The Disappearing Boy Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 Some live performances of 21 Guns are really great.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P0_x1EwxvBohttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s94RzOg3UkQhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HVaYkdG4k_I WHat is that top one, i've never heard it before? A demo? A live peroformance? Either way it's better than the original.
Guest Trotsky Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 WHat is that top one, i've never heard it before? A demo? A live peroformance? Either way it's better than the original. Yeah it's the best performance of 21 Guns. From what I know it's in the 21 Guns single along with Favorite Son.
Tubbie Head Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 I prefer this version 100000 x better than the album version. Not singing the high notes makes it better in my opinion, specially live, there's more power to it!

The live versions have so much more rawness and emotion in them than the album version does, and I like it a lot more. It gives the song more of a punch and I don't get bored listening to it, which sometimes happens with the studio version.
munns6691 Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 I have to say, every time I've heard Billie sing 21 Guns live, I've been disappointed. I love the way the high notes sound on the record version of the song, but I've never once heard him come remotely close to hitting the high notes during a live performance. Don't sing it on a record if you can't sing it at a show. Really. Singing on record and singing while playing/running around after a long show are too completely different things
John Aquino Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 Yeah and they usually played 21 Guns closer to the end of the setlist so he was most likely tired. It's harder to sing in falsetto when you're tired that is probably why he sings "guns" differently live than in the album. From what I've seen though later in the tour when they replaced the last verse with the piano chorus that he would sing "guns" in falsetto for that and usually on the very last time he says it he used it as well (I only really saw him mess up once and that was in the AMAs I believe). belinda jane Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 i like the way he belts out the word "guns" during the live performance though. it sounds like the version they recorded with the cast of the American Idiot Musical.
Z J Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 yeah he really effed it up at the AMA's and from then on he really only did it at the end (fairly well)
belinda jane Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 yeah he really effed it up at the AMA's and from then on he really only did it at the end (fairly well) he must've seen his performance, haha. actually i wonder if they do that? watch prior performances and see if they can improve? that's an interesting thought.
MaraGreenDay Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 Billie has his bad days but actually is a very good singer, much better than some may think here. Also he has one of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard. THIS!!!
John Aquino Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 Yeah I like it better when he belts out "guns" cause it sounds more powerful and has more emotion. But for the piano chorus the falsetto suits it perfectly in my opinion. Billie is a very good singer in my opinion also and although the notes aren't very hard to hit, his voice is really unique. Like it's melodic and aggressive at the same time I can't really explain it haha. Kinda like how he sings in WMUWSE WebRep Overall rating

It would make sense, kind of like a baseball player watches tape, but idk it seems like something they'd deny doing
bagelfeet Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 Tbh I'm not too fond of Billie's stage antics in 1994 they were a little bit strange and they bother me when I watch them. And that thing before She from Jaded I'm Chicago is downright annoying sorry to say
99-revolutions Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 Tre looks botoxed to the hill, like, super tight face Prime example:

I bet they do with some of them, at least. Any smart musician will listen to their performances afterwards and see what they did well and what they can improve on. GD probably just doesn't admit it.
munns6691 Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 It bothers me that the video for Wake Me Up When September ends has nothing to do with the song at all
bagelfeet Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 It bothers me that the video for Wake Me Up When September ends has nothing to do with the song at all agreed
Isabel Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 I cringe when I hear Billie singing 21 Guns live, he rarely hits the note properly. It's the same with Less Than Jake, they play The Science of Selling Yourself Short at every show but Roger never gets the 'I've been spending my time at the local liquor store' line right.
John Aquino Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 Then to top off the WMUWSE video, It has the cutscene in the beginning that's like a minute long, and another cutscene in the middle of the video wtf. WebRep Overall rating
Isabel Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 I think Chocolate Rain is one of the most stupid things that Tre has ever done and it's not funny at all.
Hermione Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 I hate the Wake Me Up When September Ends because it's cringeworthy and horrible, but I don't mind that it has a different meaning to the song. I think it's cool when a video brings a new interpretation/angle to a song instead of just visually reproducing it line for line. Shame I intensely dislike that particular interpretation though! I think Chocolate Rain is one of the most stupid things that Tre has ever done and it's not funny at all. I might agree if he'd just come up with it on his own, but I do like the randomness of him covering a stupid joke song and the strange lines he added to it off the top of his head . And his moustache. And it's cool when he accidentally reads a line from what would become 21st CB. I also quite like it when Billie occasionally tries his best to hit the high 21 Guns note live and doesn't quite make it. It's only one line so it doesn't spoil the song, and it's sweet

Don't sing it on a record if you can't sing it at a show. Really. I kind of agree and disagree. The time I heard Billie sing 21 Guns live I thought it was pretty damn good. However, I actually prefer the broadway version of the song.It bothers me that the video for Wake Me Up When September ends has nothing to do with the song at all I think it would of been quite difficult to make a video of what the song is actually about
green day is Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 It bothers me that the video for Wake Me Up When September ends has nothing to do with the song at all Protip: Most don't. Minority isn't about a parade, after all, and EJN isn't about their live performances.
Hermione Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 Maybe the annoyance is because in WMUWSE's case the video actually makes people think the song is about what the video is about when it isn't. It is kind of annoying that some people think the song was written about 9/11 because of the video and "September" in the title I guess, it helped further the misconception that American Idiot was a purely political album. I don't mind new interpretations of songs in videos but when they have that effect (and are as cheesy/cringy as that to boot) I'm not a fan of them.

That's alright, but it doesn't make it a legitimate complaint that it's "not what the song is about".
