound distinctly auto-tuned, and every time I listen to the album it bugs the crap out of me. Listen to "J.A.R." for a particularly bad example. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eca2n-fdit4 EDIT: And oh, God, I'd forgotten, it's even worse here starting at 4:19. http://youtu.be/q2LfulxA8yM
Isabel Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 I might agree if he'd just come up with it on his own, but I do like the randomness of him covering a stupid joke song and the strange lines he added to it off the top of his head . And his moustache. And it's cool when he accidentally reads a line from what would become 21st CB. Really? I just can't stand it at all. Although, did not know about the lyric from 21st CB!?
Z J Posted July 26, 2013 Posted July 26, 2013 I cringe when I hear Billie singing 21 Guns live, he rarely hits the note properly. It's the same with Less Than Jake, they play The Science of Selling Yourself Short at every show but Roger never gets the 'I've been spending my time at the local liquor store' line right. love less than jake. billie never tries for those notes except during the piano chorus at the end. EDIT: And oh, God, I'd forgotten, it's even worse here starting at 4:19. man I usually agree with you but this Idk. You can watch the videos of the performances that they put on the CD. They sound the same, not auto-tuned. Also the live version of JAR>studio
WhiteTim Posted July 26, 2013 Posted July 26, 2013 Not all vocal effects are auto tune... if Billie's vocals arent all robotic t pain/akon like then 99% its not auto tune...
Z J Posted July 26, 2013 Posted July 26, 2013 Not all vocal effects are auto tune... if Billie's vocals arent all robotic t pain/akon like then 99% its not auto tune... there's pitch correction which I believe doesn't make you sound like T-Pain (I think, not sure.) but can that effect be used live? There's reverb, I'm pretty sure that can be used live but it's usually somewhat apparent, no? I'm not a sound expert or anything so I've really no clue what I'm talking about. Either way, the way the song sounds on AAF is how it sounds on the video, and that's all I really know

I'd like to think artists don't use any vocal effects live, but I always assumed I could tell. Songs like Are We Waiting could probably have used a little more reverb on BIAB
Heather. Posted July 26, 2013 Posted July 26, 2013 Some people were talking about disliking Green Day because of fangirls or whatever, and although I think that's a shitty reason to decide your musical taste, I have to say it's kind of valid... Like, just imagine for a second that we're in some alternate universe where One Direction had zero following among teenage girls and was widely respected by adult male rockers and musician-types, well-respected critics whose judgment is trusted. It would change the way you looked at them and their music. I know it's entirely impossible to put yourself in that frame of mind, but seriously, it's all about the hype surrounding something, saying it's "cool" for whatever reason, and then observing what makes it "cool." Green Day has been dubbed "cool," and you can either be bothered by the people asserting that claim, or feel validated by those people. It's the same reason we all feel a greater sense of pride in this band when people like Joe Strummer or Elvis Costello praise Green Day, and why it would hurt us to hear other artists that we admire say they don't respect Green Day's talent. Throw teenage girls into the mix, and I can understand how their opinion, meaningless as it might feel to so many people, might drag you down. Personally I'm not bothered by fangirls (having sort of been one of them at one point or another, mostly for artists other than Green Day, though), but I do understand how their relative "power" can actually impede your ability to appreciate a band. If you're a 50-year-old dude and you hear a Green Day song and you rightfully admire its rock n roll craftsmanship, it would probably make you feel insecure when you realize the key demographic is comprised of 12-year-old girls screaming BILLYJO!!! Thankfully we all recognize that Green Day has a broader appeal, but there will always be a demographic split and a generation gap that holds some folks back from being the proper fans they want to be. It's much easier to be a teenager and revere bands from the 60s and 70s than it is to be a baby boomer and be into bands from the 90s, 00s, and today. People look at you funny, and you'd probably look at yourself funny, and repress a lot of genuine emotions. It's sort of unfair, but I can totally understand the mental trap. And it can apply to people even younger, thinking that you want your fellow fans to be of the same mind frame as you (namely, not fangirls, if you're just a cool young male musician in a band, you dont want your hero band to have a major fangirl following, because it sort of makes you insecure about your hero, doesn't it?)

