jon18 Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 this. every time i have seen them he sounds different. it's like i've never heard him sing live? that sounds SO ridiculous. but that's the only way i can think of to describe it. Yes, his voice sounds like he's on helium but on videos, he sounds perfectly fine.
Hermione Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 Unpopular opinion: I think Billie is singing just fine now. I find it weird when I see people saying his voice isn't as strong as it used to be or something like that... I can't hear much of a difference. Agreed! I guess some people have noticed some kind of difference but I suspect some of it is just because people are looking for differences now that he's out of rehab and thinking they're finding them when they're not really there. I think his voice is as strong as ever. Why are you guys hate John?! Everyone argumented it like:"Whoa! He was such asshole!!" Actually, John is reason why boys were let to play at Gilman, because they "weren't heavy enough". Tre often acts like jerk, but I haven't from anyone that he's total asshole."Well, his drumming style sucks so bad." I'm guessing it sucks for y'all because John isn't trying to play hard as he can like most punk drummers do. "He hates Green Day now." Nooo, I read an interview or concert review and learned that they're still good friends."He betrayed Green Day for college." If you didn't knew if your band would be mega successful, your band members were younger than you and they like to write love songs, which is reason that you're often laughed at and beaten up. A-a-a-and you've finally got a chance to go to college, I think you're left the band.I think it's silly when people hate him too, but to be fair they're only going off what Billie's said. The few times Billie's talked about John in interviews he's done nothing but slag him off, complain about things he did when he was in the band, and call him a "trust fund punk" etc, I think the last time was about 10 years ago and he still had nothing but negative things to say about him. They're not good friends now, Aaron Cometbus (who's friends with both John and Green Day) talked about it in his account of going on tour with Green Day a couple of years ago. They haven't spoken for years and apparently when John heard that Aaron was going on tour with them he said "You're still hanging around with those guys?". It seems he isn't interested in Green Day and hasn't wanted anything to do with them since he left the band. It's silly to hate someone who you don't really know anything about just because you think Green Day doesn't like him or he doesn't like Green Day, and even sillier to hate on his drumming for that reason. Especially as it seems more like he's just moved on from them than he "hates" them. But it's not all sweetness and light between him and the band.
IlariaIDIOT Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 Billie is a fantastic live singer, but if you think he's never had a poor performance you're kidding yourself. Sure! And with all these tour dates he might be tired even with his voice. Billie's voice is one of the thing I love the most about GD
Tubbie Head Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 I'm not entirely sure why "Going to Pasalacqua" is so beloved. It's not *bad*, but there are better songs on 39/Smooth ("At the Library", for example). I wish that, when they play old stuff, they'd play "80" or "Green Day" or "Android" more instead of "Pasalacqua". DUDE! I totally agree with you. Every single word! i just think a lot of people are biased to be honest, and don't even ever want to think that the lead singer of their favourite band has never had a crap performance. The only crappy performance I've seen of Billie ever was the iHeart festival. Anything else was great for me. Maybe my problem is that I'm not too critical when it comes to musical acts. But the truth is I've seen/heard many singers that do it much much worse than Billie! And as I've said previously, I think Billie is one of the best singers live (when compared to the albums) and I just love his voice to pieces!

I'd also add that people have different criteria for what makes a voice "good" or "crappy". One of the most enjoyable times I saw him singing he was out of key and falling over, but because he was enjoying himself and putting everything he had into the performance it was great . He's not a classical singer on stage at the Albert Hall, technical perfection isn't the only quality to judge his voice on. It's the overall sound and passion he puts into the performance that makes it enjoyable for me, and a bit of rawness or missed notes can work with that.

Guest Trotsky Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 As regards Billie's voice let's not forget his appearances in the Broadway. He was really great back there.
Guest Trotsky Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 Billie has his bad days but actually is a very good singer, much better than some may think here. Also he has one of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard.
fromdecimateddreams Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 I think we also have to remember that Billie's also gotten a lot older and he's been going on tour and singing night after night for over twenty years. If people expect his voice to sound amazing after all of that strain that's been put on it, then they're kind of out of their mind. Of course he's going to miss a few notes and of course he's not going to sound the same at every concert, that's just human and it's also a part of getting older. It happens, and we can't blame him for that. But for me personally, I'm not bothered by that. Every show I've been to has been phenomenal, and maybe I think that because I didn't spend the whole time critiquing what notes he hit and what ones he missed. I don't go to critique them, I go to enjoy them.
Cath Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 Billie's voice has been at his best during the AI era though. but it sure improved after the rehab.
Guest Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 Billie's voice has been at his best during the AI era though. but it sure improved after the rehab. It wasn't good during BIAB, that's for sure. AAF was far superior for vocals.
Cath Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 It wasn't good during BIAB, that's for sure. AAF was far superior for vocals. i agree the vocals were better on AFF, but in general i find his voice better on the ai tour but ai and 21stCB tour are far better than the trilogy tour.
John Aquino Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 I like Homecoming better than JOS does that count as unpopular lol WebRep Overall rating

Eva Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 i just think a lot of people are biased to be honest, and don't even ever want to think that the lead singer of their favourite band has never had a crap performance. one of the worse ones i've ever heard was when they sang '21 Guns' (i think) at the american music awards or something? that was shocking, and i actually posted a status about it on facebook and got absolutely SLAMMED. people were like "AND YOU SAY YOU'RE A GREEN DAY FAN". ..seriously. I have to say, every time I've heard Billie sing 21 Guns live, I've been disappointed. I love the way the high notes sound on the record version of the song, but I've never once heard him come remotely close to hitting the high notes during a live performance. Don't sing it on a record if you can't sing it at a show. Really.
musso_kn Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 I don't know if this is an unpopular opinion at all, but Billie Joe's vocal abilities hit their peak on American Idiot. His voice was crystal clear but had a real sense of aggression. He sounds fine on 21st Century Breakdown, of course, but there's no impact when he sings. His voice had a real charm to it previously, what with the nasally tone and everything, but he was far from a 'good singer', although he sounded fine against the music.

musso_kn Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 not live. 21CB tour was really excellent vocally Well, yeah. There would have been less production on his voice live.
Z J Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 It wasn't good during BIAB, that's for sure. AAF was far superior for vocals. BIAB had some good ones. He sang pretty well on Brain Stew, WMUWSE, and Longview. JOS was really really bad. Good Riddance was ok. Well, yeah. There would have been less production on his voice live. yeah there was quite a bit of production on his voice on 21cb. He backed most of them up pretty well, surprisingly.
Isabel Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 Maybe this isn't an unpopular opinion at all, but I think the broadway cast version of Favourite Son is way better than Green Day's own version. Also, I am devastated that they took Jaded out of the setlist on the recent tour and kept Brain Stew in. Fuck that shit, Jaded is ten times better live than Brain Stew.

Z J Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 She was talking about live not on the actual album i believe ah well fuck me then There's a lot in studio for sure, but he sings the songs well live (During the tour anyway). What kind of "production" are we talking about live