For the most obvious example, listen to the "today" in "A fire burns today" starting at 4:19 of East Jesus Nowhere. Maybe it's just me, but it sounds painfully computerized.

WhiteTim Posted July 26, 2013 Posted July 26, 2013 Not the DVD, the CD. I embedded the corresponding YouTube links. Well why he would use effects on one show but not another? Makes no sense Ill listen to the cd later as the cd is in my car and im too lazy to walk to my car lol (i dont trust youtube audio)
Isabel Posted July 26, 2013 Posted July 26, 2013 love less than jake. billie never tries for those notes except during the piano chorus at the end. The idea of 'fangirls' or people saying that Green Day is a 'fangirl' band doesn't really bother me. My other favourite band is LTJ and the singer slags Green Day all the time...but I just laugh about it because it doesn't change how I feel about them. It was cool though, about a month ago I saw a guy (probably in his 40s) in Tesco wearing a Green Day t-shirt. I think it's great that you can see people all ages and from all walks of life wearing GD shirts, even if some say that they have a reputation for being a fangirl band or whatever. What baffles me is the outrage that people seem to have over Primark selling those Dookie t-shirts...
Hermione Posted July 26, 2013 Posted July 26, 2013 Really? I just can't stand it at all. Although, did not know about the lyric from 21st CB!? Yeah, he sings "The scars on my....." from the papers in front of him then says "oh wait I'm reading the wrong song" and then carries on singing from the right paper. Totally "The scars on my hands and the means to an end" from 21st CB
belinda jane Posted July 26, 2013 Posted July 26, 2013 Yeah, he sings "The scars on my....." from the papers in front of him then says "oh wait I'm reading the wrong song" and then carries on singing from the right paper. Totally "The scars on my hands and the means to an end" from 21st CB that's my favourite part of the entire song, hahaha.

Totally "The scars on my hands and the means to an end" from 21st CB Fucking hell, I did not know about that!! Although to be fair, I only listened to it once or twice, and it was a good year and a half or two years before 21st CB came out, wasn't it? That's so cool though!!
Slydren Posted July 26, 2013 Posted July 26, 2013 I don't see why people hate the Trilogy so much. Sure, song placement wasn't the best, and there was a bit of filler, but the songs were pretty good.
SeeYouTonight Posted July 26, 2013 Posted July 26, 2013 I fell in love with Green Day over a YouTube ad, so I loved the trilogy first, before I heard their earlier works. can't say I love dookie or warning that much. and also, I am not complaining about them remaining 'punk' or whatever. my two cents in for the day. wait, make that a nickel, in Canada, there is no such thing as pennies. and that is my 'unpopular green day opinion'.
SumDay Posted July 26, 2013 Posted July 26, 2013 Billie's voice is like god fucking an angel. Hearing that voice (doesn't matter what album, what concert, what song or whatever) that voice makes me feel strong and..yeha kinda like safe. That sounds creepy but it's true He has the best singer voice on earth (in my opinion of course) His voice changed of course over the years. You know, smoking these shittie cigarettes taking drugs and drinking alcohol AND normal aging changes your voice. I thought that's common sense but it seems like it's rocket sience or whatever.
Cath Posted July 26, 2013 Posted July 26, 2013 the trilogy grows in me a little bit more every day. i was a little bit disappointed at first but now i realized these albums are full of talents.

I can relate because the first song I heard in full was Kill The DJ which is my second favorite Green Day song. You should listen to Insomniac it's my favorite as of recently
Z J Posted July 26, 2013 Posted July 26, 2013 Yeah the trilogy is "pretty good" overall....but compared to other Green Day works it just doesn't really compare. There are a few gems, but top to bottom it just doesn't compare to their other material. However it's nice to see the trilogy gained Green Day some new fans. Now go listen to the rest of their stuff
